The choices you make have everything to do with where you are in life. Some may argue, "Not always. Sometimes life throws you a curveball." Of course, many things in life come without notice and without consent, but again, it's how we respond to those curveballs that make or break our path. Attaining and maintaining a Kingdom-of-God perspective at all times will allow us to actually thrive through the worst of times. People's biggest downfall in this life is not the circumstances, but how we perceive those circumstances. After all, perception is reality. Throughout life, it is inevitable to be hit head-on with tough situations that produce a need to talk ourselves off a proverbial ledge from which we'd like to jump! Life isn't smooth as depicted in works of fiction. Life has a million and one unexpected twists and turns and they can, invariably, cause one to want to inflict bodily harm to self or someone else, say things they ought not, run away, or even bring a sudden end to their life or another's. Life is hard because we live on a planet condemned since The Fall of Man and it can cause a person to experience surges of mass emotions that are not controlled by Holy Spirit. In these situations, one must choose to mature into a place in Christ where it is possible to talk ourselves down without waiting for someone to come to our aid; sometimes there simply isn't anyone available. These are the times where we grow if we so choose. These are the times where we can stop being dependent upon others to do for us what we who are hidden in Christ ought to be able to do for ourselves given the fact that Christ, who is our all-in-all, is the very breath we breathe. Holy Spirit is our comforter, our balance, our sanity, our calm and every other thing required to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. He encompasses everything required to encourage ourselves back into sanity, balance, peace, rest and a desire to move forward in His power. This book is written so as to give some guidance of how to do just that: talk yourself off the internal ledges of life from which we'd like to jump.

Book excerpt: How did Joan do that? Now you can find out! As we get older, our bodies go through many changes, especially physical and mental. Most are out of our control. But for those that aren’t, all we need sometimes is advice about how to make specific, sustainable, and successful decisions that can alter the course of how our lives go from that point forward. This is where Joan MacDonald of Train with Joan comes in. Just a few years ago, this septuagenarian wasn’t happy with how she looked and what she ate. With help from her daughter, Michelle (a certified strength and conditioning specialist), Joan developed exercise and diet goals as well as objectives for how to change her mindset—not just how she saw herself physically but how she felt about herself mentally regardless of her physical fitness or her age. Change is hard. Doing things differently than you did them before is hard. Making different choices is hard. But in this book that's part self-help and part memoir, you'll learn how Joan made her miraculous transformation as well as how Michelle helped her mother on that journey. But you'll also learn motivation techniques, fitness and nutrition fundamentals, and how to find and contribute to a community of support. Change is intimidating, but this book will help you learn what you’re capable of—and how to enrich yourself no matter at what stage in life you are. Everything you need to get started—and to stay dedicated to a new path—is inside this book. With Joan and Michelle by your side, you'll discover how to make changes for today, changes for tomorrow, and changes for the remainder of your life—long may you live.

Book excerpt: “You are a herald for your generation....Thank you for using your voice to help us make sense of that dark day, and forge a new beginning.”—Hillary Rodham Clinton, in a letter to Helaina Hovitz Helaina Hovitz was twelve years old and in middle school just blocks away when the World Trade Center was attacked. Her memoir encapsulates the journey of a girl growing up with PTSD after living through the events firsthand. After 9/11 chronicles its effects on a young girl at the outset of adolescence, following her as she spirals into addiction and rebellion, through loss, chaos, and confusion. The events of 9/11 were a very real part of Helaina’s life and are still vivid in her memory today. Hundreds were stranded in the neighborhood, including Helaina, without phones or electricity or anyone to help. Fear and despair took over her life. It would take Helaina more than a decade to overcome the PTSD — and subsequent alcohol addiction — that went misdiagnosed and mistreated. In many ways, After 9/11 is the story of a generation growing up in the aftermath of America’s darkest day —and for one young woman, it is the story of a survivor who, after witnessing the end, got to make a new beginning. This new trade paperback edition includes tips on how to cope with trauma, an FAQ section, and a guide to discussing 9/11 with children. “Inspirational, courageous and beautifully told. After 9/11 is a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit.” — Cathy Free, correspondent, PEOPLE magazine “Helaina Hovitz's engrossing narrative begins in the shadow of the twin towers with her as a backpack-toting twelve-year-old and plays out over the next fifteen years in dramatic - and sometimes distressing - detail. This impressive debut is both deeply evocative and intensely personal.” — Peter Canby, Senior Editor, The New Yorker “A moving and remarkable testament to a time that changed our country, told beautifully by a young woman who never gave up hope that she could reclaim her life, no matter how grim things looked.” — Sean Elder, contributor, Newsweek

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." (Matthew 6:34) "Don't worry." Sounds so simple, doesn't it? In Matthew 6:34, Jesus is encouraging Christians to live in the present. It has been said that depression is pain from the past, and anxiety is pain from the future. In order to live a happy life, we must learn to live in the present. Learning to live this way-the way Jesus prescribes-requires a change in our thinking. In order for this to happen, an understanding of the inner working of our brains is required. The human brain is comprised of two components-a thinking brain and a feeling brain. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and a host of other mental disorders can be traced back to a conflict between the thinking brain and the feeling brain. Make it to Midnight illustrates that each of us has two sides to our psyche that are often in conflict. Through his research, Jim Denning discovered that we not only have two components to our psyche, we actually have two brains. Jim's goal for this book is to explain the anatomy of that conflict and provide its readers with the tools necessary to achieve a better quality of life and, ultimately, inner peace.

Book excerpt: “If you’re raising a boy, you need this brilliant book. It is clear, wise, and eye-opening.” —Lisa Damour, Ph.D., author of Untangled When boys enter puberty, they tend to get quiet—or at least quieter than before—and parents often misread their signals. Here’s how to navigate their retreat and steer them through this confusing passage, by the bestselling author of The Care and Keeping of You series and Guy Stuff: The Body Book for Boys. What is my son doing behind his constantly closed door? What’s with his curt responses, impulsiveness, newfound obsession with gaming, and . . . that funky smell? As pediatrician and mother of two teenagers Cara Natterson explains, puberty starts in boys long before any visible signs appear, and that causes confusion about their changing temperaments for boys and parents alike. Often, they also grow quieter as they grow taller, which leads to less parent-child communication. But, as Natterson warns in Decoding Boys, we respect their increasing “need” for privacy, monosyllabic conversations, and alone time at their peril. Explaining how modern culture mixes badly with male adolescent biology, Natterson offers science, strategies, scripts, and tips for getting it right: • recognizing the first signs of puberty and talking to our sons about the wide range of “normal” through the whole developmental process • why teenagers make irrational decisions even though they look mature—and how to steer them toward better choices • managing video game and screen time, including discussing the unrealistic and dangerous nature of pornography • why boys need emotional and physical contact with parents—and how to give it in ways they’ll accept • how to prepare boys to resist both old and new social pressures—drugs, alcohol, vaping, and sexting • teaching consent and sensitivity in the #MeToo culture Decoding Boys is a powerful and validating lifeline, a book that will help today’s parents keep their sons safe, healthy, and resilient, as well as ensure they will become emotionally secure young men. Praise for Decoding Boys “Comforting . . . a common-sensical and gently humorous exploration of male puberty's many trials.”—Kirkus Reviews
