Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of the West Indies Distance Teaching Experiment (UWIDITE) is an example of a conventional institution with a distance teaching department. The UWI is one of two regional universities serving a region covering 17 countries. Some countries are fairly prosperous; others are suffering severe economic difficulties. All the territories are culturally diverse, but their continuous political and economic ties with Britain have left the mark of the British on their educational systems. Governments have been critical of UWI's failure to respond to needs of the various territories. UWIDITE has enabled UWI to respond to the challenge of making education accessible. The system consists of a telephone link-up among seven countries. Each UWIDITE Center has a teleconferencing room equipped with microphones, loudspeakers, slow scan television, a telewriter, a scrambler, and a microcomputer. A priority of distance teaching has been teacher training, and a program leading to a Certificate in Education has been offered since 1983. The same lecturers who teach the conventional courses teach the UWIDITE courses and develop the materials. The program has not attracted as many students as expected. Student performance is not as high as that of students in conventional programs. Hardware maintenance, material development, and student feedback need to be improved. (13 references) (YLB)

Book excerpt: This book reviews current education and skills training options in the Eastern Caribbean and asks whether the prevailing education policies adequately prepare youth for the global economy. It provides in-depth analysis and relevant international cutting-edge practices to guide policymakers, educators and private sector leaders in fostering a creative, productive and well-paid workforce. Specifically, it makes the case for why the OECS education and training systems need to be more responsive to changing labor market demands in the region, and discusses how this could be achieved, taking into c.

This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive study of the development of education in the West Indies between 1492 and 1854 examines the shifts which occurred within the nature of the education programs provided for the masses. Believing existing theories of educational change are too limiting, Bacchus has blended detailed analysis of such important factors as the changing role of the state, the conflicting educational objectives among the “dominant” groups, and their differences with the missionary societies providing popular education to better understand how these changes came about. He attributes greater importance to the role of the masses, who increasingly asserted their views about the type of education they wanted for their children. The book demonstrates how instructional programs developed in the West Indies not as the result of a rational curriculum development process but, rather, through a series of compromises made to accommodate the views of various influential groups. Education and curriculum evolved by way of a show, yet constant, changing dialectical process. Such an insightful work will arouse the interest of scholars and students of educational development, particularly those studying the West Indies.
