Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify middle school teachers' perceptions of behaviors associated with highly engaged parents along with their perceptions of effective strategies to improve parent engagement. Thirty-six teachers from two southeastern school districts in Pennsylvania participated in an online survey containing 20 Likert-scale and four open-ended questions. Five teachers also volunteered to participate in the interview process. The first research question examined middle school teachers' perceptions of behaviors of highly engaged parents. Participants associated highly engaged parents with traditional forms of parent engagement. They included communicating with the school, providing appropriate levels of parenting, participating in the school, and supporting their child at home. Participants did not identify non-traditional forms of parent engagement, such as involvement in the decision-making process and community collaboration. as behaviors associated with highlv engaged parents. The second research question identified middle school teachers' perceptions of effective strategies to improve levels of parent engagement. Participants believed that they had the ability to influence a parent's level of engagement. They also noted that professional development in targeted areas could assist in their ability to improve parent engagement. Identified areas for training included relationship building, implicit bias, community resources, and equity. Lastly, participants also believed that parents should have a limited role in the decision-making process. They indicated that parents can be involved in committees and groups, but the final decision-making should be left to the school.

However, digital technology has the potential to improve parent engagement and overcome some of the barriers that can hinder effective engagement. ☐ Using a mixed-method approach, an online survey, and a semistructured interview, this Executive Position Paper (EEP) explores the perceptions of K-12 Delaware teachers regarding their experience and strategies in improving parent engagement. Findings revealed that teachers believed in the importance of parent engagement and communication, the second type of Epstein's (1995) parent involvement. These data revealed that communication served as the basis for the other types of involvement: parenting, volunteering, learning at home, decision-making, and collaborating with the community. Participants believed in the potential benefits of technology to keep parents engaged in their children's education, especially mobile applications increasingly used to engage parents in many aspects of their children's learning. Social constructivism, Epstein's Six Types of Parent Involvement (1995), and Epstein's Overlapping Spheres of Influence (1995) served as a conceptual framework.

But in a potentially constructive development, researchers have found that parental involvement is linked to positive attitudes toward education, behavioral performance, and better academic achievement to support the success of a child’s learning in the classroom. Although the research on parental involvement is abundant in the literature, there may be too little attention paid to the perception of teachers toward parental involvement. The purpose of this quantitative study is to analyze the perceptions of teachers based on parental involvement activities guided by Epstein’s Six Typologies of Parental Involvement: (a) teacher perceptions of parents and barriers to parental involvement, (b) communication, (c) teacher expectations for parental involvement programs; (d) building parent/teacher partnerships; and (e) resolutions and resources to improve parental involvement in schools. A 20 item close-ended questionnaire revealed how teachers' perceptions influence parental involvement in middle and high schools. The results of the study add to the validity of Epstein’s’ Six Typologies of parental involvement indicating that parental involvement initiatives and programs need to be more purposeful when it comes to communication and parent/teacher partnerships. By creating awareness in schools and school programs, parents and teachers can further build upon strong relationships that lead to a declared cohesive partnership to further increase student participation at home and in school; ultimately enhancing parental involvement as a significant component in a child’s education.

Book excerpt: The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium require teacher education programs to develop assessments to document and measure teacher candidates’ dispositions. Teacher candidates’ dispositions and dispositions on future action related to parent and family engagement are significant given the salient role that K-12 parents have on overall student success. Yet today’s dearth of research hinders authentic practices on examining teacher candidates’ dispositions toward parent and family engagement, ways to strengthen such dispositions, and how such dispositions in action interact with knowledge, skills, and efficacy on building parent-teacher partnerships. This qualitative single-case study examined six junior-level teacher candidates’ self-awareness across intellectual, cultural, and moral dispositions to identify gaps experienced amid ability and future action to engage parents in supporting their children’s education. Data collection was triangulated through journal analysis via photo elicitation, semi-structured interviews, and a focus group. Consistent with the literature, participants reported limited curricular content and field experiences on parent engagement had impacted their intellectual dispositions and dispositions on future action to build parent-teacher partnerships. Reports also indicated that teacher candidates’ cultural backgrounds and childhood schooling experiences had affected their patterns of thinking on K-12 parent engagement and their perceptions as to future actionable practice to build parent-teacher partnerships. One conclusion drawn from this study theorized that ambiguity existed in systems of support related to developing candidates’ efficacy on parent-teacher partnerships. This included mixed-messages in the form of dispositional variations among education faculty and cooperating teachers in field placements. Study outcomes framed potential assessment measures on dispositions in general and ways to operationalize continuous improvement related to teacher education curriculum, field experiences, and instructional pedagogy to strengthen teacher candidates’ preparation and efficacy to build successful parent-teacher partnerships.

Book excerpt: A long debate in education has been the involvement of parents and whether their engagement improves student achievement. This qualitative research study sought to investigate the perceptions of teachers and administrators on the factors that affect parental engagement in school-sponsored workshops and examined effective strategies to foster parental engagement in those workshops. Sixteen teachers and seven administrators of a school district in southeastern Pennsylvanian volunteered for the study because of their influence on relationships with families and how those relationships encourage parental engagement in schools. Qualitative data on parental engagement in school-sponsored workshops emerged through an analysis of survey results and interviews with teachers and administrators. The findings of the research study suggested multiple components of a successful parental engagement model for school districts. Participants recognized that parent engagement in a child's education is essential but the barriers that impede parental engagement must be addressed to promote engagement in school-sponsored parent workshops. Schools need to individually invite families to workshops and the buildings should have a welcoming, friendly environment with the basic necessities of meals, childcare, transportation, and interpreters provided to the families. Furthermore, schools should utilize community resources to promote parental engagement. Finally, parent workshops need to include activities that actively engage parents with their child to enhance parental engagement in workshops. Literature implies these key components of a parental engagement model will improve the performance of students whose parents are engaged in their education, which ultimately, will impact their overall academic achievement.

Research has also shown that many barriers exist for effective parent engagement activities in rural school settings, including communication (Halsey, 2005), life contexts (Eidahl, 2013), and school environments (Englund, Luckner, Whaley, & Egeland, 2004). Understanding the differences in perceptions of effective parent engagement activities will identify a comprehensive understanding of what types of parent engagement opportunities promote a collaborative and supportive relationship between home and school. Currently, there is a gap in research studies in rural school settings that examine parent engagement activities. This qualitative research study examined the differences in perceptions of effective parent engagement activities between disparate groups of parents, school administrators, and teachers. Data for this study was collected through surveys, program evaluations, interviews, and focus groups. Analyses of the data identified similarities and differences in the characteristics of effective parent engagement activities as perceived by school administrators, teachers, and parents. Five key findings that were identified include: (a) smallness of a rural school district is seen as a strength and challenge for effective parent engagement activities, (b) developing personal connections within a rural community, (c) opening lines of communication, (d) developing parent-to-parent relationships and (e) gaining the perspective from inactive parents. These findings and recommendations can be used to develop school programs that better support parent involvement in educational programs and to strengthen the community and education of students.
