It has been prepared by Mr. D. W. Coquillett, of the office force, and consists of a revision of the species of the parasitic ies belonging to the family Tachinidaa, which occur in the United States and Canada. The desirability of such a revision of these economically important ies has been apparent to all workers in economic as well as systematic entomology for many years. They are among the most important enemies of many of our most injurious insects, and their characters are so obscure that workers have had the greatest difficulty in separating one species from another, and the result is that the literature of economic entomology in par ticular contains many wrong determinations and absolute misstate ments based upon such erroneous names. During the last eighteen years many species of Tachinidze have been reared at this office from injurious insects which were being studied. It has been heretofore impossible to record the results of these rearings, on account of the confusion which existed in this family, and in its original conception this study of the group was undertaken in order to enable us to record the results of this biologic work. The records are now given in the shape of two tables - one of parasites and hosts and the other of hosts and parasites - and a glance at these tables will be instantly couvin cing as to the important and beneficial role which these insects play. With the clear and systematic diagnoses of the genera and species which. Mr. Coquillett has prepared, any economic entomologist should be able to determine just what species of Tachina ies are assisting him in his work against injurious insects. This group of tachinid Diptera totals 58 species in Europe of which 6 are here described as new to science. In most species, the immatures live as endoparasitolds of lepidopterous larvae, but a few species even attack tipulid larvae. Several species of Siphonini are of great economic interest as agents for the control of lepidopterous and tipulid pests in agriculture and forestry. An analysis and proposal on the systematic position of the Siphonini is given together with a key to larger taxonomic entities of Tachinidae. The generic classification is also critically emphasized. A separate chapter summarizes aspects of the group's natural history: life-cycles, mating behaviour, oviposition strategies, etc. The taxonomic part contains identification keys to genera and species, and for each species a diagnosis, a description and accounts on the nomenclature, biology and distribution is given. Book excerpt: 1.The large Diptera family Tachinidae is a diverse and recent group of koinobiont endoparasitoids feeding on a wide range of insects and some other arthropods. 2.Unfortunately, taxonomic confusion and poor understanding of tropical faunas has made difficulties for both basic and derived ecological research on tachinid flies.3.Here I present evolutionary and ecological hypotheses for tachinid flies, with focus on the large tribe Blondeliini. Chapter 2 summarizes evidence for a latitudinal gradient in tachinid fly species richness within the Americas, using 7 survey data sets within both the temperate zone and tropics. In Chapter 3, I use several nuclear genes to construct a phylogenic framework for the tribe Blondeliini. Despite overall low support values, it was possible to infer several genus groups as well as describe overall evolutionary trends in host use and biogeography in the tribe. Chapter 4 is a conspectus of the Blondelia group of genera, which are distinctive for the female 2keel and piercer3 oviposition device. Both genetic and morphological evidence were used to delimit the included genera and species groups of Eucelatoria. Chapter 5 is a revision of the Eucelatoria ferox species group, the females of which are distinctive for their elongate piercers. Total ecological, morphological, and genetic evidence were used to describe previously named species as well as 17 species new to science.
