Chapter 3 discusses teaching estimation by using number skills, mathematical common sense, and concepts of size. The chapter also includes brief sections on practices in the trades regarding rounding numbers up and down. Chapter 4 covers formulas, including the terminology of formulas, their place in school mathematics, and how formulas are taught in vocational courses. Chapter 5 covers decimals, including the following: (1) the meaning of decimal notation; (2) the use of zero in decimals; (3) essential zeros; (4) the order of size in decimals; (5) rounding; (6) multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, and 1,000; and (7) multiplication and division by numbers smaller than 1. Chapter 6 covers common fraction ideas, equivalent fractions, and simplifying fractions. Chapter 7 deals with percentages by examining the following: (1) common percentage ideas; (2) comparing two quantities as a percentage; (3) decimals and percentages; (4) finding a percentage of a quantity; and (5) working out 100 percent when given another percentage. Chapter 8 offers worked examples of math problems relating to fitting and machining, plumbing or building, automotive engineering, and commercial cookery. The author has had, during the last ten years, considerable experience in organizing and conducting intermediate and secondary technical schools. During this time he has noticed the inability of the regular teachers in mathematics to give the pupils the training in commercial and rule of thumb methods of solving mathematical problems that are so necessary in everyday life. A pupil graduates from the course in mathematics without being able to "commercialize" or apply his mathematical knowledge in such a way as to meet the needs of trade and industry. It is to overcome this difficulty that the author has prepared this book on vocational mathematics. He does not believe in doing away with the regular course of mathematics but in supplementing it with a practical course. This course may take the place of the first year algebra and the first year geometry in vocational classes in which it is not desirable to give the traditional course in algebra and geometry. This book may be used by the regular teacher in mathematics and by the shop teacher. . It can be used in the shop in teaching mathematics and in providing- drill problems upon the shop work. A course based upon thejeontahts'p 4he book should be provided before pupils finish their trailing, so that they may become skillful in applying the principles of mathematics to the daily needs of manufacturing life. Book excerpt: The ubiquitousness of the Internet and communication technologies is having a significant influence on teaching and learning practices both in terms of what is learnt and how it is learnt. Mathematics teaching and learning in vocational education is also facing new challenges due to the enormous influence of new technologies on workplace practices. This study makes an attempt to design and implement a web-based learning environment to facilitate and enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics in a TAFE setting. The design and development of the web-based learning environment aimed at providing opportunities for more engaging and authentic learning activities and promoting the use of new learning technologies in mathematics teaching and learning. The study included a practical orientation of action to bring about a change in the practice of teaching of mathematics in vocational education. Using a design-based research approach the study comprised two cycles. In the first cycle three mathematics teachers were involved in exploring Internet based mathematics resources and participated in the design of a website that consisted of twelve units of basic mathematical topics with facilities for both synchronous and asynchronous communication. This web-based learning environment known as Maths Concurrent Assistance (MCA) Online was then trialled with a number of mathematics teachers and students in mainly workshop mode. In the second cycle, the web-based learning environment was customised for a business mathematics module in a diploma course and trialled with a semester long course taught on campus in a blended learning format. Data obtained through classroom observation, WebCT logs, discussion board postings, test results and nterviews were used to explore and analyse issues concerned with students' participation, access and use and the role of teacher in facilitating mathematics learning. The study also included a quasi-experimental research design to compare achievement and attitude of students who participated in this experiment with another group of students taught the same content by the same teacher in a traditional face-to-face mode with no Internet activities. Results from the study indicate that students' successful participation in web-based mathematics learning in vocational education is contingent upon factors including learner readiness, interface design and course design. Students' attitude towards mathematics appeared to influence their participation in web-based mathematical activities. Although computer skills and confidence are necessary for successful participation in web-based activities, students' attitude towards mathematics played a more important role in determining their participation.
