Book Synopsis A Grammar of Rapa Nui by : Paulus Kieviet
Download or read book A Grammar of Rapa Nui written by Paulus Kieviet and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive description of the grammar of Rapa Nui, the Polynesian language spoken on Easter Island. After an introductory chapter, the grammar deals with phonology, word classes, the noun phrase, possession, the verb phrase, verbal and nonverbal clauses, mood and negation, and clause combinations. The phonology of Rapa Nui reveals certain issues of typological interest, such as the existence of strict conditions on the phonological shape of words, word-final devoicing, and reduplication patterns motivated by metrical constraints. For Polynesian languages, the distinction between nouns and verbs in the lexicon has often been denied; in this grammar it is argued that this distinction is needed for Rapa Nui. Rapa Nui has sometimes been characterised as an ergative language; this grammar shows that it is unambiguously accusative. Subject and object marking depend on an interplay of syntactic, semantic and pragmatic factors. Other distinctive features of the language include the existence of a ‘neutral’ aspect marker, a serial verb construction, the emergence of copula verbs, a possessive-relative construction, and a tendency to maximise the use of the nominal domain. Rapa Nui’s relationship to the other Polynesian languages is a recurring theme in this grammar; the relationship to Tahitian (which has profoundly influenced Rapa Nui) especially deserves attention. The grammar is supplemented with a number of interlinear texts, two maps and a subject index.

Download or read book Collapse written by Jared Diamond and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Guns, Germs and Steel, Jared Diamond's Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Survive is a visionary study of the mysterious downfall of past civilizations. Now in a revised edition with a new afterword, Jared Diamond's Collapse uncovers the secret behind why some societies flourish, while others founder - and what this means for our future. What happened to the people who made the forlorn long-abandoned statues of Easter Island? What happened to the architects of the crumbling Maya pyramids? Will we go the same way, our skyscrapers one day standing derelict and overgrown like the temples at Angkor Wat? Bringing together new evidence from a startling range of sources and piecing together the myriad influences, from climate to culture, that make societies self-destruct, Jared Diamond's Collapse also shows how - unlike our ancestors - we can benefit from our knowledge of the past and learn to be survivors. 'A grand sweep from a master storyteller of the human race' - Daily Mail 'Riveting, superb, terrifying' - Observer 'Gripping ... the book fulfils its huge ambition, and Diamond is the only man who could have written it' - Economis 'This book shines like all Diamond's work' - Sunday Times

Download or read book Journeys II written by Archie Stanley and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2016-12-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sequel to his first book, Archie Stanley’s Journeys II offers alternative family migrations that parallel the DNA-based migrations described in Journeys. These alternative migrations branch off from the main family migration pathway from Africa to North America, and could account for many relatively recent archeological discoveries that seem to be in unexpected places, given the extremely accurate DNA Traces documented in the Genome Project of the National Geographic Magazine of human migrations. Crisscrossing the earth, these alternative migrations travelled varied directions and some met in unexpected and remote places. Fictional family members intermingled and exchanged stories of experiences with fictional natives over virtually the entire globe. Survival was the paramount objective across many generations of family members as they journeyed over millennia to faraway corners of our planet. Stories and discussions among the characters in Journeys II offer new theories of gravity, earth magnetic and electro forces, structured space energy grid, dating of ancient monuments, purpose of the Great Pyramid, age of the Great Sphinx, and possible sources and reasons for evidence that exists before our eyes all across the world. Based upon this worldwide evidence an exciting alternative pre-ancient history scenario is offered whose cultures exerted global influence and was based on two continents that no longer exist; rather, they were submerged 12,500 years ago in the areas of today’s two major oceans, the Atlantic and Pacific. These massive changes in our planet earth, were a result of incredible cosmic induced forces 12,500 years ago that virtually peppered our planet with near light speed particles and large projectiles that collided with or nearly collided with earth. The result was a near complete melting of the massive icecap that covered most of the northern hemisphere with subsequent huge tidal waves and massive flooding of continents, extinction of most of the large species of animals all across the earth, and near complete destruction of earth’s landscape, and complete destruction and submergence of the two former Atlantic and Pacific continents described in the previous paragraph. Brought to life pictorially by Google Earth maps, sketches, and custom full color illustrations, the stories take the reader’s emotions on several wild journeys that provoke deep thought on how evidence, including massive monuments, myths, chants, stories, carvings, religions, and unexplained damage of the earth and huge deposits of the bones of extinct animals all over the world came to be. It is recent anomalous archeologic discoveries all across the earth that drive the need for rewriting the history of the earth. The stories and ideas presented in Journeys II are in part intended to assist in bringing worldwide evidence to the reader’s attention and encourage new ideas of who created the evidence and what the evidence means.
