Book Synopsis Preventing Corruption in Asia by : Ting Gong
Download or read book Preventing Corruption in Asia written by Ting Gong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite intensified governmental and public efforts at corruption control in recent years, official transgression continues to surface in various ways of abusing the unique power and trust that a government holds. Preventing Corruption in Asia addresses a number of crucial questions: -What institutional arrangements are necessary to ensure a clean and honest government? - What self-regulatory capabilities must government institutions develop in order to maintain integrity? -How should a sense of ethical responsibility be instilled in the civil services? -Do special anti-corruption agencies help keep government clean? -How will a regulatory framework of official conduct work properly? -How useful are anti-corruption campaigns in containing corruption? Focusing on a number of carefully selected countries in the Asia and Pacific region, the book sets as its focal point the choice of institutional design in preventing corruption, rather than treating corruption as a practical or technical problem to be corrected by strong political will and good anti-corruption policy measures. While focusing on institutional designs and policy choices, the book also examines other aspects of clean government such as the social environment, legal and regulatory framework, role of the public, and the impact of culture.
Book Synopsis The Political Logics of Anticorruption Efforts in Asia by : Cheng Chen
Download or read book The Political Logics of Anticorruption Efforts in Asia written by Cheng Chen and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Northeast and Southeast Asia—regions notable for political diversity, difficult environments for fighting corruption, and multifarious anticorruption outcomes—this book examines the political dynamics behind anticorruption efforts there. The contributors present case studies of the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, and China that explore the varying roles anticorruption efforts play in solidifying or disputing democratic and nondemocratic institutions and legitimacy, as well as the broader political and economic contexts that gave rise to these efforts. Whether motivated by private interests, party loyalty, or political institutionalization, political actors shape the trajectories of anticorruption efforts by challenging their opponents over what constitutes corruption, what enables corruption, and how to combat corruption. Arguing that anticorruption strategy may be associated more closely with shifting bases of regime legitimacy than with regime type, the book sheds light on the divergent ways in which states control and respond to political elites and society at large, and on how citizens from across strata understand and engage with their states.

Book Synopsis Governments, NGOs and Anti-Corruption by : Luís de Sousa
Download or read book Governments, NGOs and Anti-Corruption written by Luís de Sousa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to understand the rise, future and implications of two important new kinds of "integrity warriors" - official anti-corruption agencies (ACAs) and anti-corruption NGOs – and to locate them in a wider context and history of anti-corruption activity. Key issues of corruption and anti-corruption are discussed in an integrated and innovative way; through a number of country studies including Taiwan and South Korea, South East Europe, Fiji, Russia and the Baltic States. Some of the questions, used to examine the development of new anti-corruption actors, include: In what context were these born? How do they operate in pursuing their mission and mandate? How successful have they been in relation to expected results? To what extent are governmental and non governmental actors aware of each other and how far do they cooperate towards the common goal of fighting corruption? What explains the shift in emphasis after the end of the cold war, from national to international action? Governments, NGOs and Anti-Corruption will be of interest to students and scholars of corruption, public policy, political science, developmental studies and law. Luís de Sousa is an Associate Researcher at CIES-ISCTE, Portugal and Calouste Gulbenkian Fellow at the European University Institute, Italy. Barry Hindess is Emeritus Professor of Political Science at the Australian National University, Australia. Peter Larmour is a Reader in Public Policy and Governance at the Crawford School of Economics and Government, Australian National University, Australia.

Book Synopsis Corruption by Design by : Melanie Manion
Download or read book Corruption by Design written by Melanie Manion and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contrasts experiences of mainland China and Hong Kong to explore the pressing question of how governments can transform a culture of widespread corruption to one of clean government. Melanie Manion examines Hong Kong as the best example of the possibility of reform. Within a few years it achieved a spectacularly successful conversion to clean government. Mainland China illustrates the difficulty of reform. Despite more than two decades of anticorruption reform, corruption in China continues to spread essentially unabated. The book argues that where corruption is already commonplace, the context in which officials and ordinary citizens make choices to transact corruptly (or not) is crucially different from that in which corrupt practices are uncommon. A central feature of this difference is the role of beliefs about the prevalence of corruption and the reliability of government as an enforcer of rules ostensibly constraining official venality. Anticorruption reform in a setting of widespread corruption is a problem not only of reducing corrupt payoffs, but also of changing broadly shared expectations of venality. The book explores differences in institutional design choices about anticorruption agencies, appropriate incentive structures, and underlying constitutional designs that contribute to the disparate outcomes in Hong Kong and mainland China.

Book Synopsis Politics in Taiwan by : Shelley Rigger
Download or read book Politics in Taiwan written by Shelley Rigger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-05-03 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that Taiwan, unlike other countries, avoided serious economic disruption and social conflict, and arrived at its goal of multi-party competition with little blood shed. Nonetheless, this survey reveals that for those who imagine democracy to be the panacea for every social, economic and political ill, Taiwan's continuing struggles against corruption, isolation and division offer a cautionary lesson. This book is an ideal, one-stop resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students of political science, particuarly those interested in the international politics of China, and the Asia-Pacific.
