Download or read book Third World in the First written by Elspeth Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European colonisation has marginalised the `first peoples' in industrialised countries such as Australia and Canada. In remote regions, still the homes of large Aboriginal, Indian and Inuit populations, this legacy remains strong. Modernisation - the `boom and bust' model of state and private development - and the partial and biased assistance provided by the state have eroded many communities through their disregard for socio-economic structures and the beliefs which underpin them. Third World in the First explores the past, present and future of these peoples, their treatment by the `West' and the alternative strategies of development which might be available to them.

Book Synopsis From Wooden Ploughs To Welfare by : Helen Buckley
Download or read book From Wooden Ploughs To Welfare written by Helen Buckley and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1992-04-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Wooden Ploughs to Welfare examines the reserve system imposed by the Canadian government in the 1870s - a system, rooted in theories of racial difference, that stifled initiative, opportunity, and self-esteem. The 1960s saw the collapse of the reserve economy, until then sustained by casual wage work or trapping. The government's answer was a welfare program which marked a new era of deeper dependency. Helen Buckley argues that later government programs have proven equally discouraging: schooling has improved but drop-out rates remain high, economic development remains a low priority, and large sums are spent on manpower courses that seldom lead to jobs. The many who sought a better life by moving to the city received no government assistance at all. Buckley argues that self-government is the only solution to the economic isolation and underdevelopment of native Canadians. She focuses on Status Indians in the Prairie provinces, but her analysis and conclusions are applicable to Status Indians in other regions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropologist Wayne Warry argues that self-government can be realized only when individuals are secure in their cultural identity and can contribute to the transformation of their communities. Warry's notion of community healing involves efforts to rebuild the human foundations for self-governing Aboriginal societies. He uses case studies to illustrate the processes that are essential to self-government.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book explores the foundations and characteristics of public policy discourse on Aboriginal affairs in Canada between publication of the two volumes of H.B. Hawthorn's Survey of the Contemporary Indians of Canada (the Hawthorn report) in 1966 and 1967 and establishment of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples in 1991.Its primary sources are 222 documents prepared by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organizations and governments over this period. Our focus in analyzing these documents was to trace the evolution of policy discussions and debates in four key areas: lands and resources, governance, criminal justice, and education. The analysis builds on our conceptualization of public policy discourse as involving three basic questions: who was involved in policy discussions; how did policy discussions occur; and what was said about key issues in the domain of Aboriginal affairs? In dealing with these questions, we look at the various and sometimes competing public policy paradigms embraced by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal participants in the discussions. Our analysis also builds on our approach to historical documents, namely, that it is important to examine what one can learn from the past, as well as to attempt to understand the past in the context of dominant ideas and events of the period itself"--Executive summary, p. xi.

The analysis considers three basic questions: who was involved in policy discussions; how did policy discussions occur; and what was said about key issues in the domain of Aboriginal affairs. Building on the analysis, the book examines the documentary evidence in light of the role of international influences, the dominant preoccupations of Aboriginal peoples and Canadian governments in the evolution of their relationship, and the extent to which the relationship has been accompanied by clarity of Canadian government policy and genuine consultation.
