Book excerpt: The purpose of this rich and innovatively presented ethnography is to explore mobility, sense of place and time on the British Columbia coast. On the basis of almost 400 interviews with ferry passengers and over 250 ferry journeys, the author narrates and reflects on the performance of travel and on the consequences of ferry-dependence on island and coastal communities. Ferry Tales inaugurates a new series entitled Innovative Ethnographies for Routledge (innovativeethnographies.net). The purpose of this hypermedia book series is to use digital technologies to capture a richer, multimodal view of social life than was otherwise done in the classic, print-based tradition of ethnography, while maintaining the traditional strengths of classic, ethnographic analysis. Book excerpt: Illustrated throughout with original photographs and drawings, this book offers a comprehensive view of twentieth-century Scottish boating, looking at fishing boats, small craft, ferries, boatyards and shipyards. Working as a ship inspector on the West Coast of Scotland, a society reliant on water transportation, Walter Weyndling had a busy and essential role. Responsible for the sea-worthiness of countless vessels and therefore the lives of their captains and crews, Weyndling's job took him the length of the coast and introduced him to many entertaining characters along the way. The dangers of the sea-faring life are also examined in Weyndling's examinations of marine casualties. Although West Coast Tales is a book about boats, it is also a compelling portrait of life on the western coast and on the islands. It is the people whose lives are connected so closely to ship and sea who are most vividly remembered by Weyndling, from taciturn skippers and stubborn captains, to East End Londoners turned Islay farmers. Comic yet moving, West Coast Tales has a gentle and reminiscent tone, perfectly capturing the attitudes of the time, whilst taking the reader on a journey through Scotland's boating history.

When international relations expert Sean Penn leads his own "tour of peace" in Baghdad, every news desk across the country reports it. It's no secret that Hollywood has a leftward tilt when it comes to politics. But what the celebrity-fawning media fail to show is how Hollywood's liberal bias affects actors, movies, and even public policy. In Tales from the Left Coast, author and political commentator James Hirsen digs deep into the liberal underbelly of Hollywood to reveal how biased politics have corrupted the entire entertainment industry. Through extensive research and scores of interviews, Hirsen uncovers some of the most ridiculous, infuriating, and damning political stunts pulled by celebrities of yesterday and today, and he traces the tangled web of influence the Hollywood elite have over politicians in Washington, D.C.

Book excerpt: It was 2008 when the author took the first intrepid steps from Minehead, in Somerset, heading for Poole in Dorset, six hundred and thirty miles away. Walking the path was a meditation, with nothing to think about except facing and overcoming the challenges presented day by day, whether by the terrain or the weather. Even in the most remote and inaccessible places she felt safe and at one with the land. They gave her the space and the silence to explore and develop the stories that were taking shape in her mind. When asked for the genre of these tales, Jo explained they were like the contents of those bags of sweets called 'Lucky Bags' that she was passionate about as a child. Like those bags, this is a 'Lucky Bag of Tales' -- a mixture of gruesome murder, ghostly tales, sentient landscapes and wartime dramas. It was the landscape that dictated the sort of story needing to be told. Some of the stories embrace the dark side of religion and spiritual beliefs. Yet others are of the genre magical realism where creatures, usually invisible to humankind, make themselves known to those open to the possibility of their reality. The places in which these twenty eight stories are set, are factual. The people, however, are fictitious. That is fortunate because you really wouldn't want to meet any of them on some of the more remote sections of the path. At the end of each story, there is additional information and explanation about the origins of the tale. These have been added for interest and background information. This collection of stories will inform and entertain, not only walkers on the path, but also those open to exploring the hidden realms of human existence through the landscape. Perhaps they will entice the reader to walk at least some sections of this amazing long distance trail. If they do, please stay vigilant, for now that the characters have been given life in these stories, they will live in the landscape forever. The stories in this book were originally published in four separate volumes and for those only interested in one section of the path, these are still in publication.

Latino boxing stories have floated around for ages without the benefit of being passed down from generation to generation. Buried tales and colorful narratives of beloved Mexican ring idols such as Ruben Olivares, Mando Ramos, Carlos Zarate, Danny "Little Red" Lopez, Bobby Chacon, Carlos Palomino, and Alberto Davila are showcased in these pages, their stories revived because no champion deserves to be forgotten. Other overlooked heroes and one-hit wonders of the golden era of Southland boxing (1940s-1970s) will also be saluted, along with the bygone contenders of the barrio who never saw their name in neon lights.

Book excerpt: Rising Urban Books star C. N. Phillips delivers modern fairytales with an urban fiction twist. “Maid for You”: When Ava Dunning’s mother is killed in a senseless act of violence, it feels like the world has ended. Now on her own, with the bills piling up, Ava is forced to take a job with a company called Maid For You. Trying to clock as many hours as she can, Ava jumps at the opportunity to do some overtime on the side, only to discover that she’s bitten off more than she can chew. Just like that, she becomes a cleaner for King Dex, one of the most notorious kingpins on the West Coast. It’s nothing for him to pay a couple thousand dollars for her to clean up his dirty work, and she’s happy for the paycheck. Things become complicated when Ava discovers that King Dex played a part in her mother’s death. Now Ava is set on revenge, but when she meets Charmont, King Dex’s son, and falls head over heels, she must make the hardest decision of her life. Which half of her heart should she follow? “Robin the Hood”: There are many things that can happen when you make someone mad. They can hold a grudge, curse you out . . . or hire somebody to rob and kill you. Her name is Robin, and the hood claimed her long before she got into this business. She and her team of outlaws are hired by major hitters in the game to collect debts with either money or souls, plus tax for their own needs. When Robin is offered triple the usual rate to double cross the man she has fallen in love with, greed gets the best of her. When the hit goes wrong and her identity is exposed, Robin makes enemies that she thought she’d only see in her nightmares. Follow this grimey tale and see if this girl from the hood will find her way out of a sticky situation, or pay the ultimate price in blood.

Goaltenders deflected and blocked with creativity, stickhandled with bold strokes and fearlessly faced a puck travelling at speeds of 100 miles an hour. And they took a beating. Some of these stars made their saves before the mask; others got their shut-outs without padded blockers or trappers. This is an exhilarating chronicle of the quiet guardians of the crease.
