Book excerpt: Le domaine étudié dans cette thèse concerne la navigation autonome des robots mobiles dans un environnement d'intérieur supposé bidimensionnel et statique. Une méthode d'évitement des obstacles, permettant l'adaptation des mouvements du robot à la géométrie locale de l'environnement, a été développée. L’accent a été mis sur la nécessité d'un niveau dédié au contrôle d'exécution assurant l'interface entre un planificateur global et un système d'exécution d'une part et les stratégies locales d'évitement des obstacles d'autre part. Le système réactif est basé sur le concept des contraintes cinématiques et la définition des contraintes géométriques. L’originalité de la méthode réside dans la séparation de la tache de génération de consigne qui asservit le robot à des trajectoires de référence, de celle d'évitement des obstacles. Cette séparation permet au robot d'exécuter le mieux possible les différentes étapes du plan et de s'adapter à la géométrie locale de l'environnement. La détection des cas d'échecs de navigation locale est prise en compte explicitement dans les algorithmes du système réactif. Le recouvrement de ces échecs est effectué par un module rattaché au niveau de contrôle d'exécution. La méthode proposée est basée sur une recherche aveugle dans un arbre construit au cours de la mission. En ce qui concerne le niveau de contrôle d'exécution, l'étude réalisée est constituée principalement d'une spécification fonctionnelle qui pourrait servir de cadre de développements futurs. La dernière partie de la thèse présente les résultats de notre étude testée et validée par simulation.

On définit l'évitement d'obstacles comme un filtre des actions nominales générées par un module de contrôle visant à satisfaire une mission planifiée. La définition de la mission et sa réussite sont ainsi spécifiées indépendamment des comportements locaux de sauvegarde du robot mobile. Ce travail s'intègre dans une architecture globale de planification et de contrôle d'exécution des taches de déplacements du robot mobile. Il a été conçu a l'origine pour être installe sur tout véhicule monocorps équipé de capteurs télémétriques et a été testé en vrai sur un robuter. L'originalité du travail effectue consiste d'abord en l'utilisation de la méthode des contraintes a des fins de navigation et non dans le contexte de planification de chemins dans lequel elle a vu le jour. Cette utilisation correspond à définir, a tout moment, des contraintes de rapprochement entre les proximètres et les portions d'obstacles détectés. Ceci a deux avantages manifestes. D'une part, l'expression de la contrainte est plus explicite que la définition d'un potentiel de répulsion a partir des obstacles détectés. D'autre part, les contraintes de rapprochement ajoutées aux contraintes inhérentes au véhicule (limitations de vitesse, de courbure, et d'accélération), engendrent un ensemble de commandes possibles plutôt qu'une seule commande dans le cas de la méthode de potentiel. Cette liberté de choix permet d'utiliser plusieurs stratégies de sélection d'une commande particulière dans le domaine admissible. Toute méthode locale étant sujette a des blocages, la présence de plusieurs stratégies de mouvement, permet en cas de blocage consécutif a l'application d'une stratégie, d'en utiliser une autre. On développe deux classes de stratégies: les stratégies de projection et de contournement. Pour la stratégie de contournement, on utilise une technique d'exploitation des espaces libres, similaire a celle de Koren et Borenstein. Par ailleurs, on compare la méthode proposée avec celles basées sur des techniques de potentiel artificiel présentées par Holenstein et Baddredin et par Koren et Borenstein a partir de leur évaluation en simulation. Ces approches récemment publiées constituent des représentants typiques d'algorithmes d'évitement reflexe d'obstacles. Enfin, on a construit des logiciels permettant de simuler des missions et de visualiser l'exécution d'un module installe sur un robuter.
