Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching Literature in the Grammar Grades and High School There has been much criticism, during the past two decades, of the teaching of English literature in our schools and colleges. The earlier teaching of English was characterized largely by a type of instruction which tried to inspire pupils through their contact with the classics of our language, and to awaken in them an enduring love of both poetry and prose. The work being in large part interpretation and somewhat inspirational in nature, calling for much from the teacher and less than in most other subjects from the pupils, teachers in other subjects more susceptible to drill tended to characterize the instruction as "snap work." Stung by this criticism, teachers of English went for a time to the other extreme, substituted a detailed analysis of a few masterpieces for the more extensive reading which had formerly been the practice, and in time reduced the instruction to a monotonous and almost lifeless type of intensive study. Historical and mythological allusions were to be looked up, collateral reading was prescribed, notebooks were to be compiled, and the work was made so heavy, and often so uninteresting, that no charge of "snap" could be brought against it. As all questions instruction have recently come to be studied more in the light of a sound pedagogy, certain changes in our ideas as to desirable means and ends in instruction have resulted. One of these changes has been a marked reaction against a "grind" type of teaching in a subject so full of life and feeling as literature. Book Synopsis Teaching Grammar through Literature by : Anna McGlynn
Download or read book Teaching Grammar through Literature written by Anna McGlynn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential guide offers a fresh approach to integrating grammar effectively into the classroom as a vital strand of English that both enlivens and enriches students’ understanding of literature. It aims to demystify grammar and empower teachers with the knowledge, inspiration and practical ideas to confidently teach grammar to students at any stage of their secondary education. The authors demonstrate that routinely weaving grammar into lessons and the study of literature, rather than teaching it as an abstract set of rules, enables students to see grammar in a more flexible, enjoyable and exciting way. Each chapter clearly defines complex terminology and provides an essential overview of relevant subject knowledge. With multiple examples of textual analysis and a variety of adaptable lesson plans for popular Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 texts, the book shows how grammatical requirements can be taught in a lively, literature-based manner, developing students’ understanding and improving the quality of their creative and academic writing. Taught like this, grammar becomes a decoding tool: a key to unlocking deeper meaning within texts that enriches the reading experience. Considering a wide range of texts, Teaching Grammar through Literature thoroughly works through core grammatical concepts such as: sentences and sentence clauses nouns verbs determiners punctuation extension vocabulary. This book is a source of fresh and exciting ideas for all practising secondary school English teachers. It will revolutionalise teaching and enrich students' understanding of literature and the grammatical theory within.
Book Synopsis Teaching Secondary English by : Daniel Sheridan
Download or read book Teaching Secondary English written by Daniel Sheridan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Teaching Secondary English is thoroughly revised, but its purpose has not changed. Like the popular first edition, it balances content knowledge with methodology, theory with practice, and problem-posing with suggested solutions. The tone and format are inviting, while addressing student-readers on a professional level. Rather than attempting to cover everything, the text provides a framework and materials for teaching a secondary English methods course, while allowing considerable choice for the instructor. The focus is on teaching literature, writing, and language--the basics of the profession. Attention is given to the issues that arise as one seeks to explore what it means to "teach English." The problems and tensions of becoming a teacher are discussed frankly, in a manner that helps students figure out their own attitudes and solutions. Features: * Focuses on a few central concepts in the teaching of secondary English * Provides an anthology of 22 readable and challenging essays on key topics--allowing students to hear a variety of voices and opinions * Includes an applications section for each reading that extends the discussion and asks students to explore problems and grapple with important issues related to the articles * Offers short writing assignments in questions that follow the readings and in brief writing tasks in the applications, and a longer writing assignment at the end of each chapter * Addresses student readers directly without talking down to them New in the Second Edition: * This edition is shorter, tighter, and easier to use. * The opening and concluding chapters more directly address the concerns of new teachers. * The anthology is substantially updated (of the 22 articles included, 14 are new to this edition). * Each essay is preceded by a brief introduction and followed by questions for further thought. * There are fewer applications, but these are more extensive and more fully integrated within the text. * A writing assignment is provided at the end of each chapter. * Interviews with college students--before and after student teaching--are included in Chapters 1 and 6. * The bibliographies at the end of each chapter are fully updated.

Download or read book Less is More written by Kimberly Campbell and published by Stenhouse Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Less Is More is full of powerful ideas for teaching with short, provocative text. This book broadens and extends our available teaching tools and materials, and can help engage all students. It is a valuable resource for language arts teachers. --Cris Tovani Language arts teachers want all of their students to love literature and embrace the novels they assign. The classroom reality is that many students are not ready or motivated to immerse themselves in an entire novel. In order to reach and engage all students, teachers need to look beyond novels alone and embrace a richer variety of literature. In Less Is More Kimberly Hill Campbell draws on research as well as her own classroom experiences to show how short texts engage a wide range of middle and high school students. She shares her discovery of the power of short texts to support her students' skills as readers, writers, and students of literature. Kimberly shows how short texts can be integrated into the curriculum, without sacrificing required novels. Chapters examine different genres of short text, such as short stories, essays, memoir, and graphic novels. Each chapter provides reading, writing, and response strategies as well as a broad selection of short text resources that have proven effective with a wide range of students.

Download or read book Teaching Literature in High School written by Thomas M. McCann and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In looking for an approach to teaching literature in high school, teachers largely fall back on the methods that they had experienced as students. These practices often involve a teacher assigning a complex work of literature and then assessing students’ reading through in-class recitations or quizzes. Teachers typically dominate the discourse and sometimes take charge of the task by reading aloud whole swathes of texts to their students. We know from our own experience as teachers, supervisors of teachers and student teachers, and researchers in the field that students are often bored with these approaches and teachers are frequently frustrated with learners’ unenthusiastic responses to the teachers’ favorite works of literature. There has to be a better way. This book offers approaches to engage students in productive procedures for reading complex texts and provides sample activities to allow learners to practice those procedures.
