Book Synopsis Characterizing the Future Defense Workforce by : Dina G. Levy
Download or read book Characterizing the Future Defense Workforce written by Dina G. Levy and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2001 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early 1990s, the Department of Defense (DoD) began to change its focus from the Cold War to pursue more diverse missions. Questions arose about how future changes in military missions, organizations, and technology would affect the nature of military work and the characteristics of the military and civilian members of the DoD workforce. To address these questions, RAND undertook an occupational-level analysis of the effects of the future environment on the characteristics of DoD work and workers.
Book Synopsis 100 Years of Radar by : Gaspare Galati
Download or read book 100 Years of Radar written by Gaspare Galati and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers fascinating insights into the key technical and scientific developments in the history of radar, from the first patent, taken out by Hülsmeyer in 1904, through to the present day. Landmark events are highlighted and fascinating insights provided into the exceptional people who made possible the progress in the field, including the scientists and technologists who worked independently and under strict secrecy in various countries across the world in the 1930s and the big businessmen who played an important role after World War II. The book encourages multiple levels of reading. The author is a leading radar researcher who is ideally placed to offer a technical/scientific perspective as well as a historical one. He has taken care to structure and write the book in such a way as to appeal to both non-specialists and experts. The book is not sponsored by any company or body, either formally or informally, and is therefore entirely unbiased. The text is enriched by approximately three hundred images, most of which are original and have been accessed by detailed searches in the archives.
Book Synopsis The Apollo Guidance Computer by : Frank O'Brien
Download or read book The Apollo Guidance Computer written by Frank O'Brien and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-25 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technological marvel that facilitated the Apollo missions to the Moon was the on-board computer. In the 1960s most computers filled an entire room, but the spacecraft’s computer was required to be compact and low power. Although people today find it difficult to accept that it was possible to control a spacecraft using such a ‘primitive’ computer, it nevertheless had capabilities that are advanced even by today’s standards. This is the first book to fully describe the Apollo guidance computer’s architecture, instruction format and programs used by the astronauts. As a comprehensive account, it will span the disciplines of computer science, electrical and aerospace engineering. However, it will also be accessible to the ‘space enthusiast’. In short, the intention is for this to be the definitive account of the Apollo guidance computer. Frank O’Brien’s interest in the Apollo program began as a serious amateur historian. About 12 years ago, he began performing research and writing essays for the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal, and the Apollo Flight Journal. Much of this work centered on his primary interests, the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) and the Lunar Module. These Journals are generally considered the canonical online reference on the flights to the Moon. He was then asked to assist the curatorial staff in the creation of the Cradle of Aviation Museum, on Long Island, New York, where he helped prepare the Lunar Module simulator, a LM procedure trainer and an Apollo space suit for display. He regularly lectures on the Apollo computer and related topics to diverse groups, from NASA's computer engineering conferences, the IEEE/ACM, computer festivals and university student groups.
Book Synopsis Spaceborne Antennas for Planetary Exploration by : William A. Imbriale
Download or read book Spaceborne Antennas for Planetary Exploration written by William A. Imbriale and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-08-04 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JPL spacecraft antennas-from the first Explorer satellite in 1958 to current R & D Spaceborne Antennas for Planetary Exploration covers the development of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) spacecraft antennas, beginning with the first Explorer satellite in 1958 through current research and development activities aimed at future missions. Readers follow the evolution of all the new designs and technological innovations that were developed to meet the growing demands of deep space exploration. The book focuses on the radio frequency design and performance of antennas, but covers environmental and mechanical considerations as well. There is additionally a thorough treatment of all the analytical and measurement techniques used in design and performance assessment. Each chapter is written by one or more leading experts in the field of antenna technology. The presentation of the history and technology of spaceborne antennas is aided by several features: * Photographs and drawings of JPL spacecraft * Illustrations to help readers visualize concepts and designs * Tables highlighting and comparing the performance of the antennas * Bibliographies at the end of each chapter leading to a variety of primary and secondary source material This book complements Large Antennas of the Deep Space Network (Wiley 2002), which surveys the ground antennas covered in support of spacecraft. Together, these two books completely cover all JPL antenna technology, in keeping with the JPL Deep Space Communications and Navigation Series mission to capture and present the many innovations in deep space telecommunications over the past decades. This book is a fascinating and informative read for all individuals working in or interested in deep space telecommunications.

Book Synopsis Nanoparticle Technology Handbook by : Masuo Hosokawa
Download or read book Nanoparticle Technology Handbook written by Masuo Hosokawa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-10-19 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanoparticle technology, which handles the preparation, processing, application and characterisation of nanoparticles, is a new and revolutionary technology. It becomes the core of nanotechnology as an extension of the conventional Fine Particle / Powder Technology. Nanoparticle technology plays an important role in the implementation of nanotechnology in many engineering and industrial fields including electronic devices, advanced ceramics, new batteries, engineered catalysts, functional paint and ink, Drug Delivery System, biotechnology, etc.; and makes use of the unique properties of the nanoparticles which are completely different from those of the bulk materials. This new handbook is the first to explain complete aspects of nanoparticles with many application examples showing their advantages and advanced development. There are handbooks which briefly mention the nanosized particles or their related applications, but no handbook describing the complete aspects of nanoparticles has been published so far.The handbook elucidates of the basic properties of nanoparticles and various nanostructural materials with their characterisation methods in the first part. It also introduces more than 40 examples of practical and potential uses of nanoparticles in the later part dealing with applications. It is intended to give readers a clear picture of nanoparticles as well as new ideas or hints on their applications to create new materials or to improve the performance of the advanced functional materials developed with the nanoparticles.* Introduces all aspects of nanoparticle technology, from the fundamentals to applications.* Includes basic information on the preparation through to the characterization of nanoparticles from various viewpoints * Includes information on nanostructures, which play an important role in practical applications.
