Book excerpt: The perfect addition to every family’s home library and just right for sharing aloud, American Tall Tales introduces readers to America’s first folk heroes in nine wildly exaggerated and downright funny stories. Here are Paul Bunyan, that king-sized lumberjack who could fell “ten white pines with a single swing”; John Henry, with his mighty hammer; Mose, old New York’s biggest, bravest fireman; Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind, who could “outgrin, outsnort, outrun, outlift, outsneeze, outsleep, outlie any varmint”; and other uniquely American characters, together in one superb collection. In the tradition of the original nineteenth-century storytellers, Mary Pope Osborne compiles, edits, and adds her own two cents’ worth—and also supplies fascinating historical headnotes. Michael McCurdy’s robust colored wood engravings recall an earlier time, perfectly capturing all the vitality of the men and women who carved a new country out of the North American wilderness.

Book excerpt: "Technologically outmoded and once nearly swept from the seas, tall ships have experienced a fifty-year renaissance as sail training and passenger vessels, and we are the richer for it. After all, what sight has more power to stir the soul than a tall ship under sail with its acres of canvas and miles of rigging? But that resurgence has had a tragic side, and professional mariner and maritime scholar Dan Parrott explores it in Tall Ships Down, a groundbreaking reconstruction of the losses of the 316-foot barque Pamir in 1957; the 117-foot brigantine Albatross in 1961; the 117-foot barque Marques in 1984; the 137-foot Pride of Baltimore in 1986; and the 125-foot brig Maria Asumpta in 1995. Together, these disasters claimed 112 lives." "The stories of these majestic ships have been subject to mystery and distortion. In some instances even the survivors could not explain what went wrong, and in others the official inquiries failed to articulate the most critical lessons hidden in the sudden, terrible catastrophes - until now." "Parrott traces the history of each ship from its building and early career through subsequent owners' modifications. His vivid re-creations of each final voyage dissect the circumstances of loss from forensic evidence, expert testimony, survivors' memories, and his own considerable experience. Carefully examined, the evidence shows that, contrary to some official findings, ignorance of and disregard for age-old practices of seamanship were at least as responsible for the tragedies as "acts of God." In some instances the seeds of a ship's ultimate undoing were planted years before, as ill-considered structural changes, rig modifications, and "mission creep" eroded its stability and seaworthiness. Cargo loose in holds, hatches unsecured at sea, freeing ports timbered shut, failure to preserve proper sea room - these and other factors emerge from Parrott's analysis as contributing factors." --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 80TH BIRTHDAY EDITION - NOW WITH 10 NEW TALL TALES! THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'Connolly's raucous run through his life is as furious, funny and foul-mouthed as you'd expect' Sunday Times In December 2018, after fifty years of belly-laughs, energy and outrage, Billy Connolly announced his retirement from live stand-up comedy. It had been an extraordinary career. When he first started out in the late sixties, Billy played the banjo in the folk clubs of Scotland. Between songs, he would improvise a bit, telling anecdotes from the Clyde shipyard where he'd worked. In the process, he made all kinds of discoveries about what audiences found funny, from his own brilliant mimes to the power of speaking irreverently about politics or explicitly about sex. He began to understand the craft of great storytelling. Soon the songs became shorter and the monologues longer, and Billy quickly became recognised as one of the most exciting comedians of his generation. Tall Tales and Wee Stories brings together the very best of Billy's storytelling for the first time and includes his most famous routines including, The Last Supper, Jojoba Shampoo, Incontinence Pants and Shouting at Wildebeest. With an introduction and original illustrations by Billy throughout, it is an inspirational, energetic and riotously funny read, and a fitting celebration of our greatest ever comedian.

Book excerpt: The tale of one man's pursuit of an unshakable dream--a true story of swashbuckling adventures, classic tall ships, and a sailor's determination to prove himself right. It is the personal account of Captain Mike Burke and the Windjammer Barefoot Cruise line he built with his barefoot spirit and his iron will to succeed. This book offers an insider's view of how Captain Mike managed to save classic sailing ships from destruction, and put together one of the finest fleets in the world. Also included are stories of ships once owned by Aristotle Onassis, E.F. Hutton and his wife Marjorie Merriweather Post, and George Vanderbilt III, to mention only a few. While you may never experience the excitement of boarding a tall ship or feel the sea spray on your face as your ship glides through the ocean, you can come close by sharing these stories and pictures.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: The true story of how a family brought a wooden cargo ship back into the age of sail. Cecilia bought the first ship, a Thames barge, for family vacations--there were six children. Dominick bought the successor, a Baltic Trader, and then found this would be his career. Twenty years elapsed between the first days of the barge and the last day of the Baltic. From knowing virtually nothing about sailing ships, the author traces getting to grips with the problems of making sails on board, skipping between sandbanks, dragging anchor, losing a mast, crossing the Atlantic, fixing self-steering, avoiding hurricanes, hauling out for repairs, and his major preoccupation: failing to sink. For 13 years, the author had no other home, and for half that period never spent a night ashore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You will find here a collection of some of my favorite tall ship stories, I have authored and illustrated. I carefully selected some of my best stories with conservatively dressed ships' spirits. It is my hope that they will make a nice display piece for any home's coffee table and offer not just amazing old stories from the sea, but interesting designs and artwork to enjoy. The collection ranges from stories of romance to tales of heroic survival, but there is bound to be at least one old sea story that catches the reader's fascination. All of the stories are based on actual news events reported in 18th and 19th century newspapers. The unique angle to each sea yarn is that I retell the event from the perspective of the ship. Old sailors of the bygone sailing era, often believed their ships had minds of their own. They would refer the ship as a she. When sea stories were retold, sailors would talk about her, as if she was a live character in the story. I figured, why not just make the ship a character; after all she was and is the most important character in all these sea sagas. She's the star of the show. When the weather has turned foul and storms threaten, it is the ship that the sailors all depend on to keep them alive. These tall ship stories are about stout-hearted men who went down to an unpredictable sea in ships that were sometimes malevolent, sometimes motherly. Rather than these being sea stories just about a bunch of men and ships, a feminine element can be present in the stories. By re-emphasizing the ship's place in the stories both men and women relate to the sagas. Overall, this collection is a recounting of a time in history that can be enjoyed forever.
