Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From CHAPTER I. Modulation, in general. 1. To modulate, in the strict sense, is, in general, to pass by means of appropriate harmonies from one key to another. For the sake of terseness we will call the key just left the Old Key, the other one the New Key. By "appropriate harmonies" we mean in general such chords as form, in connection with a short harmonic formula called Cadence (see Chapter IX), a bond of union between the old Key and the new. The harmonies used in this work are exclusively major and minor Triads, as being the easiest chords to manage. 2. We may touch upon the domains of a foreign key without intending to leave the original key, - this would not be to modulate, in the strict sense. If, however, we not only pass over into the domains of a foreign key, but settle down in the key by means of its characteristic harmonies embodied in a Cadence, this plainly indicates the relinquishment of the original key, or, in other words, Digressive Modulation. Our means of modulation is, then, the Cadence, in conjunction with certain preceding Triads connecting it with the old key. 3. In our method we reach the new key in every case by means of one and the same simple Cadence-formula, which varies only according as it is to be used for the Major or the Minor Mode. The manner of proceeding is perfectly simple. The determination of the new key to which we are going, of course, also determines the Cadence as being in that key, and our task is to leave the old key by such of its harmonies as can be - as shortly as possible - properly connected (either immediately or mediately) with the Cadence itself. A homely illustration may serve to make this clear. We may imagine a railway-train, carrying with it an arrangement in the form of a movable switch, which can be laid down and stretched out as may be required, to enable the train to leave the main track and connect with auxiliary roads, each leading to a particular station, more or less remote. The Cadence may be likened to one of these auxiliary roads; for, as soon as we have safely made the connection (from the old key to the initial Triad of the Cadence) by means of the movable switch (the intermediate Triads, few or many), we leave the main track (the old key), and our task is as good as done, - the auxiliary road (the Cadence) will unerringly conduct us to the desired new station (the new key).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Modulate: A Simple and Systematic Guide in Modulating From Any Key to Any Other, and a Review of the Principles of Artistic Modulation as Applied in General Composition The student of Theory who is not content with a merely superficial view of the subject, will find that several of the principles here developed particularly the Attendant chords and the treatment of the Chords of the Augmented Sixth have a most important bearing not only upon Modulation but upon Musical Theory in general. In our standard works on Theory we have fine examples of Modulation, but there are few principles advanced and these do not apply in every case. Therefore it has been concluded that the Art of Modulation is a matter of experience and taste, and that the subject though it may be learned can not be taught. This little work shows that it may be reduced to a system and thoroughly mastered in a short time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This dissertation presents computational methods for examining the temporality of music at multiple time-scales so that both short-term surface features and deeper long-term structures can be studied and related to each other. The methods are applied in particular to musical key analysis (Chapters 2-4) and also adapted for use in performance analysis (Chapters 5-6). The essential methodology is to examine all sequential time-scales within a piece using some analytic process and then arrange a summary of the analytic results into a maximally overlapped arrangement. Chapter 2 defines a two-dimensional plotting domain for displaying musical features at all possible time-scales which forms a basis for further analysis methods. The resulting structures in the plots can be examined subjectively as a navigational aid in the music as illustrated in Chapters 3 and 5. They can also be used to extract musically relevant information as discussed in Chapters 4 and 6.

Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

Book excerpt: The Nashville Number System was originally written and published in 1988 by Chas. He has rigorously updated and edited the book for each of 7 subsequent editions. Featured here is the 2005 printing and 7th edition of The Nashville Number System; expanded with the inclusion of the cd/cd rom, String Of Pearls. By word of mouth, it has become the most recommended source for learning the Number System. The Nashville Number System is used as a text at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, Belmont University, in Nashville, and MTSU in Murfreesboro,TN. SYNOPSISIn the late 50's, Neil Matthews devised a musical number system for the Jordanaires to use in the studio. Charlie McCoy and fellow studio musicians began adapting Matthews' number system into chord charts. The Nashville Number System has evolved into a complete method of writing chord charts and melodies---combining Nashville shorthand with formal notation standards. The Nashville Number System is 130 pages with a step by step method of how to write a Nashville number chart for any song. Included with each NNS book in Edition 7 is the cd, "String Of Pearls". This is a 10 song cd of instrumentals, including, Amazing Grace. I walk you through the details of each song and explain the Number System tools used to write the charts. Now, while listening to the cd, you can see and hear how Nashville number charts work.String Of Pearls is an Extended CD (CD ROM). As well as high quality audio that will play in your cd player, you can insert the disc into your computer and watch animated number charts as you listen to the songs. On the cd rom, there is a click track with each song and a highlight moving from chord to chord in time with the music. You can see exactly how to count each measure in real time with the music. Counting bars is probably the hardest part of the number system to teach. With this cd rom, you will be able to see, hear and feel how these charts work.

Book excerpt: Children are inherently musical. They respond to music and learn through music. Music expresses children's identity and heritage, teaches them to belong to a culture, and develops their cognitive well-being and inner self worth. As professional instructors, childcare workers, or students looking forward to a career working with children, we should continuously search for ways to tap into children's natural reservoir of enthusiasm for singing, moving and experimenting with instruments. But how, you might ask? What music is appropriate for the children I'm working with? How can music help inspire a well-rounded child? How do I reach and teach children musically? Most importantly perhaps, how can I incorporate music into a curriculum that marginalizes the arts? This book explores a holistic, artistic, and integrated approach to understanding the developmental connections between music and children. This book guides professionals to work through music, harnessing the processes that underlie music learning, and outlining developmentally appropriate methods to understand the role of music in children's lives through play, games, creativity, and movement. Additionally, the book explores ways of applying music-making to benefit the whole child, i.e., socially, emotionally, physically, cognitively, and linguistically.

Book excerpt: An important look at bandwidth-efficient modulations with applications to today's Space program Based on research and results obtained at the California Institute of Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, this timely book defines, describes, and then delineates the performance (power and bandwidth) of digital communication systems that incorporate a wide variety of bandwidth-efficient modulations appropriate for the design and implementation of space communications systems. The author compares the performance of these systems in the presence of a number of practical (non-ideal) transmitter and receiver characteristics such as modulator and phase imbalance, imperfect carrier synchronization, and transmitter nonlinearity. Although the material focuses on the deep space applications developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the presentation is sufficiently broad as to be applicable to a host of other applications dealing with RF communications. An important contribution to the scientific literature, Bandwidth-Efficient Digital Modulation with Application to Deep Space Communications * was commissioned by the JPL Deep Space Communications and Navigation System Center of Excellence * highlights many NASA-funded technical contributions pertaining to deep space communications systems * is a part of the prestigious Deep Space Communications and Navigation Series The Deep Space Communications and Navigation Series is authored by scientists and engineers with extensive experience in astronautics, communications, and related fields. It lays the foundation for innovation in the areas of deep space navigation and communications by disseminating state-of-the-art knowledge in key technologies.
