If you can't read the basic Spanish prompt, don't worry. Just have the student read it while you cover up the answer on the right side. If the student says the answer correctly, move to the next line. If not, correct him. Then go to the next line. That's all there is to it. "How to Teach English to a Spanish Speaker" explains how to know when to advance your student to the next lesson as well as how to watch for common pronunciation errors common to Spanish speakers. It expands their creative experiences and allows them to venture into the unknown. It also expands their vocabulary and develops concepts that are going to help children with communication skills and prepare them for academic success. Reading is the critical foundation for learning. All children should have the opportunity to learn and have the right to excel to the best of their ability, especially in reading. Children come to school with different needs, and because of this, it is a challenge to get through to all of the children. If the expectations are high for everyone, then everyone will have a better chance of reading to their potential. A teacher has to be open to and on the lookout for many ways to teach the same objective because children come to school from different backgrounds, experiences, and abilities. The more the teacher knows of a child’s background and language experiences, the more insight there is into his/her learning process. In Learning to Read in English and Spanish Made Easy: A Guide for Teachers, Tutors, and Parents, Susie G. Navarijo shares the unique methods she developed over three decades of teaching reading in the first grade. She also shares experiences she has had in trying to help children with special needs and backgrounds. Her insight and experiences are sure to be of help to anyone who wishes to help children of all ages and abilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ¿Por qué? 101 Questions about Spanish is for anyone who wants to understand how Spanish really works. Standard textbooks and grammars describe the "what" of Spanish - its vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and pronunciation - but ¿Por qué? explains the "why". Judy Hochberg draws on linguistic principles, Hispanic culture, and language history to answer questions such as: Why are so many Spanish verbs irregular? - Why does Spanish have different ways to say "you"? - Why is h silent? - Why doesn't Spanish use apostrophes? - Why does Castilian Spanish have the th sound? Packed with information, guidance, and links to further research, ¿Por qué? is an accessible study guide that is suitable for Spanish students, instructors, native speakers, and the general reader. It is a valuable supplementary text for serious students of Spanish at all levels, from beginning to advanced. ¿Por qué? also covers topics usually left to specialized books, including the evolution of Spanish, how children and adults learn Spanish, and the status of languages that co-exist with Spanish, from Catalan to Spanish sign language to the indigenous languages of Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The worldwide spread, diversification, and globalization of the English language in the course of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries has significant implications for English Language Teaching and teacher education. We are currently witnessing a paradigm shift towards Teaching English as an International Language (TEIL) that aims to promote multilingualism and awareness of the diversity of Englishes, increase exposure to this diversity, embrace multiculturalism, and foster cross-cultural awareness. Numerous initiatives that embrace TEIL can be observed around the world, but ELT and teacher education in Germany (and other European countries) appear to be largely unaffected by this development, with standard British and American English and the monolingual native speaker (including the corresponding cultural norms) still being very much at the center of attention. The present volume addresses this gap and is the first of its kind to showcase recent initiatives that aim at introducing TEIL into ELT and teacher education in Germany, but which have applicability and impact for other countries with comparable education systems and ‘traditional’ ELT practices in the Expanding Circle. The chapters in this book provide a balanced mix of conceptual, empirical, and practical studies and offer the perspectives of the many stakeholders involved in various settings of English language education whose voices have not often been heard, i.e., students, university lecturers, trainee teachers, teacher educators, and in-service teachers. It therefore adds significantly to the limited amount of previous work on TEIL in Germany and bridges the gap between theory and practice that will not only be relevant for researchers, educators, and practitioners in English language education in Germany but other educational settings that are still unaffected by the shift towards TEIL.

Book excerpt: Part memoir and part philosophical look at why we travel, filled with stories of Matt Kepnes' adventures abroad, an exploration of wanderlust and what it truly means to be a nomad. New York Times bestselling author of How to Travel the World on $50 a Day, Matthew Kepnes knows what it feels like to get the travel bug. After meeting some travelers on a trip to Thailand in 2005, he realized that living life meant more than simply meeting society's traditional milestones. Over 500,000 miles, 1,000 hostels, and 90 different countries later, Matt has compiled his favorite stories, experiences, and insights into this travel manifesto. Filled with the color and perspective that only hindsight and self-reflection can offer, these stories get to the real questions at the heart of wanderlust. Travel questions that transcend the basic "how-to," and plumb the depths of what drives us to travel — and what extended travel around the world can teach us about life, ourselves, and our place in the world. Ten Years a Nomad is a heartfelt comprehension of the insatiable craving for travel, unraveling the authenticity of being a vagabond, not for months but for a fulfilling decade.

Book excerpt: This newly revised text, Teaching English Learners in Inclusive Classrooms, updates and expands upon issues of great concern to those working with students who are English learners as well as having special learning challenges. Given the unacceptable school drop-out rates of these students, this book provides practical tools and strategies for educators to approach the unique learning needs of these students. It draws upon the most current laws and research in the interconnected fields of bilingual and multicultural education, language and literacy, and special needs. Additionally, Dr. Durán draws upon her extensive experiences via classroom teaching, university-level instruction, and textbook writing in these fields to present a highly useful compendium of ideas. The range of chapters exemplifies the width and breadth of this material. A sampling of these chapters include topics such as functional language, teaching students with more extensive needs, working with cross-cultural and linguistic diverse students in the U.S. and Central America, helping students with autism and includes information in the area of transition for mild/moderate and students with more extensive needs. There is also information as before on literacy and a chapter in the content subjects as it relates to social studies as well as a chapter on families of cross-cultural students. Many of the chapters look to use of direct instruction approaches that have proven to be successful strategies in addressing these educational areas. Teachers and teacher trainers will find this clear, well-written text to be an invaluable resource in addressing the needs of myriad and unique students.
