Book excerpt: Parent involvement is a crucial aspect of a child's education, reinforcing the importance of education both at home and at school. However, parents of ESL students can have little to no involvement in their child's education due to circumstances beyond their control. By documenting the impact of Family School, a parent involvement program, on parents', translators' and teachers' attitudes towards parent participation in elementary school, the study identifies factors that can improve the parental involvement of limited English proficient parents. Questionnaires, interviews, and observations were used to identify the factors that both encourage and discourage parent involvement, as well as to portray the impact of a parent involvement program on participants' attitudes. The results revealed that the language barrier and lack of teacher communication are the primary factors that discourage parent involvement, while student success and successful teacher communication are the main factors that encourage parent involvement. Family School had a positive impact on the majority of its participants, changing the ways in which each group viewed the importance of parent involvement. When parent involvement programs create opportunities for parent education and involvement with their child's education, and are sensitive to the needs of non-native English speaking parents, the parents will benefit significantly from these endeavors.

Book Synopsis Parents And Teachers by : Carol Vincent
Download or read book Parents And Teachers written by Carol Vincent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the factors that shape and influence home-school relations. At its heart is an analysis of parent-teacher relationships in an inner city borough, drawn from case studies of five primary schools and a parents' centre. Interviews with parents are revealing windows into parents' views on a range of issues, including curriculum, discipline and parents' relationships with their children's teachers.; The author also considers teachers' perspectives on these matters, and explores the influence of social class, ethnicity and gender on parent-teacher interactions. While presenting these issues within a consideration of broader themes such as citizenship, community, power and participation, the book discusses the reasons why initiatives designed to improve home- school relations appear to result in such limited change.

Download or read book Parents' and Teachers' Attitudes Toward Parent Involvement written by Shelley Barrett-Catton and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To study the question "What are parents' and teachers' attitudes toward parent involvement?" nine parents and seven teachers from one school were interviewed for a qualitative study. A wide variety of philosophies of parent involvement were found. The parents, as a whole, considered themselves important influences in their children's education and wanted more communication from the school. The teachers had varying needs for parent involvement. While all of the teachers wanted the support from the parents at home, some wanted parents involved in the classroom. One implication of this study is that in order to have a positive relationship with parents, educators need to have an understanding of the wide spectrum of possibilities for and definitions of parent involvement.

Book Synopsis A Survey of the Attitudes, Perceptions, and Practices of Early Care and Education Staff Regarding Parent Involvement by : Stacey Mellinger
Download or read book A Survey of the Attitudes, Perceptions, and Practices of Early Care and Education Staff Regarding Parent Involvement written by Stacey Mellinger and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the parent involvement attitudes and practices of early care and education teachers. A sample of 171 early care and education teachers rated the degree to which they agreed or disagreed with 25 statements regarding general attitudes of parent involvement, as well as family and teacher and/or center obligations in creating family-school partnerships. Teachers were also asked to indicate the frequency in which they engaged in 9 specified activities that could be used to engage families in their young child's education. The surveyed teachers were from 31 early care and education centers that were participants in a quality improvement initiative designed to improve the school readiness of the children they serve. Fifteen of the 31 centers received additional services from a family engagement specialist, who worked to increase parent involvement at the centers and to strengthen family-school partnerships. Results indicated that, overall, the teachers reported positive views about parent involvement and the families they served. They recognized the benefits of family-school partnerships for young children. The teachers reported feeling that it was an important part of their job to involve all families and that all families had strengths and abilities that could be used to help their children get ready for kindergarten. Modest differences were found in the responses between teachers who had received assistance from family engagement specialists and those who had not, with teachers who were part of the intervention indicating stronger support from their directors and center and being more likely to talk to families about concerns. All of the teachers surveyed reported using a wide variety of strategies to engage families, with teachers in the intervention group using parent workshops and newsletters more often that the non-intervention group. Slight but significant differences were found on some of the survey questions related to teacher characteristics, such as hours worked at the center per week and age of children taught. With increased emphasis being placed on quality improvement in early care and education, it is important to know how those being asked to implement possibly new and demanding changes in practice feel about and respond to what is being asked of them. Efforts to support them should be effective and responsive to their current views and practices.
Book Synopsis Families and Schools in a Pluralistic Society by : Nancy Feyl Chavkin

This book was released on 1993-02-02 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research identifies increased parent involvement in education as a promising method to bolster student achievement. Statistics show that while many traditional white, middle class families have found ways to be involved with their children's schooling, our nation now needs to find ways to include more minority parents in their children's education. Most educators and parents would agree that minority parent involvement in education is essential; the mechanics of developing sensitive, realistic, and workable home-school relationships are more elusive. It requires a concerted effort by all involved to understand more about the complex parent-school relationship and to develop specific plans to help families. This comprehensive volume features substantial material from the nation's most renowned research projects on parent involvement—Stanford University's Center for the Study of Families, Children and Youth, the Johns Hopkins University's Center for Research on Elementary and Middle Schools, the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, and the National Catholic Education Association. In addition to a section on research, the book includes a section on practice that presents research-tested strategies on working with minority parents (Asian, American Indian, Hispanic, African American, and other minority groups). The book concludes with a section on future challenges that educators must confront and appendices on promising national programs and helpful resource materials.
Book Synopsis Parent and Community Involvement in Education by : Barry Rutherford
Download or read book Parent and Community Involvement in Education written by Barry Rutherford and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 1997 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on parent, family, and community involvement in middle-grade education. It addressed three reform themes in the area of middle-grade school/family and community partnerships: (1) What are the larger and local environments within which parent, family, and community involvement operate? How do these contextual factors influence those programs? (2) What are the roles that parents, families, and community and business members assume in the education of their children? How are those roles facilitated? What key elements are specific to these areas? and (3) What are the effects of promising programs on parents, students, schools, and the community? How are these effects assessed or determined? Findings show that challenges can create opportunities for family involvement; strong relationships form the core of family and community involvement; responsibilities and decision making need to be shared among all participants; sustained family and community involvement depends on active advocacy by leaders; and active partnerships require a system of support to sustain them. Implications for policymakers include a focus on success for all students as the core of policy for education reform, whereby school, family, and community partnerships are supported. Appendix A contains references, and Appendix B contains a bibliography of current products. (RT)
