When he and his nemesis, Dean Claymore, report for duty in Miami, Florida they discover that the old taildragger can deliver tons ordnance; however it is unforgiving of inexperienced aviators. Fortunately Miami offers diversions, such as airline stewardesses, jai alai frontons, and all night cocktail lounges. When the squadron deploys to the Far East it deals with bizarre aircraft accidents, a humiliating encounter in a Manila bar, and a wacky operation to rescue US citizens from a civil war on Sumatra. Days before they are to return home, Tom and Dean disappear over the Philippines and are feared to be victims of communist guerillas. Crammed with nonstop aviation adventure, this saga will not let you go until the final page has been turned.

Book excerpt: Flying a Tailwheel Plane In the air all aeroplanes obey the same rules and fly in similar ways to each other, but on the ground tailwheel and nose wheel aeroplanes are quite different. It is not necessary for you to be an ace pilot to fly one of these tailwheel aeroplanes, all that is required is due care and attention: do not exceed your own limitations, or those of the aeroplane, read the manual, stay alert and keep flying the plane at ALL times: a flight is not finished until the aeroplane is either tied down or in the hangar.

Donald Mallick gives the reader fascinating first-hand description of his early naval flight training, carrier operations, and his research flying career with NASA. After transferring to the NASA Flight Research Center, Mallick became involved with projects that further pushed the boundaries of aerospace technology. These included the giant delta-winged XB-70 supersonic airplane, the wingless M2-F1 lifting body vehicle, and triple-sonic YF-12 Blackbird. Mallick also test flew the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle and helped develop techniques used in training astronauts to land on the Moon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting oral history/biography of a pioneering woman aviator. This is the story of an uncommon woman--high school cheerleader, campus queen, airplane pilot, wife, mother, politician, business-woman--who epitomizes the struggles and freedoms of women in 20th-century America, as they first began to believe they could live full lives and demanded to do so. World War II offered women the opportunity to contribute to the work of the country, and Nancy Batson Crews was one woman who made the most of her privileged beginnings and youthful talents and opportunities. In love with flying from the time she first saw Charles Lindbergh in Birmingham, (October 1927), Crews began her aviation career in 1939 as one of only five young women chosen for Civilian Pilot Training at the University of Alabama. Later, Crews became the 20th woman of 28 to qualify as an "Original" Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS) pilot, employed during World War II shuttling P-38, P-47, and P-51 high-performance aircrafts from factory to staging areas and to and from maintenance and training sites. Before the war was over, 1,102 American women would qualify to fly Army airplanes. Many of these female pilots were forced out of aviation after the war as males returning from combat theater assignments took over their roles. But Crews continued to fly, from gliders to turbojets to J-3 Cubs, in a postwar career that began in California and then resumed in Alabama. The author was a freelance journalist looking to write about the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) when she met an elderly, but still vital, Nancy Batson Crews. The former aviatrix held a reunion of the surviving nine WAFS for an interview with them and Crews, recording hours of her own testimony and remembrance before Crews's death from cancer in 2001. After helping lead the fight in the '70s for WASP to win veteran status, it was fitting that Nancy Batson Crews was buried with full military honors.

Book excerpt: Designed for the pilot of piston-engine aircraft who is preparing for turbine ground school, the transitioning military pilot studying for that first corporate or airline interview, or even the old pro brushing up on turbine aircraft operations, this manual covers all the basics, clearly explaining the differences between turbine aircraft and their piston-engine counterparts. It addresses high-speed aerodynamics, coordinating multipilot crews, wake turbulence, and navigating in high-altitude weather. The book is like an operations manual for these complex aircraft, detailing pilot operations that include preflight, normal, emergency, IFR, and fueling procedures. Readers will be introduced to flight dispatch; state-of-the-art cockpit instrumentation, including the flight management system (FMS) and the head-up guidance system (HGS or HUD); and the operating principles of hazard avoidance systems, including weather radar, lightning detectors, and the ground proximity warning system (GPWS). Updated to reflect the newest Federal Aviation Administration regulations and procedures, this new edition also includes a glossary of airline and corporate aviation terminology, handy turbine pilot rules of thumb, and a comprehensive turbine aircraft "Spotter's Guide."
