Book Synopsis The Three Secular Plays of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz by : Guillermo Schmidhuber

This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695) wrote poetry, prose, and plays and is considered the greatest of Mexican women writers. She was an intellectual prodigy, reportedly mastering Latin in twenty lessons, and at sixteen she entered a convent so that she might continue her learning. One of the most influential early feminists in the New World, she answered a bishop's criticism in a letter that has become a classic defense of the education of women. She collected a private library of 4,000 volumes, but when she was told that her studies were delaying the progress of her spiritual education, she gave away her books and devoted herself to religious studies. Traditionally, scholars have attributed only one complete play to Sor Juana, but in 1989 Guillermo Schmidhuber discovered a lost play, The Second Celestina, which he proved conclusively to be Sor Juana's earliest comedia, co-authored with Agustin Salazar y Torres. Schmidhuber's critical study is the first dedicated exclusively to the secular plays and the first to confirm Sor Juana's authorship of three dramatic pieces. Combining literary history and criticism, Schmidhuber explores the life and originality of Sor Juana's dramas and helps elucidate her enigmatic genius. Though Sor Juana's work as a poet and intellectual has received increasing attention in the last decade, writing about her has rarely taken into account her role as dramatist. Schmidhuber helps correct this critical imbalance by examining Sor Juana's plays in light of dramatic theory. He finds elements of both mannerist and baroque theater in her work, sometimes both within the same play.
Book Synopsis Propriety and Permissiveness in Bourbon Mexico by : Juan Pedro Viqueira Albán
Download or read book Propriety and Permissiveness in Bourbon Mexico written by Juan Pedro Viqueira Albán and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1999 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth century in New Spain witnessed major changes: among these, one of the most significant was the adoption of French customs among the upper groups of society in response to the spreading ideas of the Enlightenment. These new ideas, it has been assumed, brought a relaxation of social customs. But Viqueira Alban takes this assumption, and raises the question: Was it really a period of relaxation of social customs, in this age of growth without development? He discovered that the movement of rural workers and their families to urban centers created a concern within the church and government hierarchy about the threat of disorder, leading to the need for new social restraints. This new text is ideal for colonial Latin American survey courses, courses on the history of Mexico and Latin American literature, and courses on the popular culture and social history of Latin America.

Book Synopsis The Medieval Heritage of Mexico by : Luis Weckmann
Download or read book The Medieval Heritage of Mexico written by Luis Weckmann and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the medieval legacy that influences life in Spanish-speaking North America to the present day. Focusing on the period from 1517?the expedition of Hernandez de Cordoba?to the middle of the seventeenth century, Weckmann describes how explorers, administrators, judges, and clergy introduced to the New World a culture that was essentially medieval. That the transplanted culture differentiated itself from that of Spain is due to the resistance of the indigenous cultures of Mexico.

Download or read book Stagestruck written by Lauren R. Clay and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stagestruck traces the making of a vibrant French theater industry between the reign of Louis XIV and the French Revolution. During this era more than eighty provincial and colonial cities celebrated the inauguration of their first public playhouses. These theaters emerged as the most prominent urban cultural institutions in prerevolutionary France, becoming key sites for the articulation and contestation of social, political, and racial relationships. Combining rich description with nuanced analysis based on extensive archival evidence, Lauren R. Clay illuminates the wide-ranging consequences of theater’s spectacular growth for performers, spectators, and authorities in cities throughout France as well as in the empire’s most important Atlantic colony, Saint-Domingue. Clay argues that outside Paris the expansion of theater came about through local initiative, civic engagement, and entrepreneurial investment, rather than through actions or policies undertaken by the royal government and its agents. Reconstructing the business of theatrical production, she brings to light the efforts of a wide array of investors, entrepreneurs, directors, and actors—including women and people of color—who seized the opportunities offered by commercial theater to become important agents of cultural change. Portraying a vital and increasingly consumer-oriented public sphere beyond the capital, Stagestruck overturns the long-held notion that cultural change flowed from Paris and the royal court to the provinces and colonies. This deeply researched book will appeal to historians of Europe and the Atlantic world, particularly those interested in the social and political impact of the consumer revolution and the forging of national and imperial cultural networks. In addition to theater and literary scholars, it will attract the attention of historians and sociologists who study business, labor history, and the emergence of the modern French state.

Book Synopsis Latin American Popular Theatre by : Judith A. Weiss
Download or read book Latin American Popular Theatre written by Judith A. Weiss and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is little about the evolution of Latin American popular theatre, especially New Popular Theatre, that goes unexplored in this interdisciplinary study. The authors re-examine the history of Latin American theatre to focus on the ruse of the Nuevo Teatro Popular, a radical movement of the mid-1960's that combines dormant forms of Latin America theatre with classical European, pre-Columbian and African theatre, modern experimental theatre, and popular culture. Weiss and her colleagues use detailed social, political, and historical information to show the syncretism and contradictory consciousness that has existed in this form of expression in Latin America since the first encounters between Europeans and indigenous Americans.
