Between 2006 and 2016, India made progress in reducing stunting among children below five years; the progress, however, has not been uniform across all its states (Menon et al. 2018). There are interstate differences in stunting reduction despite a common national policy framework for nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programs. Given the paucity of insights on what factors drive successful change in nutritional outcomes such as stunting at the state level in India, we conducted studies in the four states of Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu. In this report, we document the story of change in Tamil Nadu, which is one of the exemplary states in India. With a long history of nutrition and health reforms, it stands out as a leader in social development. We aimed to update prior work on Tamil Nadu to assess more recent changes in nutritional outcomes, determinants, and coverage of interventions. Our key goals were to: 1) examine changes in child stunting, known determinants of stunting and key health and nutrition interventions between 1992 and 2016; 2) assess the contribution of diverse determinants and intervention coverage changes to the changes in stunting between 2006 and 2016; and (3) interpret the changes in the context of policies, programs, and other changes in the state.

C)Is there any unceremonious exclusion after ceremonious inclusion made through inclu-sion oriented interventions without ensuring sustainability? This monograph seeks to probe the fact empirically. The ‘Inclusion’ of the excluded has two dimensions viz., Spatial or geographical inclusion and Human inclusion. From economic growth perspectives, the term ‘Inclusive inclusion’ requires a holistic inclusion of area qualitatively with the integrated productive connectivity infrastructure for running sustainable economic activities. This Aside, from development orientation, as a corollary to the so called inclusive inclusion demands a comprehensive human development of the people in the included habitation. In the context of nonappearance of these qualitative dimensions of inclusive inclusion, any claim, with mere numerically supported inclusion, for any inclusion oriented intervention for that matter, be it concerned with social, education, health and financial one, symbolizes only a “Mystic inclusion.” A critical analysis has been made on a slew of empirically tested evaluative findings for demystifying the hidden truth on the impact of the inclusion. As a way forward, Bharthya approach is suggested focusing on Indianization of planning system at district level and indigenization of the product and services that suit the marginalized people at the bottom level of poverty pyramid, has been made for facilitating candid inclusion from ‘Make in India’ perspectives. Towards this end, for the benefit of the research students and academic institutions, some useful hypotheses on the inclusion and poverty are presented for testing in future studies and developing new theories for filling large gap on the subject in social science.

Book excerpt: This report highlights that gender inequalities and women's subordination in India are caused by two formidable macro-structures: patriarchy and the exclusion of unpaid work from the macro-economy. Both these structures reinforce each other and negatively impact women's empowerment. Patriarchy imposes subordination on women and forces a disproportionately higher share of unpaid domestic services and unpaid care onto them. This is unfair and unjust - a violation of basic human rights. Other structures like race, religion, and caste cut across these main structures. The selected papers in this report show how patriarchy causes gender inequalities in all critical dimensions of women's life on the one hand, and how unpaid domestic services and unpaid care sustains the macro-economy and its growth on the other. The contributors discuss pathways to integrate unpaid work with the macro-economy such that the strength of patriarchy declines and at the same time gender equality is promoted. To put it differently, unless the structures are addressed by integrating unpaid work, inequalities cannot be addressed effectively. The report emphasizes that this is the only way to move to real macroeconomics. The papers have explored pathways to break these structures gradually to achieve gender equality and empower women. Though the path is challenging, it is feasible to reach the goal of pervasive gender equality.

When the family becoming small in sizes and nuclear in types we had to accept the migration of the family by keeping the elderly in their respective villages we started to lose the rich experience of the elderly. Within the elderly, those who are living in the rural areas somewhat better because they find the employment though the working hours are reduced, but the urban areas providing low scope and space for the elderly is concerned. The adaptability and adjustment problems are obvious amongst the family members to accommodate the elderly and push them towards the old age homes. Their interests, aspirations, love and affection towards the families denied very much and there are possibilities for stress in the family since most of the elderly are missing there. The advancement in the health sector the longevity has been increasing and a elderly easily may live beyond 80 and all if he or she maintains the positive health. There is a constraint also being discussed many forums about the inability of the elderly to stay in the family since adjustment is associated with the family. The theoretical models suggests that that the activity of the elderly still significant for the elderly because they can continue their contributions wherever possible. The finding ways of delivering the labor is the key for the elderly to maintain the happiness, earnings and share the economic constraints of the families. Many of the elderly who stay in the old age homes at free of costs because of they were unable to save any left out money which has been earned when at young. The activity theory insists that using the labor by the aged can keep them always young mentally though the chronological age is deciding for official purposes. The elderly living with the family is different from staying lonely since care providers are hardly visible. Many countries across the world is already has experienced with significant proportion of the elderly ranging from 20.00% to 30.00% but India is concerned currently we have nearly 9.00%. Absolute number is more in India since our population is around approximately 130 crores by 2020. The problems of the elderly are in between 60 and 70 is different from 80 and above is entirely different and each cohort has to be given proper emphasize. The centenarian issues to be dealt with the appropriate methodological dimensions and the widows too to be seen from appropriate perspectives. Both quantitative and qualitative aspects are need of the hour to analyze the elderly in India. The careful outlook has to be taken into consideration to identify the gap areas in the elderly research. The studies which have been carried out on elderly and guiding the students for getting the PhD has helped me to write this book to reach wider readership in the country and beyond.

Book excerpt: Countries that have sustained rapid growth over decades have typically had a strong public commitment to expanding education as well as to improving learning outcomes. South Asian countries have made considerable progress in expanding access to primary and secondary schooling, with countries having achieved near-universal enrollment of the primary-school-age cohort (ages 6†“11), except for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Secondary enrollment shows an upward trend as well. Beyond school, many more people have access to skilling opportunities and higher education today. Although governments have consistently pursued policies to expand access, a prominent feature of the region has been the role played by nonstate actors—private nonprofit and forprofit entities—in expanding access at every level of education. Though learning levels remain low, countries in the region have shown a strong commitment to improving learning. All countries in South Asia have taken the first step, which is to assess learning outcomes regularly. Since 2010, there has been a rapid increase in the number of large-scale student learning assessments conducted in the region. But to use the findings of these assessments to improve schooling, countries must build their capacity to design assessments and analyze and use findings to inform policy.
