Book excerpt: When Teachers, Clergy, and Caretakers Sexually Abuse Children and Adolescents addresses the current and historical issues that revolve around children and adolescents who are sexually abused. This book provides updated and timely case examples involving teachers, clergy and others that represent the fact that sexual abuse continues as an important topic that needs ongoing education and prevention. As noted in this book there are present day examples of allegations of sexual abuse that continue to represent human error, denial, and misjudgment regarding the best interest of children and adolescents. The theories behind the "why" of child sexual abuse, and also the vast diversity of the sexual abuser population, are addressed. The most current and updated diagnosing, assessing, and interviewing techniques are presented for the reader to address within the context of what the present literature and research cites as most appropriate, standard, and gold standard professional behaviors and assessment tools. The area of technology, online sexting, and other related issues is also reviewed. The treatment effectiveness and ineffectiveness regarding what we know to date is presented. Another most important issue is the burnout rate for those working in the field of sexual abuse and sex crimes in general and this too is addressed along with prevention notes by the authors.

Book excerpt: This study investigates secondary school students' experiences of sexual harassment--and all the bullying, teasing, and touching it entails--and compares the results with those of the 1993 study "Hostile Hallways: The AAUW Survey on Sexual Harassment in America's Schools." Topics in the survey include students' knowledge and awareness of sexual harassment, personal experiences with sexual harassment in their school lives, and the emotional and behavioral impact of these experiences. A nationally representative sample of 2064 public school students in 8th through 11th grades was interviewed. Using self-administered questionnaires, 1559 students were surveyed during an English class, and 505 students were surveyed online. Students' answers were analyzed, where possible, to identify any difference by gender, race/ethnicity, grade level, and area of school. As in 1993, nearly all students say they know what sexual harassment is, and they provided their own definitions when asked. Major findings reveal the following: significant numbers of students are afraid of being hurt or bothered in their school lives; sexual harassment is widespread in school life; school sexual harassment has a negative impact on students' emotional and educational lives; students today are more likely than those in 1993 to say their schools have a policy or distribute literature on sexual harassment; nearly all students surveyed know what sexual harassment is; the most upsetting examples of sexual harassment in school life involve speech as well as actions; a sizeable minority of students reports high levels of sexual harassment in school; most experiences involve students harassing students, although many experiences involve school adults harassing students; and slightly more than half (54%) of students say they have sexually harassed someone during their school lives. Contains 29 figures and an afterword. Appended is the research methodology with additional figures. (BT)

The Publisher For three years, a Japanese concentration camp in the Philippines was home for Church of the Brethren missionaries Edward and Helen Angeny during WW II. Their tale of replacing murdered missionaries in China in 1940 and their subsequent imprisonment was aptly written into this memoir by Helen Angeny when she was 80 years old. Their internment included hunger as well as humor, frustration as well as joy, and threats as well as miracles. It also included the birth of their first child soon after imprisonment. The story ended well for the 500 civilian internees but only after MacArthur's troops accidentally came upon this POW group which had been previously unknown to the US government. Helen Angeny's reflections as well as her soul are revealed in this thought-provoking historical narrative.

Book excerpt: A shocking exposé of sexual abuse and the struggle for justice at one of America's most prestigious schools In June 2012, Amos Kamil's New York Times Magazine cover story, "Prep-School Predators," caused a shock wave that is still rippling. In his piece, Kamil detailed a decades-long pattern of sexual abuse at the highly prestigious Horace Mann School in the Bronx. After the article appeared, Kamil closely observed the fallout. While the article revealed the misdeeds of three teachers, this was just the beginning: an extraordinary twenty-two former Horace Mann teachers and administrators have since been accused of abuse. In Great Is the Truth, Kamil and his coauthor, Sean Elder, tell the riveting story of how one of the country's leading schools was beset by scandal. In 1970, Horace Mann hired R. Inslee "Inky" Clark Jr. as its headmaster. As Yale's wunderkind dean of admissions, Clark had helped revolutionize the Ivy League by recruiting a more diverse student body. In the coming years, he would raise Horace Mann to new heights of academic distinction even as serious complaints against beloved teachers were ignored. Kamil and Elder introduce those teachers, among them a popular football coach who had reportedly tried out for the Washington Redskins, a distinguished conductor who took his prize students on foreign trips, an otherworldly English teacher who discussed Eastern philosophy over tea and helped tend the school's gardens, and another English instructor, who told his students that they were mere dust under his foot in comparison to Shakespeare. In gripping detail, Kamil and Elder relate what happened as survivors of abuse came forward and sought redress. We see the school and its influential backers circle the wagons. We meet Horace Mann alumni who work to change New York State's sexual abuse laws. We follow a celebrity lawyer's contentious efforts to achieve a settlement. And we encounter a former teacher who candidly recalls his inappropriate relationships with students. Kamil and Elder also examine other institutions-from prep schools to the Catholic Church-that have sought to atone for their complicity in abuse and to prevent it from reoccurring. "Great is the truth and it prevails" may be the motto of Horace Mann, but for many alumni the truth remains all too hard to come by. This book is essential reading for anyone trying to understand how an elite institution can fail those in its charge, and what can be done about it.

Book excerpt: "Invisible Target" is a true, detailed account of one girl's experience of educator sexual abuse at the hands of her middle school teacher. It follows her journey, beginning with her tumultuous childhood, meeting the teacher, and the grooming process he created to lure her into a false sense of trust and ultimate betrayal. After years of abuse and manipulation, she finally found the courage to bravely break away from her abuser. With excerpts from newspaper articles and an actual court impact statement, this book gives you a clear picture of how the epidemic of educator sexual abuse begins, progresses, and affects so many innocent lives. "Invisible Target" is more than a memoir. With thought-provoking questions at the close of each chapter, this book serves as a strong educational tool for students, parents, teachers, and administrators by shedding light on the dynamics of educator sexual abuse so that school can be a safe haven for every child. "I highly recommend that "Invisible Target" be read and discussed in every school community in the country." -John M. Seryak, M.Ed. "This book can help students identify predators, parents to support their children, and educators to prevent abuse." -Charol Shakeshaft, Ph.D. "Although the topic is obviously very disturbing and disheartening, Andrea's story is one of hope." -Robert J. Shoop, Ph.D.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to identify and prevent sexual exploitation of students in your school! Though most schools are safe environments for students, research shows that sexual abuse of children at all levels is on the rise. Recent media attention has captured the public's growing concern about the number of cases involving boys molested by adult females. Nationally recognized risk management expert and author Robert J. Shoop was recently quoted in USA Today (November 30, 2005), noting that "In the past 18 months, at least 25 cases nationwide involved female teachers molesting students." He has also addressed the topic of sexual exploitation as a guest on CNN, The Today Show, ABC's 20/20, ESPN's Outside the Lines, and other independent television talk shows. In his new book, Shoop identifies the early warning signs of sexual abuse in schools. Based on interviews, newspaper reports, journal articles, court records, and personal experiences gained from 25 years of consulting with school districts in the areas of harassment, abuse, risk management and negligence, this book demonstrates the critical need to implement strategies so students are protected while also learning how to protect themselves. Shoop's two-fold objectives are: How to spot sexual exploitation and what early warning signs to look for and How to stop sexual exploitation--actions that schools and parents can take to prevent sexual abuse, and how to respond promptly and appropriately if it occurs Sexual Exploitation in Schools prepares educators to manage one of the most difficult and troubling issues in our public and private schools. Explanations are provided concerning the legal context, consequences and pathology of sexual exploitation, district and employee rights, conducting an investigation, and steps educators and parents can take so that students will be safe in their learning environment, leading to a successful and healthy future.

Book excerpt: With an estimated 5 million students in United States schools having been assaulted sexually by teachers, why is no one calling for investigations or law enforcement crackdowns? Why have there been no campaigns to ban the offenders from schools? And why is it today that in many states there aren't even a single requirement that such predator attacks be reported to education licensing agencies? In this shocking and fact-filled narrative I have little doubt that the many hidden truths are going to shock you. You're about to read proof-positive coverage of actual cases that shows when the attacker is a female and the student a male, such assaults are treated as a joke, with a hand-slap for the teacher, and some ribald locker room humor directed at the student. Are you and I even accessories to these crimes? You're about to find out!

Book excerpt: "The breadth of the book's approach to the subject is impressive in its extensive list of reference will commend it to students, while its brief case vignettes and carefully argued points make it a valuable theoretical book for the counselling practitioner." --Diane Hammersley in Counselling Matthew Mendel is the first to conduct a national survey among male survivors of sexual abuse. The results of his findings present a sobering study of just how extensive this kind of abuse is in terms of types of sexual activity and number and gender of perpetrators. The Male Survivor examines the phenomenon and long-term impact of sexual abuse on male children, and dispells many myths regarding the invulnerability of male victims. In this pioneering effort, Mendel argues that various societal myths and beliefs have led to a profound underrecognition of male sexual abuse, and that increased attention to, and acknowledgment of, male victimization is needed to reduce the isolation of male survivors, as well as aid in the decrease of abuse incidents. Modifications and revisions of conceptual frameworks regarding long-term sequelae of childhood sexual abuse are also proposed as they apply to the male experience. Clinical practitioners, interns, advanced students and researchers will find the cutting edge research of The Male Survivor to be a valuable contribution in the efforts to understand and treat this population so wounded by early sexual abuse. "The Male Survivor is an important book. Not only does it provide a comprehensive and in-depth literature review (the best I've seen in this area), it also carefully explicates the specific social and psychological issues faced by men who were abused as children. Dr. Mendel has written a scholarly yet clinically useful volume, balancing research with case histories and psychological theory with social analysis." --John N. Briere, University of Southern California School of Medicine

Book excerpt: No one asks for the childhood they get, and no child ever deserved to go to Chartwell Manor. For Glenn Head, his two years spent at the now-defunct Mendham, NJ, boarding school ― run by a serial sexual and emotional abuser of young boys in the early 1970s ― left emotional scars in ways that he continues to process. This graphic memoir ― a book almost 50 years in the making ― tells the story of that experience, and then delves with even greater detail into the reverberations of that experience in adulthood, including addiction and other self-destructive behavior. Head tells his story with unsparing honesty, depicting himself as a deeply flawed human struggling to make sense of the childhood he was given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglophone world is gripped by a moral panic centred on child abuse in general and fear of the paedophile in particular. Evidence suggests an alarming rise in the number of false allegations of sexual abuse being made against teachers, and demonstrates that the fallout from being falsely accused is far-reaching and sometimes tragic. Many people in this position cannot sustain family relationships, have breakdowns, and are often unable to return to the classroom when their ordeal is over. Researching Sex and Lies in the Classroom draws on in-depth qualitative research exploring the experiences, perceptions and consequences for those who have been falsely accused of sexual misconduct with pupils, and for the family members, friends and colleagues affected by or involved in the accusation process. The book also highlights the dilemmas and difficulties the authors themselves have faced researching this field, such as: ethical and methodological concerns over whether or not the teachers had indeed been falsely accused, or were guilty and taking advantage of this project to construct an alternative, innocent identity the difficulty of obtaining institutional ethical clearance to undertake and publish research which challenges master narratives concerning children and their protection the reluctance of funders to support research in controversial and sensitive areas. Researching Sex and Lies in the Classroom reveals findings which are both informative and shocking. It interrogates the appropriateness of current investigative and judicial procedures and practices, and it raises general questions about the surveillance and control of research and academic voice. It will be of great benefit to academics and researchers interested in this field, as well as postgraduate students, teachers and other professionals working with the fear of allegations of abuse.
