Book excerpt: As the 1970s came to an end, Buffalo Bills fans had little to cheer about. While O.J. Simpson proved a national treasure, the Bills remained the laughingstock of the league. Meanwhile, the city itself was reeling from the disastrous Blizzard of '77, steel and auto plant shutdowns, generally high unemployment, a decaying downtown and relentless razzing by Johnny Carson. But in the fall of 1980, the Bills, led by hardnosed coach Chuck Knox and gutsy quarterback Joe Ferguson, embarked on a stunning turnaround that began with a win at Rich Stadium over the hated Miami Dolphins - ending an unprecedented losing streak that spanned 20 games. What followed was one of the most memorable seasons on record including the first ever AFC East Championship. By coincidence the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce that fall had unveiled a widespread public relations effort to celebrate the region, including television and radio commercials featuring a snappy song, "Buffalo's got a spirit, talking proud talking proud..." This is the story of that magical Bills season, the spirited campaign and how the two became memorably intertwined. Unfairly discarded among the storied AFL teams of the mid-1960s and the great Super Bowl teams of the early 1990s, the Bills of 1980 didn't even win their playoff game, a heartbreaking loss in San Diego in which Ferguson nearly pulled out a victory playing on a broken ankle. But these Bills provided Buffalo with a reason to feel good just when the city needed it most. Using personal memories of growing up in South Buffalo in the shadow of Rich Stadium and extensive interviews, journalist Rich Blake brings this forgotten season to life with a sense of humor and poignancy that will have fans of all eras cherishing the '80 Bills, and once again talking proud. For anyone who ever wondered why Bills fans love their team so much this book makes it clear.

She has loved him since she was fourteen, but he went to America to make his fortune. After arriving in Miami, Kate rejects Michael’s proposal of marriage, believing it is only based on duty and obligation, while she wants love. Kate starts a successful restaurant called The Proud Irish Heart, but she cannot free herself from her desire for Michael. She is unsuccessful in her attempts to get him to renew his marriage proposal. Her passion for him increases when she learns his body while caring for him during a life-threatening fever. She feeds him, saves him from death by the fever and the designs of a lying woman, and finally attempts a seduction of Michael all without success. Michael fears making a commitment to their marriage and desires only Kate’s friendship. Frustrated, Kate leaves Miami. Will Michael follow her and propose again?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a dark night in February 2005, Sara Sheldon arrived at Camp Fallujah, outside the dangerous ancient city for which it was named. Armed only with a camera, a laptop, and notepads, she was a spectator to the war who secured permission to embed with the 1st MEF and observe and interview Marines who happened to be women then posted at Camp Fallujah. In the time she spent there, Sheldon interviewed women who held ranks from corporal to colonel to gain a broad and varied perspective of the experiences representative of female Marines throughout Iraq. She reveals much about her subjects: the preconceived notions they possessed when they enlisted in the Corps, how the experience of serving in Iraq changed them, and what they ultimately took home from the battlefield. Americans are aware that women are actively serving in the armed forces, but few understand what exactly is expected of women in the military, the duties they perform, and the limitations and restrictions placed on them, especially in a combat zone. Sheldon reveals much about her subjects. In some ways, they mirrored their male counterparts. Some enlisted only for four years to receive educational benefits or for an opportunity to escape their home environment. Others made the Corps their career, serving as commissioned officers. Still others were recalled to active duty to serve with their representative Guard units. Sheldon uncovers their stories: the preconceived notions they possessed when they enlisted in the Corps, how the experience of serving in Iraq has changed them, and what they ultimately took home from the battlefield. She also sheds light on the day-to-day grind all American service personnel face in Iraq. Yet, she never loses her main focus. Far removed from the Green Zone, Sheldon and her subjects spent their days in harm's way, but she avoids a running commentary on policy. Instead, she remains committed to examining how women tasked with field duties and various missions at the lower levels of command are impacted by their experiences.

Book excerpt: The 2018 Winter Olympics marked a milestone for LGBTQ+ athletes. Thirteen athletes out of 3,000 competitors were out and proud — nearly double the number who felt comfortable sharing their sexuality four years earlier at the Sochi Games. Many athletes stay closeted for their entire sports careers, often unable to compete at their highest ability because of the shame and self-doubt they feel in not being true to their orientation or identity. But coming out still means facing harassment from fans, teammates, opponents, and the media, and a lack of sponsorship opportunities. While organizations like You Can Play, the Canadian Olympic Committee and Eagle Canada have made progress in recent years in promoting inclusivity at the grassroots and elite sporting levels, there is still much work to be done to ensure all athletes feel safe being their authentic selves. Athletes profiled include swimmer Mark Tewksbury, rhythmic gymnast Rose Cossar, professional hockey player Brock McGillis, speed skater Anastasia Bucsis, pairs figure skater Eric Radford, volleyball players Betty Baxter and Christopher Voth and hockey player Angela James. Generously illustrated with photographs and given context by an overview of the history of LGBTQ+ athletes in Canada, this book will make all young sports enthusiasts and competitors proud to play.

Book excerpt: This is a book about ethnocentric niche charter schools. What are they? When did they first appear? From where did the term come? How do they differ from regular charter schools and from district-run traditional public schools? Each subject chapter was created by a team consisting of at least one educational researcher and at least one charter school practitioner. The goal is to make the book readable for everyone (policymakers, parents, teachers, older students) while providing a framework of rigor from which to view each charter school. Hence: the teams. The authors took special pains to create a book which exhibits the objectivity of the educational researcher while, at the same time, inviting the reader into each school by painting a human picture of its ethos. Each chapter contains a description of the school told by people who actually taught or learned or sent their children there.
