Many possible factors such as teacher degree levels, teacher preparation, teacher licensure, years of experience, and teacher academic proficiency have been considered and their impact examined. In contrast, little consideration has been given to factors relating to student perceptions of teacher style and effectiveness. What students, specifically middle school students, believe about their teachers' competence, level of care and support, and other more affective factors may be the missing link in identifying factors that play a role in student achievement. -- The study detailed in this dissertation was designed to examine student perceptions of the style and effectiveness of teachers and to make connections between these perceptions and other factors such as gender, race, grade level, socioeconomic status, achievement, attendance, and behavior. The study utilized the Student Perception of Teacher Style Scale (SPOTS) which measures teacher style as directive or nondirective. The survey also included a student information section were students rated their teachers' levels of effectiveness and reported demographics information. -- An analysis of the data revealed that middle school students perceive their English language arts teachers' styles to be directive and their levels of effectiveness to be very effective. The study found no correlation between perceived teaching style and level of effectiveness. There were only minor statistically significant differences within the variables analyzed.

Book excerpt: The use of a multi-tiered system of supports framework has been of growing interest in addressing issues related to disruptive behaviors and school suspensions. The purpose of this mixed-methods sequential, explanatory study was to examine middle school teachers’ perceptions (behavioral expectations defined, behavioral expectations taught, and an ongoing system for rewarding behavioral expectations) of their efforts toward implementing Schoolwide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports with fidelity in two middle schools within an urban school district located in Georgia. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, homogeneity of variance Levene’s test, t-tests, factorial analysis, a one-way analysis of variance, post-hoc tests, frequencies and percentages of suspension, and coding to discover themes from focus group responses. Findings were that teacher participants who were SWPBIS members were assumed were assumed to be more knowledgeable and to know more about policy knew more about policy and procedures than non-SWPBIS members. The results indicated that there was statistically significant difference in years of full-time teaching experience between 6 – 10 years and 11 to 15 years and between 11 to 15 years and more than 20 years. In-school and out-of-school suspensions in M. N. Middle School were less than those in C. M. Middle School to a statistically significant degree, and students received fewer suspensions. Focus group findings showed that the majority of participants held high expectations for student behavior. A review of the results implied that schools with increased disruptive behaviors and suspensions may be motivated to adopt a discipline program. The implications for positive social change are dependent on middle school teachers effectively using SWPBIS with fidelity to improve students’ behavior.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate middle school mathematics teachers' perceptions of student self-efficacy and its influence on their instructional practices. Fifteen districts from the southeast and south central regions of Pennsylvania agreed to take part in the study. The researcher contacted seventh and eighth grade mathematics teachers from these districts requesting volunteers to complete a self-administered SurveyMonkey questionnaire. Fifty-seven teachers responded to the questionnaire with five of these teachers also participating in the phone interviews. The survey instruments explored the following areas of the construct from the teachers' perspective: 1) examples of student self-efficacy observed in the classroom, 2) the impact of self-efficacy on students' motivation to learn, 3) the selection of instructional practices informed by one's understandings of student self-efficacy, and 4) professional development dedicated to student self-efficacy. Teachers in this study observed student behaviors consistent with prior research. Students demonstrating low self-efficacy gave up easily when they did not experience success while individuals with positive efficacious beliefs showed perseverance in solving challenging tasks. Although the majority of respondents believed that teachers had a role in building students' perceptions of capability, nearly half of these teachers reported little to no formal training on the construct. Teachers emphasized the importance of scaffolding material in an effort to promote mastery experiences, yet perceived students to favor a performance orientation. The assertion disputed earlier studies claiming that teachers guided their students to achievement goals through their selection of instructional practices. Conflicting testimony surfaced as respondents also cited examples of teaching strategies reflecting a performance approach. The study recommends further analysis, including classroom observations and students' perspectives, to resolve some of the disparities that emerged.
