Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks With Athenian Youths: Translations From the Charmides, Lysis, Laches, Euthydemus, and Theaetetus of Plato The application of this apparently simple rule was fraught with peculiar difficulties in a period of transition such as that in which the mission of Socrates was begun. Old schools of philosophy had lost their power and vitality, while the new conceptions destined to lay the foundations of modern phi losophy were as yet in process of evolution. Meanwhile the field temporarily left vacant was occupied by eristics, or masters in the art of word-fighting.2 Then indeed with truth might men be called slaves of their words.8 It needed only that a proposition should be boldly enunciated by some teacher of wisdom, for it to become straightway an axiom and the more unintelligible was its meaning, appar ently the more readily was it adopted. For logic, as yet an unknown study, had not taught men to see through verbal fallacies and consider each proposition in its exact meaning, not tricked out with empty words. 4 Failing to distinguish between forms of thought and forms of expression, they regarded the two as identical and interchangeable, while their unfamiliarity with abstract ideas constantly led them to confuse the abstract with the concrete. Book excerpt: "Moore and Raymond's Charmides is very impressive. The translation is excellent, and the Introduction and notes guide the reader into thorny problems in a way that renders them understandable: e.g., how to translate sôphrosunê, why we should care about self-knowledge, or how to seek to clarify important ethico-political concepts. The result provides almost all of what an instructor will need to introduce this unjustly neglected dialogue into a syllabus. Moreover, the volume is a wide-ranging resource for specialists. Students of the 'Socratic Dialogues' will profit greatly from this admirable contribution." —David J. Murphy is co-editor of Antiphontis et Andocidis Orationes (Oxford) and author of "The Basis of the Text of Plato's Charmides" (Mnemosyne) and many other contributions on the Charmides. He lives in New York City.

This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating from a study of the people's attitude in the first thirty years of the nineteenth century toward the classics, English Translations from the Greek by Finley Melville Kendall Foster lists the significant translations published during those years. In order to have the necessary material for a close study of the original list, extensive research was conducted for around fifty years. The result of these discoveries is embodied in the list of translations that make up this book's contents. Foster hopes to educate people about and make them familiar with the various kinds of Greek literature that have been popular at different times during the last four hundred and thirty years. He has in no way attempted to discuss the standards or the benchmarks of a good translation, the reason being that the making of an English version of a Greek original presents difficulties little distinct from those of translation from any other language into English.
