Book excerpt: I found that the larval period of A. truei in the Klamath Mountains of northern California ranges from two years in low and mid-elevations, to at least three years in high elevations. I also found decreased body size and increased growth rates of tadpoles with increasing elevation. Post-metamorphic frogs grew at similar rates as previously described coastal California populations. There was high site fidelity and significantly greater movement during the months of June and August in post-metamorphic animals. Frogs in the high elevations are capable of great longevity, with a maximum observed age estimated at eight years post-metamorphosis. The high elevation populations described here have the longest larval period documented in California. This study also provides the first field estimates of larval growth rates and the first longevity estimates of post metamorphic frogs in California. Future laboratory experiments will be necessary to separate phenotypic plasticity of life history traits from true genetic differences between A. truei populations in the Klamath Mountains of northern California, as potential explanations for the variation seen.

Book excerpt: The coastal tailed frog (Ascaphus truei) has a biphasic life-history that includes the use of high-elevation streams and adjacent old growth forests. This species is at risk from a variety of land-use activities that result in younger and more fragmented terrestrial habitats. I investigated the fine-scale spatial ecology of post-metamorphic tailed frog populations as revealed by seasonal variation in activity and movement. I used an Information Theoretic Model Comparison approach to relate tailed frog captures in pitfall traps to sets of explanatory factors and infer habitat use by adult tailed frogs located with VHF radio transmitters. Trap data suggested that variation in the relative abundance and distribution was attributed to time of year, associated with reproductive activity seasonal trends in local climate canopy closure and distance to the larval stream. The most parsimonious logistic regression model for both years of trapping data demonstrated good' predictability (Area Under the Curve (AUC) > 0.7). Data from 24 tailed frogs with radio transmitters (8 males, 16 females) fitted to a resource selection function suggested that tailed frogs were positively associated with habitats containing decayed coarse woody debris (CWD), less light, adjacency to the larval stream, wet site types, and cool temperatures (11-12C). When compared to males, females were more selective in their choice of habitat (AUC > 0.7). Overall, the relationship between distribution and activity of tailed frogs was reflective of reproductive phenology in combination with micro-site or broader climatic conditions. Thus, habitat protections should reflect the behavior and habitat of the species as it varies across spatiotemporal scales.

Book excerpt: Ascaphus truei, an ancient species of frog, migrated into British Columbia, Canada, following the last ice age. A. truei is of conservation interest because forestry practices, and the associated infrastructure, may reduce habitat quality. There is also concern that a warmer and drier climate will change the distribution and abundance of this species. I used two genetic methods, microsatellites and next-generation sequencing, to compare the genetic diversity of A. truei from the northern extent of its range in British Columbia, CA to southern Washington, USA. Both methods suggested a dramatic reduction in diversity across the northern portion of the species' range. The phylogeography suggests a northern range expansion from a single refugium. I used DNA metabarcoding to compare the gut contents of larvae across three stream reaches and two development classes near the northern extent of A. truei's range. Gut contents differed between stream reach but did not differ among development class. Wetted width and ultimately stream volume may influence differences in gut content among stream reaches. I also quantified the relationship between an index of larvae density and environmental factors hypothesized to influence population density near the northern extent of the range. I assessed the segregation of larvae at various developmental stages. Wetted width and wetted depth correlated with differences in the abundance of larvae. Older developmental stages were captured in stream reaches with greater slopes than younger stages. Management should minimize modifications of stream structure, such as in-stream siltation due to road building. We should maintain habitat connectivity and gene flow to ensure the continued migration and adaptive capacity of A. truei.

Book excerpt: Description of anuran larvae with the use of staging tables is a common practice in the study of frog life-histories, but there has been no previous description or table of Ascaphus larvae. In comparing Ascaphus larvae to a simplified staging table for anurans it was found that these larvae vary considerably from those of other anurans. Five stages had to be eliminated (Fertilization, Grey Crescent, Neural Plate, Gill Circulation, and Cornea Transparent) and five new ones created (Deposition, Neural Groove, Eye Pigmentation, Body Pigmentation, and Hatching). The final result was a series of twenty-one stages, from Deposition through Hatching, through which the growth and development of the larvae could be traced and which will, it is hoped, facilitate discussion of larval Ascaphus in any further studies. Determination of tadpole food habits through stomach and intestinal content samples was largely unsuccessful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A huge, beautiful compendium of 600 frogs from around the world, from the famed poison-arrow variety on up to the intriguingly named plaintive rain frog.” —Wired With over 7,000 known species, frogs display a stunning array of forms and behaviors. A single gram of the toxin produced by the skin of the Golden Poison Frog can kill 100,000 people. Male Darwin’s Frogs carry their tadpoles in their vocal sacs for sixty days before coughing them out into the world. The Wood Frogs of North America freeze every winter, reanimating in the spring from the glucose and urea that prevent cell collapse. The Book of Frogs commemorates the diversity and magnificence of all of these creatures, and many more. Six hundred of nature’s most fascinating frog species are displayed, with each entry including a distribution map, sketches of the frogs, species identification, natural history, and conservation status. Life-size color photos show the frogs at their actual size—including the colossal seven-pound Goliath Frog. Accessibly written by expert Tim Halliday and containing the most up-to-date information, The Book of Frogs will captivate both veteran researchers and amateur herpetologists. As frogs increasingly make headlines for their troubling worldwide decline, the importance of these fascinating creatures to their ecosystems remains underappreciated. The Book of Frogs brings readers face to face with six hundred astonishingly unique and irreplaceable species that display a diverse array of adaptations to habitats that are under threat of destruction throughout the world. “If you are a serious (and I mean serious) fan of the frog, you are in for a real treat.” —Boing Boing
