Book Synopsis Mass Deacidification Systems by : Karen Turko
Download or read book Mass Deacidification Systems written by Karen Turko and published by Association of Research Libr. This book was released on 1990 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Library administrators, faced with the problems of acid-paper deterioration, are examining mass deacidification procedures. Mass deacidification of acidic books while they are still physically sound and not yet brittle is the most cost-effective corrective action to extend the life of the paper. There are currently at least five mass deacidification processes available or under development, so that library administrators can begin to plan for the process. A brief and nontechnical description is given of the following five techniques: (1) DEZ (diethyl zinc), a process at the pilot stage; (2) Wei T'o, a liquified gas process that is in use in at least two locations; (3) BPA, the Book Preservation Associates System, currently available in New Jersey; (4) Bookkeeper, a process under development that involves magnesium oxide; and (5) the Lithco process, in the pilot stage. A table summarizes the properties, selection requirements, cycle times, and development stages of each of these processes. Considerations of process use, such as length of time required to treat a collection, potential damage or strengthening effects, and evaluation issues are reviewed. (Contains 103 references.) (SLD)

Book Synopsis Nanoscience for the Conservation of Works of Art by : Piero Baglioni
Download or read book Nanoscience for the Conservation of Works of Art written by Piero Baglioni and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the chemistry behind works of art and heritage materials presents an opportunity to apply scientific techniques to their conservation and restoration. Manipulation of materials at the nanoscale affords greater accuracy and minimal disturbance to the original work, while efficiently combating the affects of time and environment. This book meets the growing demand for an all-encompassing handbook to instruct on the use of today's science on mankind's cultural heritage. The editors have pioneered modern techniques in art conservation over the last four decades, and have brought together expertise from across the globe. Each chapter presents the theoretical background to the topic in question, followed by practical information on its application and relevant case studies. Introductory chapters present the science behind the physical composition of art materials. Four chapters explore various cleaning techniques now, followed by four chapters describing the application of inorganic nanomaterials. Each chapter is fully referenced to the primary literature and offers suggestions for further reading. Professional conservators and scientists alike will find this essential reading, as will postgraduate students in the fields of materials and colloid science, art restoration and nanoscience.

Download or read book Double Fold written by Nicholson Baker and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2002-08-13 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ostensible purpose of a library is to preserve the printed word. But for fifty years our country’s libraries–including the Library of Congress–have been doing just the opposite, destroying hundreds of thousands of historic newspapers and replacing them with microfilm copies that are difficult to read, lack all the color and quality of the original paper and illustrations, and deteriorate with age. With meticulous detective work and Baker’s well-known explanatory power, Double Fold reveals a secret history of microfilm lobbyists, former CIA agents, and warehouses where priceless archives are destroyed with a machine called a guillotine. Baker argues passionately for preservation, even cashing in his own retirement account to save one important archive–all twenty tons of it. Written the brilliant narrative style that Nicholson Baker fans have come to expect, Double Fold is a persuasive and often devastating book that may turn out to be The Jungle of the American library system.
