Book excerpt: A field scale demonstration of composting explosives contaminated sediments was conducted at the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant (LAAP) composting, as used at LAAP, is a treatment process in which organic chemical contaminated soils or sediments are mixed with organic materials such as manure to enhance the role of microbial metabolism in degrading and stabilizing soil/ sediment contaminants. Lagoon sediments contaminated with TNT, HMX, RDX, and tetryl were mixed with manure, straw, hay, live-stock feed, and fertilizer and composted for 153 days in static piles. Negative pressure aeration was used to maintain aerobiosis and remove excess heat, The initial total explosives concentration in compost was approximately 17,000 mg/Kg (1.7 wt%). After 153 days of composting in a mesophilic (35C) and a thermophilic (55C) compost pile, the concentration of solvent-extractable total explosives in compost was reduced to 376 and 74 mg/Kg, respectively. Mean percent reductions for TNT, RDX, and HMX in the mesophilic pile were 99.6, 94.8 and 86.9 wt%, respectively. Corresponding values for the thermophilic piles were 99.9, 99.1, and 96.5 wt%. Known biotransformation products of TNT (diamino-nitrotoluenes and amino- dinitrotoluenes) were detected in the initial compost, increased in concentration during the first 4 weeks of composting, and decreased to low mg/Kg levels thereafter. Keywords: Composting; Explosives; TNT; RDX; HMX; Tetryl; Biorestoration; Bioreclamation; Sediment; Pink water; Biotransformation. (MGM).

Book excerpt: A field-scale demonstration of composting propellants-contaminated sediment was conducted at the Badger Army Ammunition Plant (BAAP). Composting, as used at BAAP, is a treatment process in which organic-chemical contaminated soils or sediments are mixed with organic materials such as manure to enhance the role of microbial metabolism in degrading and stabilizing soil/sediment contaminants. Sediments contaminated with the propellant nitrocellulose (NC) were mixed with manure, alfalfa, livestock feed, and wood chips and composted in four static piles. Negative pressure aeration was used to maintain aerobiosis and remove excess heat. Experimental variables investigated during the study were temperature (mesophilic, 35 C vs. thermophilic, 55 C), sediment loading (19 to 32 weight percent), and NC loading. Small aliquots of compost (approximately 400 cu cm) were spiked with pure NC, placed in porous nylon bags and buried in compost piles. These bagged compost samples were used to determine if high levels of NC could be successfully composted. Thermophilic temperatures resulted in the highest percent reduction in NC concentration.

Book excerpt: The United States Army operates explosives manufacturing plants to produce various forms of explosives used in military ordnance. Manufacturing activities at such plants result in the production of organic wastewaters that contain both explosive residues and other organic chemicals. Several treatment technologies have been developed to treat these wastewaters for final discharge. Past waste handling practices at explosives manufacturing plants commonly included the use of the unlined lagoons or pits for containing process wastewaters. As a result of these past practices, some explosives residues may leach through the soil and contaminated groundwater. Therefore, the treatment of contaminated groundwater may be required.

Book excerpt: Explosives-contaminated (primary TNT, RDX, and HMX) sediments composted under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions at the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant were subjected to regulatory leaching (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure and Synthetic Precipitation Leach Test) and organic solvent extraction followed by chemical characterization and toxicity tests. Chemical characterization included EPA Contract Laboratory Program Target compound list volatile and semivolatile organics, PCBs, pesticides, metals, and also explosive compounds and TNT metabolites. The toxicity testing utilized (Ceriodaphnia dubia, fathead minnow larvae, and the Ames test, Regulatory compounds were not detected at significant concentrations in the leachates or extracts and the main constituents found were TNT, HMX, RDX, and two monoamino dinitrotoluenes at low to sub-ppm levels. Low toxicity was detected in the aqueous leachates, with the leachate from the mesophilic compost being more toxic. Particles recovered from the leachates had only low extractable toxicity. Considerably higher toxicity was found in the organic solvent extracts, because of lesser dilution than the regulatory leachates. Comparison of toxicity calculated per g of compost extracted or leached did not reveal any substantial toxicity in the compost which was not liberated by the regulatory leaching procedure, but the high dilutions (100g compost per 2L of leachate) considerably reduced the sensitivity of the Ames test unless the leachates were concentrated 100-fold. Book excerpt: During the past five years increased awareness of environmental contamination by nitroaromatic compounds has led to a dramatic increase in research on their biodegradation. The resulting discoveries have markedly extended our understanding of degradation mecha nisms and pathways in bacteria and fungi. Futhermore, this new basic knowledge promises the development of field applications of biodegradation systems for nitroaromatic com pounds. In May of 1994, an International Symposium on the Biodegradation of Nitro aromatic Compounds was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. This symposium brought together the scientists at the frontiers of research into the biodegradation of nitro aromatic compounds. The invited speakers were asked to review their area of expertise and write a critical, comprehensive synthesis of their work and related work by others. This book is the result of their efforts. The emphasis of the reviews is on basic research in biodegradation and biotransfor mation. Therefore, the reactions of nitroaromatic compounds in plants, animals, bacteria, fungi, soil, and even nonbiological systems are considered. The goal of the work is to provide the reader with an appreciation of the tremendous range of possibilities for metabolism of aromatic nitro compounds and the experimental approaches used to understand them. This volume should be of interest to biochemists, microbiologists, engineers, toxicologists, and anyone interested in the behavior of synthetic chemicals in the environment or in living systems. Furthermore, a variety of commercial applications can be envisioned for some of the reactions described here.

Yet today lethal toxins still permeate our environment, causing widespread illness and even death. Toxic Loopholes investigates these laws, and the agency charged with their enforcement, to explain why they have failed to arrest the nation's rising environmental crime wave and clean up the country's land, air and water. This book illustrates how weak laws, legal loopholes and regulatory negligence harm everyday people struggling to clean up their communities. It demonstrates that our current system of environmental protection pacifies the public with a false sense of security, dampens environmental activism, and erects legal barricades and bureaucratic barriers to shield powerful polluters from the wrath of their victims. After examining the corrosive economic and political forces undermining environmental law making and enforcement, the final chapters assess the potential for real improvement and the possibility of building cooperative international agreements to confront the rising tide of ecological perils threatening the entire planet.
