The book is designed to make the stories of Shakespeare's plays familiar to the young.[1] However, as noted in the authors' Preface, "[Shakespeare's] words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story, diligent care has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote: therefore, words introduced into our language since his time have been as far as possible avoided." Mary Lamb was responsible for the comedies, while Charles wrote the tragedies; they wrote the preface between them. The book contains the following tales: 1.The Tempest (Mary Lamb) 2.A Midsummer Night's Dream (Mary Lamb) 3.The Winter's Tale (Mary Lamb) 4.Much Ado About Nothing (Mary Lamb) 5.As You Like It (Mary Lamb) 6.Two Gentlemen of Verona (Mary Lamb) 7.The Merchant of Venice (Mary Lamb) 8.Cymbeline (Mary Lamb) 9.King Lear (Charles Lamb) 10.Macbeth (Charles Lamb) 11.All's Well That Ends Well (Mary Lamb) 12.The Taming of the Shrew (Mary Lamb) 13.The Comedy of Errors (Mary Lamb) 14.Measure for Measure (Mary Lamb) 15.Twelfth Night (Mary Lamb) 16.Timon of Athens (Charles Lamb) 17.Romeo and Juliet (Charles Lamb) 18.Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (Charles Lamb) 19.Othello (Charles Lamb) 20.Pericles, Prince of Tyre (Mary Lamb)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pook Press celebrates the great Golden Age of Illustration in children's literature. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1850s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality, colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was one of the premier illustrators of the early 20th Century. He illustrated many books, the first of which was published in 1893. Throughout his career he had developed a very individual style that is was to influence a whole generation of children, artists and other illustrators. His haunting humour and dreamlike romance adds to the enchantment and fantasy of children's literature.

Book excerpt: Tales from Shakespeare - All the Tales from Shakespeare - Charles & Mary Lamb - Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Tales from Shakespeare also known as All the Tales from Shakespeare is an English children's book written by Charles Lamb with his sister Mary Lamb in 1807. It was illustrated by Sir John Gilbert in 1866, Arthur Rackham in 1899 and 1909, by Louis Monzies in 1908, by Walter Paget in 1910, and by D. C. Eyles in 1934. In 1894, a two-volume set with color plate illustrations and a preface by H.S. Morris, was published jointly by the J.B. Lippincott Company in Philadelphia, and in London by William Heinemann. The book reduced the archaic English and complicated storyline of Shakespeare to a simple level that children could read and comprehend. However, as noted in the author's Preface, "his words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story, diligent care has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote: therefore, words introduced into our language since his time have been as far as possible avoided." Mary Lamb was responsible for the comedies, while Charles wrote the tragedies; they wrote the preface between them. Next to his essays, this book is his best-known work; yet its success is attributable more to Mary, whose name did not appear on the title page of the first few editions, than to Charles"

Book excerpt: First published in 1807, "Tales from Shakespeare" is the classic retelling of Shakespeare's plays by brother and sister duo Charles and Mary Lamb. All told twenty of Shakespeare's plays are represented in this work. On what basis the two made their selection of tales is unknown, the English Histories are left unattempted, as well as the Roman Plays. Of the comedies only "Love's Labour's Lost" is omitted. As Alfred Ainger comments in his introduction "perhaps Miss Lamb felt how little would have remained of the original comedy when the poetical element in its language and the brilliant wit of its dialogue had been removed." What is represented of Shakespeare's plays is a magnificent retelling of some of his most popular works, ideal for introducing young readers to the brilliance of the Bard. As the two write in their preface "The following Tales are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare," so "that the true Plays of Shakespeare may prove to them in older years--enrichers of the fancy, strengtheners of virtue, a withdrawing from all selfish and mercenary thoughts, a lesson of all sweet and honourable thoughts and actions." This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper, includes an introduction by Alfred Ainger, and illustrations by Arthur Rackham.
