Book excerpt: Previous research has indicated that more democratic approaches to teaching in the physical education classroom build equity and create the necessary space for students to develop their voice in the physical education curriculum. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of purposefully negotiating the physical education curriculum on one teacher and a middle school class. Participants were three middle school teachers with varied teaching experience and a single middle school class for each teacher of either girls, boys, or mixed genders. Three theoretical perspectives guided data collection and analysis: critical feminism, hegemonic masculinity, and critical tradition. Data were collected through a variety of qualitative techniques: non-participant observation, stimulated recall interviews, reflective journal, formal interviews, informal interviews, focus group interviews, and critical incident reports. Analytic induction and constant comparison were used to analyze the data. Findings revealed that more professional development needs to be provided with ongoing mentor support to effectively incorporate democratic approaches in the physical education classroom. Further, the first study's results indicated that, in an all-girls class, negotiation empowered and motivated the students to participate, as well as encouraging the lower skilled girls to participate in the process equally with higher skilled girls. The second study's results were similar, reinforcing the suggestion that hegemonic masculinity can be partially negated through participation in a negotiated curriculum and that higher skilled boys can reconnect with their lower skilled peers. The third study showed that curriculum negotiation can be successfully implemented in mixed gender classes, allowing lower skilled boys and girls to reconnect with the curriculum. This research reinforces that building student voice and creating space for a symbiotic relationship between the teacher and students is a critical component in enhancing student engagement.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Research on social skills in physical education has shown that students' fair play behaviors remain underdeveloped unless teachers include social skills development into curriculum and instruction (Giebink & McKenzie, 1985; Hellison, 2003; Patrick, Ward, & Crouch, 1998; Siedentop, Hastie, & van der Mars, 2004). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Fair Play Instruction on two 8th-grade middle school classes. A multiple baseline design across two behaviors was used to assess the effects of Fair Play Instruction on: (a) students' active participation, and (b) students' helpful, harmful, and missed opportunities to help someone during a tag rugby unit. The Fair Play Instruction consisted of: (a) students developing a chart with fair play cues to be accomplished during the lesson, (b) teacher's prompts and praise during the lesson related to fair play behaviors, and (c) positive pinpointing of fair play behaviors used by students during the lesson closure. Social validity questionnaires assessing the acceptability of the intervention's goals, procedures, and outcomes were completed by students, the teacher, and a panel of physical education professionals. The results showed that the Fair Play Instruction was consistently effective in increasing students' active participation, and in decreasing waiting time for all participants. The Fair Play Instruction for helpful behaviors was not implemented in the same manner as the instruction for effort, and there was little difference between baseline and intervention for helpful behaviors. There was, however, a decrease in the number of harmful behaviors. The primary explanation for the difference in effects between the effort behaviors and the helpful behaviors was attributed to the frequency of prompts and praise. During the intervention for effort behaviors the teacher increased her frequency of prompting and praising substantially over baseline. This was not the case for helpful behaviors. The social validity questionnaire showed that Fair Play Instruction was considered as an acceptable pedagogy among the students, teacher, and a panel of physical education professionals. Although further investigation is needed, this study shows that Fair Play Instruction is a promising path to pursue the teaching of social skills in physical education.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an interdependent group-oriented contingency on the MVPA levels of middle school students during the fitness portion of physical education lessons. Participants were randomly selected target students from three intact eighth grade classes. A combination of a delayed multiple baseline and changing criterion design was implemented to determine the effects of the intervention on students' MVPA levels (dependent variable). MVPA levels were measured using momentary time sampling with definitions from the System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time. The independent variable consisted of an interdependent group-oriented contingency program. When target students reached a physical activity level criterion, for a specified number of days, the whole group was rewarded with a choice of activities. Inter-observer agreement, using the scored-interval method (during 20% of the lessons), for students' MVPA levels was 95% (range 91-100%) and 86% (range 74-94%) for the teacher's instructional behaviors. Visual analysis of graphic data was used to demonstrate the functional relationship between the intervention and MVPA levels. The overlap of data points, mean level changes, trends, variability within and between conditions, and number of days that the criteria were attained by the target students were used to establish the experimental effects. A higher level of student MVPA was demonstrated in all classes, during all three units when the initial criterion level of the intervention was implemented. During the second level of intervention, higher MVPA levels were demonstrated in one of three units. Across all three units, when the intervention was in effect, target students attained the MVPA criteria 21 of the 27 days (78%). Post-checks, conducted three weeks after the withdrawal of the contingency program, revealed that MVPA levels decreased slightly while remaining above the level observed during baseline.

Book excerpt: Most students arrive at game-focused physical education (PE) with neither the skills nor the tactical knowledge to be successful (Metzler, 2000). Although the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGFU) approach can enhance both on- and off-the-ball skills in game play performance (Griffin et al., 1995; Harvey et al., in review, Harvey 2003; Mitchell et al., 1995) results from previous research examining TGFU's effectiveness in PE settings have been equivocal. The present study was conducted to a) examine whether an 11-13 lesson unit of soccer taught using the TGFU approach would improve the Game Performance (GP) and Game Understanding (GU) of grade six PE students; and b) assess the relationship between GP and GU. Using a single subject, delayed multiple baseline design, three students (a higher-, moderate- and lower-skilled student) were randomly selected from four different grade six (11-12 years) PE classes (n=12). Data were collected on eight measures of GP (using the Game Performance Assessment Instrument, [GPAI]) and three measures of GU (using a modified version of the Verbal Protocol Analysis [VPA] technique). Students were followed over an 11-13 soccer unit taught using the TGFU approach. Elements of GP were formulated into four GP indices: Decision Making Index (DMI); Skill Execution Index (SEI); overall Game Performance Index (GPI); and Game Involvement (GI). The latter GI Index was further divided into appropriate/inappropriate on- and off-the-ball actions. All GP data were plotted graphically and analyzed visually using standard analytic criteria. Developments in the total, variety (i.e. 'goal', 'condition', action etc), and level of sophistication (i.e. '0', '1', '2' and '3') of coded verbal statements from the VPA GU task were assessed using a series of 12 separate repeated measures ANOVA's. The relationship between the GP and GU was also assessed using a Pearson correlation. All GP indices and GI remained somewhat variable between the baseline and intervention phases of the study and no individual participants improved on all GP and/or GI indices. However, 10 of the 12 participants improved at least one aspect of their GP, with seven improving their SEI, four their DMI and six their GPI when compared to baseline. Furthermore, nine of the 12 participants improved either their appropriate GI or reduced their inappropriate GI when compared to baseline, with 10 if the 12 participants improving their on-the-ball GI and five of 12 their off-the-ball GI when compared to baseline. In the VPA GU task, findings were also variable. Participants significantly increased the total number of coded verbal statements, and the use of condition 'if' and 'then' statements. In addition, they significantly decreased their use of affective 'opinion' statements. However, participants also demonstrated minimal improvements in their use of more sophisticated descriptions of the game play action. Finally, there appears to be no strong link between the way in which GP and GU emerges and/or develops, at least within the limitations of this study (i.e. such as the small sample size and the short duration of the learning period. However, a TGFU-based unit of soccer, focused on teaching both on- and off-the-ball elements of game play, is associated with developments in participants' GP and GI indices across participants from high, moderate and low skill levels. Moreover, although some improvements in GU were also observed (i.e. in terms of the variety, level of sophistication and total numbers of coded statements), these were less likely to discriminate skill levels than measures of GP.

While there has been a significant amount of research conducted on the impact that class size plays on the teaching process, much of this research has focused on core academic subjects. California education code exempts Physical Education (PE) from student cap limits, which has resulted in a disparity in class size between academic core subjects and PE. Despite this, there is a distinct lack of scholarship concerning class size and its impact on the teaching process in middle school PE. This research attempts to fill this gap by furthering our understanding of the impacts that class size has on the physical educator. A qualitative research design was used to collect data from a sample of seven teachers currently teaching middle school PE across three different school sites in the San Francisco Bay Area. The results of the study indicate that class size has a negative impact on the instructional practices of middle school PE teachers. In particular, teacher-student interaction, modification of activities, and class instruction were seen to be affected by larger class sizes. Along with that, teacher apathy was seen to occur when teachers become overwhelmed with the physical and emotional cost of teaching large classes in middle school PE. Physical educators need more support from their district in the form of professional development workshops with appropriate follow up as well as an increase in curriculum meeting time to ensure that educators receive the support they need to remain motivated towards the teaching process.

Physical education (PE) can have a vital influence on all children and adolescents' lifestyles, including those with disabilities. The purpose of this study was to examine attitudes of Saudi Arabian students with and without disabilities toward PE as well as their sport and activities preferences. A second purpose was to investigate the effect of school levels and student participation in physical activity after school on students' attitudes in PE. A final purpose was to determine predictors of enjoyment and perceived usefulness of PE. Participants were 11-19-year-old elementary, middle, and high school students from the Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. Participants included 195 students without disabilities and 205 with disabilities. Students were queried as to personal information, their student activities and sports preferences, and also completed the Student Attitudes Toward Physical Education Survey. The results of this study indicated that the overall mean score of attitudes of all participants toward PE was 3.48 on a scale of 1-5, indicting a moderate positive attitude toward PE. In general, students without disabilities had more positive attitudes toward physical education than students with disabilities. In addition, high school students without disabilities had less favorable attitudes toward PE than middle or elementary school students. Moreover, attitudes of high school students with disabilities toward PE showed less positive attitudes toward PE than middle and elementary school students with disabilities. However, there was no significant difference between elementary school students with disabilities and middle school students with disabilities in attitudes toward PE. Also, students who participated in physical activity outside school showed more positive attitudes toward PE than students who did not participate in physical activity outside school. Lastly, for students with disabilities, individual sport, competitive activities, cooperative activities, and aquatic activities were significant predictors of attitudes toward enjoyment of PE. For those without disabilities, cooperative activities, team sports, and fitness activities were significant predictors of attitudes toward enjoyment of PE.
