Book Synopsis You Are My Happy Ending by : Emily Garside
Download or read book You Are My Happy Ending written by Emily Garside and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the show's modest beginnings to its massive Emmy sweep, You Are My Happy Ending tells the story of how Schitt’s Creek became the surprise hit that changed the way we think about LGBTQ relationships. Cultural analyst Emily Garside shows how this series fused classic romcom and sitcom tropes to create a world with a queer love story at its core, starting with Daniel Levy, the co-creator who plays David. She examines the show’s Canadian identity and its diverse incorporation of references from literature (Brideshead Revisited) to cinema (Hitchcock’s The Birds), as well as numerous romantic comedy texts. Schitt’s Creek is an homage to all these elements of the past literary and cinematic canon while also creating an important contemporary narrative of its own. Most importantly, Garside delves into the references to queer icons and culture—from Cabaret to drag. How did this supposedly light comedy embrace an activist perspective? And how does it use (and subvert) its romantic-comedy genre in order to make that activism even more powerful? Combining a fan's affection with a scholar's insight, Garside explains how this “little show that could” is the product of a long history of queer activism, breaking down barriers and marking a turning point in future representation of LGBTQ stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family Trust was inspired by a very detailed dream many years ago. It was so vivid; I could not forget it. I went to the library and researched the events which occurred in the world and specifically the Columbus, Ohio area from the mid 1980’s and forward through 1996. Family Trust by Kathern (Gillogly) Ware, although a book of fiction, is based on actual events from the mid-1800's to the last decade of 1990. Elizabeth dies in 1900, at the age of 20, after giving birth to a son. Her heart, weakened by Rheumatic Fever, was unable to stand the strain of childbirth. Her husband, Edward, is a doctor, and is aware of her weak heart. He secretly sets up a chamber where he keeps her in suspended animation until some future time when he believes science will find a way to correct or replace organs, in this case, her heart. Edward sets up an intricate “Family Trust” which is run in secret by the family for 86 years. Finally, advances in heart transplants leads to her "rebirth" which makes for a powerful story of emotional turmoil and intrigue. Elizabeth learns about the lives of her son, and grandchildren, by reading the journals written by her dead husband and subsequent off-spring, which she never knew. Her view of the world as it was stressed and amazed at the many advances in technology, medicine, and even the changes in everyday life. The world wars and her family’s part in them takes time and patience to even begin to understand, let alone to believe. Emotions and her belief in the present reality are strained when she is brought back to life by her great-grandson, who is the same age as her husband had been when she ostensibly died. He also looks and sounds just like her Edward. What happens when they fall in love, and how will they handle the truth of who they actually are? Most importantly, how will the public react?
