Book excerpt: This paper reviews the statistical distribution of ocean wave forces based on formulas of earlier investigations. Tables present the probability density and distribution function of wave forces, particularly for use with piles. The tables obviate lengthy computations and are useful in engineering design. Five methods for the estimation of C sub D and C sub M are given. Wave forces measured near Davenport, California illustrate the use of the tables and methods. A method of moments is easiest to apply but the least squares methods give more consistent results. (Author).

Book Synopsis Advances in Hydroscience by : Ven Te Chow
Download or read book Advances in Hydroscience written by Ven Te Chow and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Hydroscience, Volume 8, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in hydroscience. The book contains six chapters and opens with a study on seiches—a phenomenon that frequently occurs in large enclosed bodies of water and that can result in serious destruction of shore structures and bring sudden death to innocent swimmers. This phenomenon bears certain resemblances to the tsunamis and storm surges over the open sea. Subsequent chapters deal with the basic principles underlying the techniques in isotope hydrology; statistical models for ocean waves and wave forces; fluvial sediment transport; impulsive waves; and channel networks. This contribution will prove particularly useful to hydrologists, since most work in this field has been done by physicists or other non-hydrologists.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Analysis of Ocean Structures by : Bruce Muga
Download or read book Dynamic Analysis of Ocean Structures written by Bruce Muga and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvements in the design process as applied to ocean structures have received intense interest in recent years. Part of this interest stems from the growing realization that design on a purely deterministic basis is inadequate for structures sub ject to random loads, which are best described by statistical (or probability) methods. This book is an attempt to bridge the gap between present design practices and available analytical techni ques (which may be exploited to improve present procedures). The book itself is an outgrowth of a set of notes prepared for an intensive short course presented over the past three years by the Engineering Extension Division of the University of California at Los Angeles, California. The ensuing presentation is composed of four parts. The material begins with a review of the physical environment (winds, surface gravity water waves and currents) for which engineering type formulations are presented. Hindcasting and forecasting techniques using spectral concepts are included. Special problem areas are enumerated.
