Download or read book The Story of Louis XVII of France written by Elizabeth Edson Gibson Evans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Louis XVII of France My sole object in writing The Story of Louis XVII. is to make a useful contribution to authentic history. I firmly believe that Eleazer Williams was the Dauphin, and to establish this fact is to explain many historical mysteries, and also to clear the character of an honest man who suffered greatly during his life, and died "under a cloud," as an impostor. I never saw Eleazer Williams, nor any of his descendants. I am a member of the Williams family; and Eleazer, as a supposed relative, often visited at my grandfather's house, and was intimate with two of my uncles. But that was before my day, and I never heard of the man until the publication of the article, "Have we a Bourbon among us?" in 1853. I happened then to be with one of the uncles alluded to, and on reading the statement, he exclaimed: - "Now I understand! That explains it!" Afterwards he told me that when they were both young, Eleazer used to tell him about wonderful visions of beautiful scenes and splendidly-dressed people which haunted him, and which seemed to be fleeting reminiscences of what had really happened in his childhood. [1736 --1745.] After the temporary subjection of the Highlands, in 1720 and the years immediately succeeding, had been in appearance completed, by the establishment of garrisons, the formation of military roads, and the general submission of the Highland clans who were most opposed to Government, Scotland enjoyed a certain degree of internal repose, if not of prosperity. To estimate the nature of this calm, we must look at the state of the country in two points of view, as it concerned the Highlands and the Lowlands. In the Lowlands a superior degree of improvement began to take place, by the general influence of civilization, rather than by the effect of any specific legislative enactment. The ancient laws which vested the administration of justice in the aristocracy continued to be a cause of poverty amongst the tenantry of the country. Every gentleman of considerable estate possessed the power of a baron, or lord of regality, and by means of a deputy, who was usually his factor or land-steward, exercised the power of dispensing justice, both...
