Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to discover teachers' attitudes and perceptions about multicultural education and the resources they had to support a multicultural curriculum. Teachers from a Southern California elementary school were surveyed. This community is experiencing a high volume of population growth due to many new, affordable track homes and a school system with an excellent reputation. The demographics are changing from primarily whites to including many people from different cultures. The survey was handed to the teachers at a staff meeting and contained a total of 11 questions. The teachers completed the surveys and returned them immediately. Their responses were then cross tabulated using a statistical program. Overall, the teachers had positive feelings about including multicultural education in their curriculum. Newer teachers had the strongest feelings about incorporating multicultural education. Most teachers felt the highest level of support from their peers. Some teachers admitted that they did not know the various cultures of their students. Finally, teachers expressed a need for integrated multicultural lessons for their classrooms. Keywords: multicultural education, culture, curriculum, teachers, attitudes

Book excerpt: This book reports an ethnographic study of thirty teachers from eighteen schools who participated in a staff development programme in multicultural education. The study examines how multicultural education was actually presented to teachers, and areas in which their classroom teaching and perception of students changed over the two-year period. Although most of the teachers reported learning a good deal, changes in their teaching and their discussions of teaching were fairly limited. After reporting the data, the book examines why changes were limited, analyzing three areas: the nature of staff development and how multicultural education was packaged; the structure of schools as institutions; and the identities and life experiences of teachers as White women, often from working class backgrounds.

Placing race, racism, antiracism, and democracy at the center of his analyses and recommendation, this volume provides: - Concrete structural suggestions for including transformative multicultural education in higher education and K-12 in-service programs. -A multicultural critique of new NCATE accreditation standards for teacher education programs that offers reconceptualized assessment procedures. -The historical roots of transformative multicultural education that incorporates issues of white privilege and racialized color blindness, anti-racist pedagogy, racial identity among teachers, and critical race theory. - A discussion of globalization that emphasizes its contemporary economic effects on social and educatonal inequities.

Book excerpt: This study indicated that the focus group format provided a safe place for the teachers to discuss their feelings about sensitive topics related to race and class. In my findings, it was evident that discussing sensitive topics about multicultural education in a small group format was helpful and could be a helpful tool for making positive changes with multicultural education in the future. My study reiterated that more multicultural-based training is necessary for practicing teachers.

Book excerpt: As America's public schools become more diverse, the achievement gap between white students and students of color persists. These gaps are even more apparent in urban areas that serve large numbers of poor students of color. Because the population of aspiring teachers is increasingly white and middle class, theorists and teacher trainers often recommend multicultural education as a solution to working successfully in these schools.

Book excerpt: Freedom's Plow is the first volume designed to provide teachers and teachers-in-training with the practical resources they need to make their teaching practice and classrooms more multicultural. Parts II and III present the voices and experiences of teachers from first grade to college level who are actually engaged in multicultural teaching efforts. The contributors examine what redefining their practice as multicultural has meant for their work in terms of content, pedagogy, power and indeed their own attitudes and values. The volume concludes by focusing on the power arrangements, perspectives and personnel policies needed if schools are to emerge as truly multicultural, multiethnic democracies.
