Book excerpt: This thesis report focuses on wireless communication systems with multiple transmit and multiple receive antennas. At first, we study the performance of such systems assuming a spatial multiplexing scheme at the transmitter and an ML detection at the receiver. We derive an accurate approximation for the conditional error probability on a quasi static channel. This approximation is computed when distinct modulations are applied on the transmit antennas and for any MIMO channel configuration.Then, we outline some adaptive techniques for MIMO systems: adaptive modulation and antenna selection. The first one adjusts the modulations on transmit antennas according to the channel conditions in order to maximize the spectral efficiency while satisfying a constraint on error probability. The second technique selects the set of active antennas to optimize the chosen selection criterion (e.g. maximize the capacity, etc) providing a channel estimation. Both adaptive techniques need a relevant matric to evaluate the MIMO system performance. We propose a new adaptive modulation scheme and antenna selection algorithm where the derived error probability approximation is used as a selection metric. Finally, we consider the quantization of MIMO channels. This quantization, in our terminology classification, allows the partitioning of MIMO channels set into different classes, where each class is identified by a representative. This method could be used for adaptive techniques to find the best adjustable parameters. We describe our MIMO classification algorithm and we illustrate its application for closed-loop MIMO systems, e.g beamforming.

Over the last three hundred years or so we have seen the formalization of science and this of course has touched intertidal ecology. Linnaeus classified specimens collected from the seashore and many common species (Patella vulgata L. , Mytilus edulis L. , Littorina littorea (L. )) bear his imprint because he formally described, named and catalogued them. Early natural historians described zonation patterns in the first part of the 19th century (Audouin and Milne-Edwards, 1832), and the Victorians became avid admirers and collectors of shore animals and plants with the advent of the new fashion of seaside holidays (Gosse, 1856; Kingsley, 1856). As science became professionalized towards the end of the century, marine biologists took advantage of low tides to gain easy access to marine life for taxonomic work and classical studies of functional morphology. Book excerpt: Already as a young boy, I used to walk with my late father, an ardent naturalist at heart, though to his regret not by profession, in the fields and woods on Mt. Carmel where we lived. My father, being largely an amateur ornithologist but also loving other vertebrates, was less inter ested in the little creatures(-the invertebrates) so abundant under stones. These were, more often then not, isopods which are particularly abundant in the Mediterranean region of northern Israel, and therefore not difficult to encounter (Fig. 1). Thus, my interest in the terrestrial isopods started at an early stage. Many years later, after graduating from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, I worked as an assistant to my late friend and colleague, Professor Michael Costa, at the Teachers Seminary in Oranim. One day I found on my desk a copy of Edney's (1954) paper: Woodlice and the land habitat, which my friend left for me knowing of my interest in this group. Therefore, due to the stimulus of Edney's paper, and the many interesting questions it raised in my mind, I developed a lifelong interest in this amazing crustacean group. My research in the ecophysiology of this group followed to a large extent the directions formulated by Edney and Cloudsley-Thompson whose name will be mentioned throughout this book.
