Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales in Verse, Vol. 1 of 2: Critical, Satirical, and Humorous In a periodical Work, entitled The Wits' Magazine, published in the year 1783, of the four first numbers of which I was the Editor, the fourth, fifth, and seventh of the following Tales first appeared: the remainder have never before been published. To excite emulation and increase the sale, the proprietor of the Wits' Magazine thought proper to bestow medals, on such correspondents as communicated the best prose and poetical compositions; but as it was difficult to find any, which were sent, that could plausibly be worthy of such reward, except by much alteration, the task of altering devolved upon the Editor.
