Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By carefully examining a handful of great exemplars of teaching from various spiritual traditions and cultural contexts, this book breaks new ground in helping both prospective and practicing teachers discover and deepen their sense of spiritual calling. The masters examined in this book are found in many venues. Some appear in biographies, such as Yogananda, the great Hindu saint of the 20th century, in his Autobiography of a Yogi, or Eugene Herrigel and his Zen archery master in Zen in the Art of Archery. Some are enshrined in literature, such as St. Thomas More in Robert Bolt's dramatization of More's life, A Man for All Seasons. Others, like the Yaqui medicine man Don Juan in Carlos Castaneda's Journey to Ixtlan, occupy an intriguing region that moves on the misty boundaries between biography and fiction. A few even reside in academia-among them the Jewish theologian Martin Buber, author of the 20th century theological classic I and Thou. In encountering these exemplars of spiritual teaching, each teacher may discover and uniquely appropriate ways to further his or her own spiritual growth as a teacher, as well as the growth of his or her students in the most traditional to the most experimental school settings. Special emphasis is placed on the perspectives and needs of public school teachers and administrators. At the end of each chapter are "Topics for Discussion" and "Topics for Research" to stimulate further thought and research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TEACHING MYSTERIES 101 It is the fall of 1970, and Andrea Jackson is beginning her career as a high school English teacher in a small, northern Illinois town. Her challenges begin during the first class of the first day, when her Mystery Stories students come in expecting to learn to be detectives rather than study English. Andrea shares the ups and downs of first-year teaching with her fellow rookie English teachers, Chrissie and Bud. All of them are unsure how to deal with their stern department chairman, Susan, who advises and evaluates them. A few weeks into the school year, one of Andrea’s students falls victim to a crime committed at the high school. To her dismay, the list of suspects includes another of her students and more than one staff member. Andrea’s efforts to navigate first-year teaching, along with her growing curiosity about the crime, fill her days and keep her awake nights. Her life and work become increasingly complicated when the Mystery Stories students insist on investigating the crime — with or without her cooperation. Their efforts, along with her involvement, eventually put all of them in jeopardy.

Each mystery presents opportunities for students to create questions, form hypotheses, test their ideas, and come up with explanations. Focused on concepts such as periodic motion, thermodynamics, temperature and energy, and sound, these mysteries draw students into the stories by grounding them in experiences students are familiar with, providing them with a foundation for classroom discussion and inquiry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting U.S. history as contested interpretations of compelling problems, this text offers a clear set of principles and strategies, together with case studies and "Mystery Packets" of documentary materials from key periods in American history, that teachers can use with their students to promote and sustain problem-finding and problem-solving in history and social studies classrooms. Structured to encourage new attitudes toward history as hands-on inquiry, conflicting interpretation, and myriad uncertainties, the whole point is to create a user-friendly way of teaching history "as it really is" ─ with all its problems, issues, unknowns, and value clashes. Students and teachers are invited to think anew as active participants in learning history rather than as passive sponges soaking up pre-arranged and often misrepresented people and events. New in the Second Edition: New chapters on Moundbuilders, and the Origins of Slavery; expanded Gulf of Tonkin chapter now covering the Vietnam and Iraq wars; teaching tips in this edition draw on years of teacher experience in using mysteries in their classrooms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a philosophy, methodology, and examples for history instruction that are active, imaginative, and provocative, this text presents a fully developed pedagogy based on problem-solving methods that promote reasoning and judgment and restore a sense of imagination and participation to classroom learning. It is designed to draw readers into the detective process that characterizes the work of professional historians and social scientists ─ sharing raw data, defining terms, building interpretations, and testing competing theories. An inquiry framework drives both the pedagogy and the choice of historical materials, with selections favoring the unsolved, controversial, and fragmented rather than the neatly wrapped up analysis of past events. Teaching World History as Mystery: Provides a balanced combination of interestingly arranged historical content, and clearly explained instructional strategies Features case studies of commonly and not so commonly taught topics within a typical world/global history curriculum using combinations of primary and secondary documents Discusses ways of dealing with ethical and moral issues in world history classrooms, drawing students into persisting questions of historical truth, bias, and judgment

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of clues... clues to the awe and immensity of God that will lead children to think about, rather than "learn" about, God. Instead of teaching in the traditional sense, it provides "clues" for a shared journey toward discovering the Divine Mystery at the core of the universe. The recent trend in Christian education has been to emphasize knowledge, and to make church school more fun and entertaining. But in our zeal to pass on the basics of the faith, we have often neglected to guide children into truly experiencing the full wonder of the almighty. We have taught them about religion, but we have not always helped them to establish a deep and meaningful relationship with God. This book approaches the mission from a different perspective - one that identifies and reaffirms the spiritual experiences young people are already having. Each chapter suggest numerous ideas for use in classes, as well as a "Time to Reflect" section for adults to recall and meditate on their own spiritual life as children. Teaching The Mystery Of God To Children is an essential resource for any parent or church school teacher who is interested in the spiritual development of their children. Subjects discussed include: The Bible Art Symbols Music Sounds Movement Words Poetry Nature Sacred Space Koans and Miracles Death Judy Gattis Smith is the author of more than a dozen books, including Teaching to Wonder, Planting Spiritual Seeds, and Developing a Child's Spiritual Growth through the Senses (Abingdon). She has also written three books for grandmothers, and she is a regular contributor to Episcopal Teacher magazine. Smith has led more than 200 workshops and seminars, and has been a keynote speaker at conferences throughout the United States.
