Book Synopsis Great Little Trains of Wales by : John Bailey
Download or read book Great Little Trains of Wales written by John Bailey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Little Trains of Wales are a very special way of seeing some of the best scenery in the British Isles. All are narrow gauge steam railways and some have a history spanning well over 100 years. All of them have in common the charm of old-time steam trains with plenty of polished paintwork and brass. Built in a time less hasty than our own, most originally served to carry Welsh slate from the quarries to the sea. However, no two are the same and they all offer a unique experience of a bygone era. The special attraction of narrow gauge railways lies in their modest size compared with the main line ones and their leisurely speed gives time to take in some of the splendid scenery. Lavishly Illustrated in the style of the rail travel posters of the mid 1900s and with all embracing text, the book allows the reader to savour the hidden gems of the Great Little Trains of Wales. It was lovely to be asked to write the foreword to John Bailey's latest book and what a perfect travelling companion it is. It can be used as a guide to the railways as you travel or simply as a way of learning more about this beautiful eclectic mix of railways. The Great Little Trains of Wales exist for people to enjoy and this book will certainly further enhance people's experience of them. Enjoy the read. Chris Price Chairman of the Great Little Trains of Wales. May 2015
Book Synopsis The Corris Railway by : Peter Johnson
Download or read book The Corris Railway written by Peter Johnson and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-10-30 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensively illustrated history of this Welsh railway—and the effort to restore it. One of Wales’ oldest narrow gauge railways, the 2ft 3in gauge Corris Railway was built to carry slate from several quarries in the Dulas valley to wharves on the river Dyfi. At first forbidden to use steam locomotives or to carry passengers, it overcame these obstacles and became an essential part of the community that it served. It was also a forerunner in encouraging tourists, offering inclusive tours to nearby Talyllyn, with passengers traveling on the train and on railway-operated road services. Taken over by the Great Western Railway in 1930, the railway was closed by British Railways in 1948, apparently for good. Fortunately, the last two steam locomotives and some rolling stock was saved by the nearby Talyllyn Railway, where it played an essential role in that railway’s preservation. Eventually, the thoughts of enthusiasts turned to reviving the Corris Railway, and, after many twists and turns, the first passengers were carried on a short section in 2002. In this book, historian Peter Johnson has delved into many sources to uncover the intricacies of the railway’s origins, development, operation, and revival.

Book excerpt: 'A delightful book ... the perfect companion as you wait for the 8.10 from Hove' Observer After the Beeching cuts of the 1960s, many railways were gradually shut down. Rural communities were isolated and steam trains slowly gave way to diesel and electric traction. But some people were not prepared to let the romance of train travel die. Thanks to their efforts, many lines passed into community ownership and are now booming with new armies of dedicated volunteers. Andrew Martin meets these volunteer enthusiasts, finding out just what it is about preserved railways that makes people so devoted. From the inspiration for Thomas the Tank Engine to John Betjeman's battle against encroaching modernity, Steam Trains Today will take you on a heart-warming journey across Britain from Aviemore to Epping.
