Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the design, and progress toward the construction, of systems required for the study of the propagation of 10.6 micrometers radiation from CO2 lasers (both high power pulsed and cw) through clouds, both laboratory generated and natural. The laboratory experiments of highest priority are the study of non-linear attenuation of high power TEA laser pulses (of order 10 J/sq. cm.) through optically thick clouds produced by adiabatic expansion with particular attention to change of pulse shape, and measurements of backscatter. The systems required for these experiments are nearing completion. The field experiments are the study of attenuation, beam quality and backscatter of TEA laser pulses and cw radiation over a return path of the order of 1 km. The systems required are under construction. All lasers and also the transmissometer have been developed within the group. (Author).

Book Synopsis High-Power Laser Radiation in Atmospheric Aerosols by : V.E. Zuev
Download or read book High-Power Laser Radiation in Atmospheric Aerosols written by V.E. Zuev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique properties of laser radiation including its monochromatic properties, polarization, high spectral intensity, coherence, narrow beam divergence, the possibility of controlling the pulse duration and radiation spectrum and, finally, the fact that extremely high power and energy create very favorable conditions for the extensive application of lasers to communi cation systems, systems for the lidar sensing and ultra-high-precision ranging, navigation, remote monitoring of the environment, and many other systems operating in the atmosphere. The operative efficiency of the above systems depends significantly on the state of the atmosphere and the corresponding behavior of laser radia tion propagating through it. This circumstance has stimulated the studies of the above regularities during the passt 10-15 years. For the investiga tions to be carried out the scientists were forced to develop new theories and methods for studying the problem experimentally. Moreover, during such investigations some previously unknown phenomena were observed, among them the nonlinear effects accompanying high-power laser radiation propagating through the atmosphere are of paramount importance. Among the nonlinear effects caused by high-power laser radiation inter action with the atmosphere, the effects accompanying the propagation of high-power radiation through the atmospheric aerosols are of particular interest. Aerosols always occur in the atmosphere. It should be noted that the microphysical and optical characteristics of atmospheric aerosols vary widely, this fact causes a great variety in the features of their inter action with radiation.
Book Synopsis Propagation of High Energy Pulses of 10.6 Micrometer Radiation Through the Atmosphere by : P. F. Browne
Download or read book Propagation of High Energy Pulses of 10.6 Micrometer Radiation Through the Atmosphere written by P. F. Browne and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains a detailed theoretical discussion of the effect of CO2 laser (10.6 micrometer wavelength) energy on fog droplets, and the subsequent effects on the optical propagation path of the laser beam. Changes in refraction index in the beam cross section are considered. Plans for construction of a fog generation chamber for water fogs of controlled characteristics suitable for CO2 laser experimentation are given. Work on the development of CO2 TEA2 laser and triggering systems and progress on a 50 W CW diffusion cooled CO2 laser is discussed. Planned experiments, using the laser under development, for study of the interaction of such beams with laboratory controlled fogs are described. (Author).
Book Synopsis Atmospheric Transmittance, 7-30 Micrometers by : R. A. McClatchey
Download or read book Atmospheric Transmittance, 7-30 Micrometers written by R. A. McClatchey and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High resolution transmittance curves are presented for the spectral region 320-1400 wave numbers. These spectra are useful as a guide for selecting laser wavelengths for atmospheric propagation studies in this spectral region. In addition, this report provides specific information concerning the attenuation coefficients of 41 CO2 rotational laser lines in the 10.4 micrometer band system (v3 to v1). Charts for predicting the atmospheric attenuation of the CO2 laser lines are provided for each of five climatological model atmospheres and two haze models. The current report extends the work presented in two earlier reports on (1) CO laser attenuation in the 1400-2120/cm−1 (4.72-7. 14 micrometers) region: AFCRL-71-0370 and (2) HF and DF laser attenuation in the 2120-3740/cm (2.67-4.72 micrometers) region: AFCRL-72-0312. This report, when combined with the two previous reports described above, provides synthetic spectra for the entire region from 2.67-31.25 micrometers.

Book Synopsis CO2 Lasers Effects and Applications by : W Duley
Download or read book CO2 Lasers Effects and Applications written by W Duley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CO2 Lasers: Effects and Applications examines and summarizes the important applications of the device in different areas of study like physics, chemistry, and engineering. In some parts of the book, the reader is assumed to be knowledgeable in university level mathematics or some specialized area in physics or chemistry. The book consists of 10 chapters where the first two establish the general concepts on lasers and CO2 lasers, respectively. Chapter 3 takes the reader further and presents a comprehensive review of optical components for use such as detectors, windows, and mirrors. Because the CO2 laser is mostly used as a heat source, the theory of laser-surface heating is relevant in the discussion. This theory is presented in Chapter 4. Chapters 5 and 6 meanwhile present a summary of observations on cutting, welding, and some related topics. The following chapters discuss the different applications of CO2 lasers in different areas and processes. Some of these applications include in the generation of thermal effect, laser deposition of thin films, spectroscopy, laser photochemistry, and meteorology and communication systems. The text is a good source of reference to both students and scientists in the areas of physics, chemistry, and engineering.

This book was released on 1972 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes the work performed during the second year of an experimental and theoretical research program concerning the self-induced thermal distortion effects on cw CO2 laser radiation propagating in absorbing media. The research program is directed toward improving the understanding of the possible limitations imposed by the atmosphere on the propagation of high power laser radiation. The work presented is concerned with essentially the following three different areas: (1) wind simulation experiments using a high pressure gas cell; (2) studies of the kinetic cooling of a gas by absorbing of CO2 laser radiation; and (3) studies of turbulence effects on the self-induced thermal distortion of laser beams.
