The purpose of the current study was to determine the extent to which teachers--perceptions of their students--in other words, the knowledge that they have about their students' impacts the disciplinary measures they take to address behavior. The currentstudy followed the transformative paradigm and utilized a qualitative, open-ended surveyto collect data. Eleven pre-K-12 teachers from Midwestern school districts were recruitedthrough the use of informants. Participants reported more problem behaviors from malestudents and those in special education settings. They reported the use of alternativediscipline measures more often than exclusionary discipline measures. Finally, participants reported that they consider mitigating factors when determining appropriateconsequences for students. The findings from this study can inform teacher trainingprograms and strategies to combat problem behavior in schools.

Book excerpt: Black students, for decades, have been more likely to be suspended than White peers despite evidence suggesting they are more likely to misbehave (DeMatthews, Carey, Olivarez, & Saeedi, 2017). Regardless of teachers implementing an evidence-based intervention for discipline in urban schools, minority students continue to be disproportionately identified in the discipline process. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study is to explore how teachers in urban settings perceive racial disproportionality and its effects on students. This study unpacked how teachers' perceptions of students influence their decisions within the discipline process and the classroom. For this particular study, the questions posed involved what types of student behaviors do teachers find difficult to manage, the influence of the implementation of School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, teachers' perspectives about discipline, and disproportionality among Black males. Critical race theory was used as a lens and gave the research a framework to delve into the realities of race as it presents itself in disciplinary actions. The methods used in this study include semi-structured interviews and observations. The school selected is a K-8 elementary school in a large urban district with a high population of Black males implementing positive behavior supports. The target population includes the principal, assistant principal, and six teachers who volunteered for the study. Findings inform recommendations that may address these disproportionate concerns raised in the study, which will assist leaders in seeking alternatives to current discipline practices.

This question was addressed through the perspective of African American male students in a school district in northeast Ohio. The topic and research question led to literature research topics such as, the discipline gap, zero tolerance policies, school to prison pipeline, and restorative justice. The study sought to address the gap in the literature with obtaining a student voice on the topics. Several themes emerged from the research. The themes are referrals and removals, equal treatment, and background and reputation. All participants agreed that they had been removed from a classroom by a classroom teacher for one reason or another. The participants also agreed that they believed that not all students in schools are treated equally. Along with this the participants believed that their background and reputation played a key role in the way they were disciplined compared to other students. Some participants even felt that situations that may have transpired as early as elementary and middle school have followed them to high school and still affect them negatively. The research led to implications for teachers, administrators, and students in connection to student discipline practices.

Over the last twenty years, schools have implemented school-wide intervention models to address the overuse of exclusionary discipline. Despite this movement, discipline disproportionality still exists, and contributes to persistent educational inequities for African American students. Much of the research on this topic has been quantitative and focused on the experience of African American males. This study diverges from that tradition by using a participatory ethnographic method to gather qualitative data from the individuals who are most affected by disproportionate discipline practices, African American students and teachers. Data was collected via in-depth interviews with nine African American female high school students, seven long-term teachers who identified as White (four females and three males), and one African American female administrator. The study was conducted at a public high school experiencing discipline disproportionality within the context of a school-wide intervention model. The results show the complexity of how discipline disproportionality is maintained within a racialized school context. A primary finding was that teachers and students see the student-teacher relationship as a critical factor in the maintenance of unfair discipline practices. Teachers also cite systemic and structural factors as key contributors to discipline issues in the school. Further, teachers reported feeling a lack of support from administrators, which contributed to teachers' low levels of self-efficacy in the face of discipline practices at their school. Finally, both the students and the teachers perceived the school-wide intervention model (PBIS) as not being fully realized in their school. Using critical race theory and social psychology perspectives, the author argues that the complexities of discipline disparities can be better understood by analyzing the transactional nature of student-teacher interactions within the context of the racial and power dynamics inherent in the institution of schools. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examined teachers' perceptions of school climate when using the Love and Logic discipline approach. Forty-nine participants from three elementary schools completed the School Discipline Climate Survey to assess school climate while using the Love and Logic discipline approach. Seven selected participants were interviewed to support perceptual data from the survey. A comparison was then made to determine if any relationship existed between the School Discipline Climate Survey results and the interview responses. Discipline data provided additional information for two of the three participating schools, with one school providing both pre-and post-implementation data. Responses from participants were tabulated and analyzed. According to this study, discipline offenses decreased annually in schools using the Love and Logic discipline approach with the largest impact being identified after the fifth year of implementation. Both survey and interview data suggested that consistent use of the principles of Love and Logic was an effective discipline approach in school settings. As evidenced by the fact that all school climate survey categories scored 70% or better, with the one exception of the teacher training category only scoring 46%, participants suggested that the Love and Logic discipline approach resulted in a positive school climate.

Book excerpt: School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) is a school disciplinary framework seen as an effective tool to replace school disciplinary practices that contribute to the school to prison pipeline (STPP). While evidence suggests that SWPBIS can help improve school discipline and lower suspension/expulsion rates, it has not been shown to consistently decrease racial disciplinary disparities. This study thematically analyzed semi-structured interviews of educational staff at one high school at the outset of SWPBIS implementation to understand their perceptions of school discipline and the potential for SWPBIS to address root causes of racial disciplinary disproportionality. Using a critical race theory analytical lens to center issues of race and racism, the findings revealed a school that is deeply structured in Whiteness. Participants described the school as "two schools in one"--One that is largely White, affluent, and high-achieving and another that is predominantly Black, economically disadvantaged, and achieving at lower levels. Educators were open to key elements of SWPBIS, such as positive discipline and school-wide consistency in disciplinary practices. And while many participants identified systemic barriers to achieving equity, they simultaneously relied on discursive strategies that upheld Whiteness. These findings suggest that SWPBIS has the potential to be an alternative to punitive school discipline, but faces multiple barriers in addressing disciplinary disproportionality. The segregated and stratified school structure raises questions about whom SWPBIS is for and who will bear the burden of implementation.
