Book excerpt: It will never be known just how many men, women and children have died and lie buried in the bush. Many of the deaths were not registered, and they are known only because the local paper reported on them. It was not the selector who lost his life, but usually men who had no idea how harsh the country could be, and consequently took risks by walking between stations looking for work, most times with very little water, and not much idea of where they were going. Many of the men were suffering from alcohol related problems. Most deaths were caused by fever, accidents, suicide, and murder. The women followed their men, enduring the harsh conditions and sometimes not seeing another white woman for years. They died during child birth, usually the baby died as well. Young children succumbed to the harsh conditions, dying of convulsions, poisoning, and accidents.

Book excerpt: As the country to the north of Australia was being explored and taken up by men from Victoria and New South Wales hoping to make their fortune, other men were making their way out west, also keen to make good. Sesbania was one of the earliest selections taken up by John and James Nisbett. Douglas Harper was working on Sesbania, when he shot himself, whether accidentally or purposely is unknown. He was an Overseer, and died on 12th November, 1878. This is the earliest recorded death in this book. William Russel Myers was a shearer probably working on Manuka, or making his way there. He died from exhaustion and thirst on 3rd December, 1878. George Laxton who was a blacksmith, died at Mills Creek, also from thirst and exhaustion. He was probably walking to the next job, but died on 16th February, 1879, and was buried at Mills Creek, on Manuka. These three were just the beginning of dozens of men, women and children who lost their lives through thirst, exhaustion, accident, fever and murder. This book was written to record their lives and deaths in the Winton area of western Queensland.

Book excerpt: Formed just two months after Pearl Harbor and rushed to the Pacific by General MacArthur, the 317th Troop Carrier Group entered combat at Wau, New Guinea just one week after landing in Australia. For over two and a half years the men of the 317th flew their unarmed transports over enemy-held territory while living in the hot, humid, disease-infested jungles of New Guinea and the Philippines; many times subjected to Japanese bombings and ground attacks. Their reputation of getting the job done at all costs resulted in the Group being chosen by the 5th AF's General Kenney as the Troop Carrier Group to drop paratroopers in the SWPA; participating in all five major parachute drops in the Pacific: Nadzab, Noemfoor, Tagaytay Ridge, Corregidor and Aparri. These stories, told by the men themselves, chronicle the actions of both the air crews and the often forgotten men on the ground; during and immediately following the war in the Pacific.

Book excerpt: Combining humor and memorable anecdotes, five famous ecotourist destinations offer a breathtaking backdrop to better understanding climate change. Crossing the far corners of the globe, Tales of an Ecotourist showcases travel, from the hot and humid Amazon jungle to the frozen but dry Antarctic, as a simple yet spellbinding lens to better understand the complex issue of climate change. At its core, climate change is an issue few truly understand, in large part due to its dizzying array of scientific, economic, cultural, social, and political variables. Using both keen humor and memorable anecdotes, while weaving respected scientific studies along the way, Mike Gunter Jr. transports the reader to five famous ecodestinations, from the Galapagos Islands to the Great Barrier Reef, revealing firsthand the increasing threats of climate change. Part travelogue, part current events exposé, with a healthy dose of history, ecology, and politics, these tales of ecoadventure tackle such obstacles head on while fleshing out much-needed personal context to perhaps society’s greatest threat of all. “Gunter takes us to the far corners of the globe to understand the lived experience of climate change. More than a travelogue, Tales of an Ecotourist explains how getting outside—out of our houses, immediate surroundings, and comfort zones—can awaken all of us to the realities and urgency of a warming world. This is a rich, beautifully written, and compelling book.” — Paul Wapner, author of Living Through the End of Nature: The Future of American Environmentalism “In Tales of an Ecotourist Mike Gunter Jr. takes you on a remarkable journey, both figuratively and literally, as he recounts his experiences visiting some of the most amazing places on our planet. As a genuine, true-to-principles ecotourist, he has an important lesson for us: If we are to veer from our current path of global environmental degradation, we will have to come to appreciate firsthand its remarkable wonder and beauty.” — Michael E. Mann, coauthor of The Madhouse Effect: How Climate Change Denial Is Threatening Our Planet, Destroying Our Politics, and Driving Us Crazy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is some evidence that Japanese people may have visited Australia before the Europeans settled here. The Japanese government legalised emigration in 1866 and twernty-four passports to Australia were issued between 1868 and 1882. The first Japanese settler to arrive in Queensland in the 1870s was a circus acrobat. By the end of the century nearly 4000 Japanese lived in Australia, and 88% of them in Queensland. Few people realise that Townsville in North Queensland hosted the first Japanese Consuls based in Australia. They served their countrymen who were working in the pearling, trochus shell and sugar industries. The previously little known and fascinating story of Townsville's Japanese Consuls, which is superbly illustrated by Townsville-based artist Tate Adams, will surprise and delight.
