Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This module introduces Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS), an input-based language teaching method. TPRS provides a framework for teaching classes completely in the target language—even those at the beginner level. Through the steps of establishing meaning, creating a story that is acted out live in class, and reading, students understand and use the target language to communicate right away. Research shows that over time TPRS creates fluent speakers who excel both on traditional tests and—more importantly—in real-life situations. This is a valuable resource on TPRS for world language teachers, language teacher educators, and second language researchers.

Baker Ed D. and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Richard Baker's (2017) dissertation study. Baker found 16 common experiences lived by TPRS teachers, 12 obstacles to overcome, and he made 4 recommendations for teachers to consider in their classrooms. His Chapter 2 includes an extensive and critical review of many related research studies done on this methodological approach. TPRS is a research-based, evidence-based, and research-validated method. It has been found effective for promoting classroom second language acquisition (SLA) in a variety educational contexts, for learning several different languages, and from pre-literate, to K-12, with gifted and special needs students, at the university, and with adult learners at every level of language teaching and proficiency. The data suggest that educators and administrators should 'support' and not block TPRS use. Baker believes educational leaders, once aware of the research, will support, and 'not resist' TPRS teachers.

Then, when you're done, give it to your CEO to read... but make sure you get it back, because I guarantee you'll refer to it more than once." —Shawna Dennis, Senior Marketing Leader "Neuroscience, algorithms, illustrations, personal anecdotes and good, old-fashioned empathy: This entertaining and informative tome journeys to the core of how we communicate and pushes us, as marketers and humans, to do it better, "speeding the reader through and leaving us wanting more." —Ann Hynek, VP of global content marketing at Morgan Stanley Transform your business through the power of storytelling. Book excerpt: If teachers want to create positive change in the lives of their students, then they must first be able to create positive change in their own lives. This book describes a powerful professional development approach that merges the scholarship of critical pedagogy with the Theatre of the Oppressed. Participants "act up" in order to explore real-life scenarios and rehearse difficult conversations they are likely to have with colleagues, students, administrators, and parents. The authors have practiced the theatrical strategies presented here with pre- and in-service teachers in numerous contexts, including college courses, professional development seminars, and PreK–12 classrooms. They include step-by-step instructions with vivid photographs to help readers use these revolutionary theatre strategies in their own contexts for a truly unique learning experience.

Book excerpt: A joint effort from three thought leaders in educational research, linguistics, and literacy acquisition, this book explores the latest research that shows that compelling comprehensive input (CCI) is the baseline for all language and literacy development. It has been established that encouraging reading at all student levels supports literacy—not just literacy in terms of having basic reading and writing abilities, but in being able to perform advanced reading as well as having well-developed listening, speaking, and critical thinking skills. But what kind of reading has the most benefit for young learners? And why? Comprehensible and Compelling: The Causes and Effects of Free Voluntary Reading examines the most recent research and literacy testing results from around the world that document how reading materials must be comprehensible and compelling to bring success. It also presents research findings that show how libraries directly support literacy development, providing arguments and proof that will be invaluable in advocacy efforts for funding and program development.
