Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meat-eating dinosaurs, or Theropoda, include some of the fiercest predators that ever lived. Some of the group's members survive to this day—as birds. The theropod/bird connection has been explored in several recent works, but this book presents 17 papers on a variety of other topics. It is organized into three parts. Part I explores morphological details that are important for understanding theropod systematics. Part II focuses on specific regions of theropod anatomy and biomechanics. Part III examines various lines of evidence that reveal something about theropods as living creatures. Book excerpt: From antiquity to the Middle Ages, the bear's centrality in cults and mythologies left traces in European languages, literatures, and legends. Book Synopsis Art and Politics of the Second Empire by : Patricia Mainardi
Download or read book Art and Politics of the Second Empire written by Patricia Mainardi and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Patricia Mainardi presents a new analysis of the major shift in nineteenth-century art from large public to small private works by examining the political and institutional factors that were in effect. Mainardi brings to life the complex institutional world of official art in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, presenting the relevant individual personalities, group interests, conflicts, and shift in a policy with clarity and detail. Writing in a lively, often witty style, she throws much new light on such subjects as the decline of history painting, the rise and eventual triumph of genre painting, the influence exerted in France by the art of England, Belgium, and Germany, and the inevitable collapse of the official exhibition system.
Book Synopsis The Native Mind and the Cultural Construction of Nature by : Scott Atran
Download or read book The Native Mind and the Cultural Construction of Nature written by Scott Atran and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2010-01-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of the cognitive consequences of diminished contact with nature examines the relationship between how people think about the natural world and how they act on it, and how these are affected by cultural differences. Surveys show that our growing concern over protecting the environment is accompanied by a diminishing sense of human contact with nature. Many people have little commonsense knowledge about nature—are unable, for example, to identify local plants and trees or describe how these plants and animals interact. Researchers report dwindling knowledge of nature even in smaller, nonindustrialized societies. In The Native Mind and the Cultural Construction of Nature, Scott Atran and Douglas Medin trace the cognitive consequences of this loss of knowledge. Drawing on nearly two decades of cross-cultural and developmental research, they examine the relationship between how people think about the natural world and how they act on it and how these are affected by cultural differences. These studies, which involve a series of targeted comparisons among cultural groups living in the same environment and engaged in the same activities, reveal critical universal aspects of mind as well as equally critical cultural differences. Atran and Medin find that, despite a base of universal processes, the cultural differences in understandings of nature are associated with significant differences in environmental decision making as well as intergroup conflict and stereotyping stemming from these differences. The book includes two intensive case studies, one focusing on agro-forestry among Maya Indians and Spanish speakers in Mexico and Guatemala and the other on resource conflict between Native-American and European-American fishermen in Wisconsin. The Native Mind and the Cultural Construction of Nature offers new perspectives on general theories of human categorization, reasoning, decision making, and cognitive development.

Book Synopsis Science and Technology in the Industrial Revolution by : Albert Edward Musson
Download or read book Science and Technology in the Industrial Revolution written by Albert Edward Musson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1989 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrating on the Industrial Revolution as experienced in Great Britain (and, within that sphere, mainly on the early development of the engineering and chemical industries), the authors develop the thesis that the interaction between theorists and men of practical affairs was much closer, more complex and more consequential than some historians of science have held it to be. Deeply researched, gracefully argued and fully documented. First published in 1969, and established now as a "classic" in the field, the present edition has a new foreword by Margaret C. Jacob. Book Synopsis The Birth of the Orchestra by : John Spitzer
Download or read book The Birth of the Orchestra written by John Spitzer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-29 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the emergence of the orchestra from 16th-century string bands to the 'classical' orchestra of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and their contemporaries. Ensembles of bowed stringed instruments, several players per part plus continuo and wind instruments, were organized in France in the mid-17th century and then in Rome at the end of the century. The prestige of these ensembles and of the music and performing styles of their leaders, Jean-Baptiste Lully and ArcangeloCorelli, caused them to be imitated elsewhere, until by the late 18th century, the orchestra had become a pan-European phenomenon.Spitzer and Zaslaw review previous accounts of these developments, then proceed to a thoroughgoing documentation and discussion of orchestral organization, instrumentation, and social roles in France, Italy, Germany, England, and the American colonies. They also examine the emergence of orchestra musicians, idiomatic music for orchestras, orchestral performance practices, and the awareness of the orchestra as a central institution in European life.

Book Synopsis Technological Change by : Robert Fox
Download or read book Technological Change written by Robert Fox and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technological Change gathers together examples of the best current thinking on methodology and the theoretical perspectives that are increasingly of concern to historians of technology, whilst at the same time presenting other papers which reflect the 'state of the art' in key areas of historical debate. The volume emphasises the need both to establish a common forum for theoretical and empirical research and also to delineate the shared concerns of these two treatments, which are too often reflected as conflicting rather than mutually supportive approaches to the writing of the history of technology.
