Book excerpt: In Tallmadge Hill Mr. Reed takes us through the history of the All-American Soap Box Derby. This look at founder Myron Scott's creation begins with an idea for a competition involving young boys during the depression. It begins in 1933 as a local race in Dayton Ohio with youngsters competing in racers made from scraps collected wherever possible.Gaining interest and momentum, the derby becomes a national event in 1934 with champions from 34 cities across the country competing. The story, which is illustrated with more than one hundred historical photographs, then covers the move to Akron in1935, where 50,000 spectators witness the race held on a hill in the Akron suburb of Tallmadge. The event is chronicled in a heat by heat description of the day's race, complete with interesting facts and bios about each of the 52 champs. Which champ became a famous architect, which one a war hero, which one lost his life in World War II and which one played football for North Carolina University. They are all covered. Also told is the accident involving a famous broadcaster which changed the course of derby history. The story which is related in a manner easily understood by children and adults alike, is fascinating reading even for those who are not derby fans. After reading it you may become one.
Book Synopsis Champions, Cheaters, and Childhood Dreams by : Melanie Payne
Download or read book Champions, Cheaters, and Childhood Dreams written by Melanie Payne and published by The University of Akron Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With some scrap lumber and a dream, young Bob Turner became the first All-American Soap Box Derby world champion in 1934. Over the next 40 years, pushed by curiosity, ingenuity, determination and sometimes an overbearing father, thousands more would follow in his footsteps to try--for at least one day--to become the most famous boy in America. Covering the glory years of the Soap Box Derby, Champions, Cheaters, and Childhood Dreams provides a history of the race from its beginnings on a hillside in Dayton, to the corporate-sponsored star-studded event it became in the 1950s and 1960s, and to its near-obscurity after it was rocked by withdrawal of its major corporate sponsor and a legendary cheating scandal. Through first person accounts and historical narrative, Champions, Cheaters, and Childhood Dreams demonstrates how the Soap Box Derby mirrored American society. The hard scrapple Depression years, the patriotism of the war years, the idealism of post-World War II America, the hope and prosperity of the 1950s and 1960s and the breakdown of institutions and values during the Vietnam-war era, are told through the stories of the people who raced in and ran the All-American Soap Box Derby.

Download or read book New York 1776 written by David Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of General George Washington and the Continental Army's first major campaign, in a slimm detailed volume. General Sir William Howe's New York campaign gave the British their best chance of destroying the Continental Army and George Washington's resistance to colonial power. Howe succeeded in dividing the Continentals, defeated them on Long Island and forced Washington to retreat to Brooklyn Heights. Under siege there, Washington successfully crossed the East River to Manhattan but soon had to fall back on Harlem Heights. After a few weeks Howe forced the Continentals north to White Plains and defeated them again. However, he allowed Washington to withdraw and preserve his army when a more aggressive pursuit could have ended the war. Instead, with the British army rapidly weakening and facing huge manpower shortages, Washington emerged from a succession of defeats to produce what was ultimately a war-winning strategy. The author provides fascinating insights into a unique campaign in which a string of British victories ultimately led to failure and defeat.
Download or read book Oddball Ohio written by Jerome Pohlen and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This off-the-wall travel guide presents an Ohio odder than imagined. It wastes no time describing Cedar Point or suggesting scenic bike rides through the Hocking Hills; instead, this entertaining travel companion directs out-of-state adventurers and Buckeye state residents to the home of the world's largest cockroach, an Amish SUV, Egg Shell Land, a two-headed calf, and the Accounting Hall of Fame. Ohio is depicted as the birthplace of bar codes, Airstream trailers, televangelism, Paul Lynde, Alcoholics Anonymous, and the banana split. Odd stories abound, and tales of Ohio as the only state where Jerry Springer has been elected the mayor of a major city, where a brick outhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places, and where Buster the Dog voted for president accompany the site-seeing suggestions. Plenty of photos and maps ensure that this guide is as practical as it is wacky when seeking out wonders such as the Great Pumpkin Watertower, Goodyear's World of Rubber, and Bogart and Bacall's wedding site, then relaxing with a brew at the World's Longest Bar.
