The pastiches are in the manner of Balzac, Flaubert, Sainte-Beuve, Henri de Régnier, Michelet, Émile Faguet, Renan and the Goncourt brothers. The second part, Mélanges, consists of four sections: the destruction of cathedrals in the First World War, the separation of church and state, a drama about madness, and Proust's love of reading. Proust is best known for writing À la recherche du temps perdu (variously translated as Remembrance of Things Past and In Search of Lost Time), widely considered to be the greatest novel of the twentieth century. Book Synopsis The Lemoine Affair by : Marcel Proust
Download or read book The Lemoine Affair written by Marcel Proust and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Their friend Marcel Proust had killed himself after the fall in diamond shares, a collapse that annihilated a part of his fortune. This is the first-ever translation into English of this startling tour-de-force by one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers. The Lemoine Affair was inspired by the real-life French scandal involving Henri Lemoine, who claimed he could manufacture diamonds from coal and convinced numerous people—including officers of the De Beers diamond mine company and Proust himself—to invest in the scheme. In a series of pastiches—imitations written in the style of other writers—Proust tells the story of the embarrassment rippling across high society Paris in the wake of the scandal, poking fun at himself (in one story, a character declares that Marcel Proust is so embarrassed he’s suicidal) while lampooning some of France’s greatest writers, including Flaubert, Balzac, and Saint-Simon. Full of sophisticated wit and dazzling wordplay, and rife with allusions to his friend and fictional characters, many Proust scholars see the dead-on mimicry of The Lemoine Affair—written soon after Proust’s rejection of society life—as the work by which he honed his own unique, masterly voice. The Art of The Novella Series Too short to be a novel, too long to be a short story, the novella is generally unrecognized by academics and publishers. Nonetheless, it is a form beloved and practiced by literature's greatest writers. In the Art Of The Novella series, Melville House celebrates this renegade art form and its practitioners with titles that are, in many instances, presented in book form for the first time.

Book excerpt: Although the Nijmegen artists Herman, Paul and Jean de Limbourg were barely thirty years old when they suddenly died in 1416, they already had a formidable career behind them. Now, almost six hundred years after their creation, the colourful and highly refined miniatures in the "Belles Heures" and "Tr s Riches Heures du Duc de Berry" still speak vividly to our imagination. In 2005 Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen presented the exhibition The Limbourg Brothers. Nijmegen Masters at the French Court (1400-1416) . This was the first time that original miniatures from four manuscripts by the Limbourg brothers were shown in the Netherlands. The exhibition formed an excellent opportunity to invite prominent scholars to share their views on the art of the Limbourg brothers during a two-day conference. This publication presents in written form the conference papers delivered by some of the leading scholars in the field. In that respect, the volume acts as an addendum to the catalogue. Contributors are Hanneke van Asperen, Gregory T. Clark, Herman Th. Colenbrander, Rob D ckers, Eberhard K nig, Margaret Lawson, Stephen Perkinson, Pieter Roelofs and Victor M. Schmidt.

Book excerpt: Blaise Pascal, the precociously brilliant contemporary of Descartes, was a gifted mathematician and physicist, but it is his unfinished apologia for the Christian religion upon which his reputation now rests. The Penseés is a collection of philosohical fragments, notes and essays in which Pascal explores the contradictions of human nature in pscyhological, social, metaphysical and - above all - theological terms. Mankind emerges from Pascal's analysis as a wretched and desolate creature within an impersonal universe, but who can be transformed through faith in God's grace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hand-painted illumination enlivened the burgeoning culture of the book in the Italian Renaissance, spanning the momentous shift from manuscript production to print. J. J. G. Alexander describes key illuminated manuscripts and printed books from the period and explores the social and material worlds in which they were produced. Renaissance humanism encouraged wealthy members of the laity to join the clergy as readers and book collectors. Illuminators responded to patrons' developing interest in classical motifs, and celebrated artists such as Mantegna and Perugino occasionally worked as illuminators. Italian illuminated books found patronage across Europe, their dispersion hastened by the French invasion of Italy at the end of the 15th century.--

Book Synopsis Miracles in Miniature by : Pierpont Morgan Library
Download or read book Miracles in Miniature written by Pierpont Morgan Library and published by . This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Master of Claude de France was an illuminator active in the French city of Tours during the first two decades of the sixteenth century. He is named after two jewel-like manuscripts he painted for Queen Claude de France (1499-1524), first wife of King François I: a tiny Book of Hours (today owned by Heribert Tenschert) and an even tinier Prayer Book (today owned by the Morgan Library & Museum). Although we find traces of him possibly as early as 1498, he does not emerge as an independent artist until around 1508. He flourished in the second decade of the century -- when he illuminated the majority of his work, including the two codices for the queen -- and disappeared shortly after 1520. All told, his actual career lasted only a short dozen years. In that brief span, however, he created some of the most mesmerizing illuminations in France during the “last flowering” of the handwritten and hand-painted book. Published on the occasion of the Morgan Library & Museum’s exhibition ‘Miracles in Miniature: The Art of the Master of Claude de France’, this is the first major study on the artist’s oeuvre since Charles Sterling’s 1975 book that gave the illuminator his name. The study offers a survey of the painter’s roots and training, his career, and his denouement. Francisco Trujillo’s study of the palettes of the Claude Master and of the two artists who trained or influenced him, Jean Bourdichon and Jean Poyer, offers fascinating scientific parallels to Roger Wieck’s stylistic analysis. Including, in a final chapter, all the known works by the Claude Master and his followers, ‘Miracles in Miniature’ will be the starting point for all future studies of the artist. 0Exhibition: The Morgan Library and Museum, NYC, USA (30.5.-14.9.2014).
