Book excerpt: Public involvement in crime prevention activities has emerged as a critical issue in recent years as it has become clear that citizens can play a key role in reducing crime. Numerous efforts have been aimed at encouraging citizens to take actions to reduce their own risk of victimization, and that of others as well. One prominent effort has been a three-year-old "Take a Bite Out of Crime" national media campaign, sponsored by the Crime Prevention Coalition in cooperation with the Advertising Council. This report summarizes research evaluating the impact of that campaign on public awareness, attitudes, and actions concerning crime prevention, and offers recommendations for future public information strategies aimed at encouraging increased citizen participation in crime prevention. The evaluation findings indicate that mass media campaigns can be effective in changing people's crime prevention attitudes and behaviors, and that mass media can be effective tools in promoting cooperative prevention efforts among citizens.

Book excerpt: For a free 30-day online trial to this title, visit www.sagepub.com/freetrial In many ways, the two fields of victimology and crime prevention have developed along parallel yet separate paths, and the literature on both has been scattered across disciplines as varied as sociology, law and criminology, public health and medicine, political science and public policy, economics, psychology and human services, and others. The Encyclopedia of Victimology and Crime Prevention brings together in one authoritative resource the dispersed information and knowledge on both victimology and crime prevention. With nearly 375 entries, this two-volume set moves victimology and crime prevention one step further into recognized scholarly fields whose research informs practice and whose practice informs research. Key Features Provides users with the most authoritative and comprehensive coverage available on victimology and crime prevention Presents victimology and crime prevention as their own separate, justifiable disciplines rather than subfields within more established disciplines Discusses the status of victims within the criminal justice system, as well as topics of deterring and preventing victimization in the first place and responding to victims′ needs Offers "anchor essays" written by leading scholars in their respective fields to provide starting points for investigating the more salient victimology and crime prevention topics Key Themes Business Prevention Actions Civil Justice System Correlates of Victimization Courts: Alternative Remedies Courts: Law and Justice Crime Prevention Crime Prevention Partnerships Criminal Justice System Fear of Crime Individual Protection Actions Interventions and Intervention Programs for Victim and Offender Intrafamilial Offenses Legislation and Statutes Media and Crime Prevention Methodology Offenses, Special Topics Official Crime Data Personal Offenses Property Offenses Psychological, Mental, and Physical Health Issues Residential Community Crime Prevention School and Workplace Offenses School-Based Crime Prevention Services and Treatment for Victims Theory Victimization Scales and Surveys Victimology Youth-Focused Crime Prevention The victimology–crime prevention nexus provides the foundation for a comprehensive and, hopefully, long-lasting approach to addressing the public′s risk of being victimized and aids individuals who are targeted by a criminal act. This is a welcome addition to any academic library. The availability in print and electronic formats provides students with convenient, easy access wherever they may be.

Book excerpt: Crime Prevention: Approaches, Practices, and Evaluations, Tenth Edition, meets the needs of students and instructors for engaging, evidence-based, impartial coverage of interventions that can reduce or prevent deviance. This edition examines the entire gamut of prevention, from physical design to developmental prevention to identifying high-risk individuals to situational initiatives to partnerships and beyond. Strategies include primary prevention measures designed to prevent conditions that foster deviance; secondary prevention measures directed toward persons or conditions with a high potential for deviance; and tertiary prevention measures to deal with persons who have already committed crimes. In this book, Lab offers a thorough and well-rounded discussion of the many sides of the crime prevention debate in clear and accessible language, including the latest research concerning space syntax, physical environment and crime, neighborhood crime prevention programs, community policing, crime in schools, and electronic monitoring and home confinement. This book is essential for undergraduates studying criminal justice, criminology, and sociology, in the US and globally. Online resources include an instructor’s manual, test bank, and lecture slides for faculty, and a wide array of resources for students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses and reviews progress in a major innovative development within police work known as evidence-based policing. It involves a significant extension and strengthening of links between research and practice and is directed to the task of increasing police effectiveness in the field of community crime prevention. This volume provides an international perspective that synthesizes recent research results from the United States and other countries – including systematic reviews of large bodies of evidence – to illuminate several of the most challenging issues currently confronting police departments. It examines recent advances in research-based models of policing and the expanding base in outcome evaluation. Key areas of coverage include: Managing the nighttime economy. Supervising sex offenders. Tackling domestic/intimate partner violence. Addressing school violence and the formation of gangs. Reducing victim and witness retraction and disengagement. Responding to mental disorders, safeguarding vulnerable adults, and providing victim support. Leveraging public awareness campaigns. In addition, each chapter presents an overview of key issues within a designated area, synthesizes existing reviews, and examines the most recent research. The book clearly and concisely presents major concepts, theories, and research findings, thereby providing both conceptual and analytic tools alongside an integrated presentation of principal findings and messages. The volume concludes with a discussion of current directions in research, key developments in policing strategies, and identification of effective operational structures for facilitating and sustaining research-practice links. Evidence-Based Policing and Community Crime Prevention is a must-have resource for researchers, clinicians and other professionals, and graduate students in forensic psychology, criminology and criminal justice, public health, developmental psychology, psychotherapy and counseling, psychiatry, social work, educational policy and politics, health psychology, nursing, and behavioral therapy/rehabilitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SAGE Encyclopedia of Criminal Psychology will be a modern, interdisciplinary resource aimed at students and professionals interested in the intersection of psychology (e.g., social, forensic, clinical), criminal justice, sociology, and criminology. The interdisciplinary study of human behavior in legal contexts includes numerous topics on criminal behavior, criminal justice policies and legal process, crime detection and prevention, eyewitness identification, prison life, offender assessment and rehabilitation, risk assessment and management, offender mental health, community reintegration, and juvenile offending. The study of these topics has been increasing continually since the late 1800s, with people trained in many legal professions such as policing, social work, law, academia, mental health, and corrections. This will be a comprehensive work that will provide the most current empirical information on those topics of greatest concern to students who desire to work in these fields. This encyclopedia is a unique reference work that looks at criminal behavior primarily through a scientific lens. With over 500 entries the book brings together top empirically driven researchers and clinicians across multiple fields—psychology, criminology, social work, and sociology—to explore the field.
