Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naulahka: A Story of West and East Kate Sheriff had lived with her face to the west and with her smouldering eyes fixed upon the wil derness since she could walk. She had advanced into the wilderness with the railroad. Until she had gone away to school she had never lived where the railroad ran both ways. She had often stayed long enough at the end of a section with her family to see the first glimmering streaks of the raw dawn of civilization, usually helped out by the electric light; but in the new and still newer lands to which her father's civil-engineering orders called them from year to year there were not even arc lamps. There was a saloon under a tent, and there was the section-house, where they lived, and where her mother had sometimes taken to board the men employed by her husband. But it was not these influences alone that had produced the young woman of twenty-three who sat near Tarvin, and who had just told him gently that she liked him, but that she had a duty elsewhere. This duty, as she conceived it, was, briefly, to spend her life in the East in the effort to better the condition of the women of India. It had come to her as an inspiration and a command two years before, toward the end of her second year at the St. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Stories of the East There are few stories which in themselves are more intensely interesting than those that have come down to us from antiquity through the medium of the Hebrew Scriptures. Yet they have been so generally and so exclusively employed for the purpose of imparting religious instruction, that their purely literary qualities have not always received the attention which they merit. By very many persons, grown-up people as well as children, they are regarded as being inseparably connected with the services of the Sunday school and the Church, and hence scarcely to be thought of during the secular days of the week. There is really no good reason why this should be so. Indeed, there is no good reason why children in the day schools should not read these old stories of the East with as much freedom and with as eager zest as they peruse the classic myths of Greece or the ever-charming tales with which the world of modem fiction abounds. In the present volume it has been the aim of the author to retell these stories from a literary standpoint, and in exactly the same manner as he would retell other stories pertaining to the infancy of the human race. But the reader will not fail to feel the note Of serious scientific thought to which the narrative is keyed, every page pregnant with purposeful portrayal of the great renaissance of thought and ideals which marked the period of the seventies and eighties in the West and which effected such amarvellous change in the position held by woman in society. N 0 more fascinating pages have been written than Allisto's autobiography; and his apparent lineage with the ancient Kings of Delhi and his Vision of the UI terre Race are sufficiently striking in themselves to lift the work far above or dinary novels. I can't say her packing gave her much trouble. Next Thursday evening came the White Bear to fetch her, and she got upon his back with her bundle, and off they went. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Middle Ground; Or Between East and West: A Christmas Story Quick in a somewhat peculiar manner, viz: by the presence of certain unmistakable evidences that it was the morning after Saturday night. The camp was known far and wide as a particularly lively one - indeed, there were some sanguine spirits who were known to have predicted that if it survived it would shortly rival Cheyenne. On the morning in question its liveliness was of rather a drowsy and befuddled kind, but there were not wanting signs that it had been true to itself, and had fully maintained its character, on the previous evening. From out the entrance of no less than seven tents protruded what looked in the dim light of early morning like black logs, arranged in pairs, but which became revealed, when the sun rose higher, as the pedal extremities of a corresponding number of citizens, whoso devotion to the bottle over night had incapacitated them from winning their way further into the interior of their respective domicils. But the early sun shone on uglier things than the fourteen mud-encrusted boots of the seven oblivious citizens aforementioned. In the center of the little alley, which formed the main and only street, stood a tent erected over and enclosing a rude frame of lumber. It was larger and more ambitious than its fellows, and a canvas sign nailed along its front informed the public that Mr. Richard Bouser was prepared to dispense liquid refreshments of every imaginable description. This place was silent now, and the canvas curtain that served for a door was drawn close. But the thick, pasty mud in front was trampled and stamped as with furiously struggling feet, and within a radius of ten yards lay three citizens who would never again be enrolled among the customers of Mr. Richard Bouser. They all lay with their heads outward, and their feet pointing towards the doorway. They all lay on their backs, their faces white, and set, and rigid, and their eyes glaring unwinkingly at the sun, that stared down in return as though amazed. On their soiled and torn clothing, and their hands and faces, were stains; and round about their bodies, and in the deep footmarks of the trampled space, stood little pools and runlets of some dark fluid that resembled the ooze which fills the hoof-prints of cattle at their drinking places in marshy ground.
