Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'The Necromancer: or The Tale of the Black Forest,' Carl Friedrich Kahlert crafts a narrative imbued with the supernatural elements and uncanny landscapes characteristic of the gothic tradition. The story, set in the ominous and enigmatic Black Forest, is a mélange of ghostly apparitions, dark magic, and mysterious events that challenge the boundaries of reality. Kahlert's prose, redolent with the heightened emotionality and medievalist sensibilities of early 19th-century gothic literature, immerses the reader in a world where the macabre and the romantic intertwine, exemplifying the genre's fascination with the darker aspects of the human psyche and the natural world. The author's masterful use of suspense and gothic motifs situates the work within its literary context, inviting comparisons to contemporaneous works by authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Matthew Gregory Lewis. Carl Friedrich Kahlert, writing under the pseudonym Ludwig Flammenberg, was steeped in the gothic literary movement of his time. Kahlert's foray into the realm of the supernatural in 'The Necromancer' may be seen as an expression of the era's preoccupation with the irrational and the unknown, phenomena that found fertile ground in the wake of the Enlightenment's rationalism. The impact of gothic literature in shaping his narrative is evident, reflecting Kahlert's engagement with, and contribution to, the cultivation of the genre's enduring legacy. The backdrop of the enigmatic Black Forest further adds a dimension of authenticity and folklore to the narrative, an indication of Kahlert's likely familiarity with Germanic tales and myths that underpin the story's setting. This edition of 'The Necromancer: or The Tale of the Black Forest' by DigiCat Publishing is a testament to the timeless appeal of gothic fiction and is recommended for enthusiasts of classic literature seeking to explore the depths of early gothic storytelling. Scholars and students of the genre will find Kahlert's novel a captivating study in the exploration of supernatural themes and their intersection with human emotion. It's a book that invites readers to traverse the gloomy forest trails alongside its characters, surrendering to the thrill of the unknown that lurks within its pages.

Book excerpt: Monty is nineteen, the eldest son on the family farm. They live near the edge of the Dromm woods, infamous for its black, leafless trees. Some say it's cursed; others laugh at the thought. Monty doesn't believe in any of that. He just wants to take care of his family, carry on his father's legacy, and one day, get off the farm and do something bigger. But when Terra disappears one night and Monty finds her unconscious among the black trees, things start to change. She's acting odd. He swears Terra to secrecy, knowing that if anyone found out, their farm would be ruined. Even their mother can't know. And now people in town are dying. One by one. Mysterious and awful deaths, leaving the corpses withered and rotten. The townspeople fear a plague, but Monty suspects something far worse. That the stories are true. That the black forest is cursed, and with each death, the evil taking their lives is growing stronger. Something has escaped the black forest. Something that wants to kill them all. And time is running out.

Book excerpt: “The Necromancer” is a 1794 Gothic novel written by Karl Friedrich Kahlert, published under the pseudonym 'Lawrence Flammenberg'. One of the seven 'horrid novels' ridiculed by Jane Austen in her famous novel “Northanger Abbey”, it contains a series of vivid stories concerning violence, hauntings, and the supernatural adventures of Helfried, Hermann, and the mysterious Necromancer, Volker. “The Necromancer” is told through multiple verbal or epistolary narratives from the perspective of different characters. These sequences became typical of the genre, as well as signposts for readers indicating that the work was fiction—or at least of dubious credibility. This early work of Gothic fiction constitutes a must-read for fans of the genre and is not to be missed by collectors. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-qual edition complete with the original text and artwork.

Book excerpt: Daughter of the Forest is a testimony to an incredible author's talent, a first novel and the beginning of a trilogy like no other: a mixture of history and fantasy, myth and magic, legend and love. Lord Colum of Sevenwaters is blessed with six sons: Liam, a natural leader; Diarmid, with his passion for adventure; twins Cormack and Conor, each with a different calling; rebellious Finbar, grown old before his time by his gift of the Sight; and the young, compassionate Padriac. But it is Sorcha, the seventh child and only daughter, who alone is destined to defend her family and protect her land from the Britons and the clan known as Northwoods. For her father has been bewitched, and her brothers bound by a spell that only Sorcha can lift. To reclaim the lives of her brothers, Sorcha leaves the only safe place she has ever known, and embarks on a journey filled with pain, loss, and terror. When she is kidnapped by enemy forces and taken to a foreign land, it seems that there will be no way for her to break the spell that condemns all that she loves. But magic knows no boundaries, and Sorcha will have to choose between the life she has always known and a love that comes only once. Juliet Marillier is a rare talent, a writer who can imbue her characters and her story with such warmth, such heart, that no reader can come away from her work untouched. All rights reserved. Chapter 10 - Egon Egon, spewing and cursing, trampled through the halls of the Castle of Bosartig. He was rage walking. All the mice in the kingdom that saw him from a distance backed off and quickly fled the other way, probably hoping they had not been spotted. Those less fortunate, quickly learned the folly of being in the path of a mouse gone mad. Egon had already given orders to have all the mouse soldiers ready by the time he made it to the front of the castle. The mouse soldiers were lined up row by row by the time Egon made it out to the castle's courtyard. Many gulped when Egon appeared. "Mice!" Egon bellowed. "Yes, King Egon." The mouse soldiers shivered as they quickly knelt in unison. King Egon thrust his sword in the air above his head. "We are on our way to the Ice Palace. Nordika thinks her army can protect Dustin and that young girl. Can she protect them?" Egon said with an evil laugh. The mouse soldiers said nothing. They hung their heads low. "You!" Egon hollered as he pointed to one of the mouse soldiers up front. All heads immediately turned. Some mice could be heard sighing with relief. Egon was not speaking to them. The soldier Egon pointed out quickly ran forward. Directly in front of Egon, he knelt down on one knee and bowed his head. "Yes, King Egon," he said meekly, almost in a whisper. Tears could be seen welling up in the soldier's eyes. "I remember you from our last battle," Egon continued as he walked from side to side with his head held high. The poor mouse soldier softly responded, "Yes." "Stand and look behind you!" Egon ordered while he rammed his sword into its holster. The mouse soldier jumped up and looked at the rows of mouse soldiers still kneeling with their faces partly lowered. "Now, tell me what you see." The mouse soldier looked perplexed and gulped. In a shrill and confused voice, he responded, "Mouse soldiers?" Egon walked from left to right and templed his sharp claws, tapping them together in front of his chest. "Yes, mouse soldiers," he affirmed in a commanding low voice. "And none of those faces will be here tomorrow if we don't get that girl and Dustin by the stroke of the next hour." Egon then charged forward. The mouse soldiers followed quickly behind him. Their long tails swished from side to side, leaving marks in the snow.
