It aims to formalize both aspects of the subject and presents both qualitative and quantitative system dynamics. The former is centred on diagrammatic modelling as a means of describing and analyzing complex systems and the latter is based on converting these diagrams into formal simulation techniques, and are presented using both DYSMAP2 and STELLA simulation languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dilemma named in Hugh G. Petrie's title was stated by Meno in Plato's dialogue of that name: "A man cannot enquire about that which he knows or about that which he does not know; for if he knows, he has no need to enquire; and if not, he cannot; for he does not know the very subject about which he is to enquire." Petrie argues that Meno's dilemma poses the fundamental epistemological question for education, "How is learning possible?" He examines a variety of familiar approaches to learning, from the open classroom to back-to-basics, and finds that each of these approaches attempts to grasp one horn of the dilemma to the exclusion of the other. The examination of previous attempts to resolve the dilemma of enquiry and learning prepares the way for Petrie's proposed solution. He defines learning as an adaptation of thought and action to the demands of the natural and social world. This process has two major components, assimilation and accommodation, corresponding to the two traditional ways of attacking the dilemma. Assimilation is explained using the insights of [control] systems theory, while results in evolutionary epistemology are brought to bear on the question of accommodation. Petrie shows that only a reflective equilibrium between assimilation and accommodation will allow for a resolution of the Meno dilemma. In the course of his presentation the author challenges a number of educational dogmas, including the beliefs that clear and unambiguous goals can be stated for learning; that theory can be "applied" to practice; that "subjective" tests are inferior to "objective" tests; and that the intelligence of a child makes a difference to educational policy. The book outlines new approaches to commonplace educational phenomena such as testing and to radical phenomena such as conversion experiences. It makes novel practical suggestions for the use of activity, perceptual training, and metaphor in a variety of learning situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decision support systems (DSS) have evolved over the past four decades from theoretical concepts into real world computerized applications. DSS architecture contains three key components: knowledge base, computerized model, and user interface. DSS simulate cognitive decision-making functions of humans based on artificial intelligence methodologies (including expert systems, data mining, machine learning, connectionism, logistical reasoning, etc.) in order to perform decision support functions. The applications of DSS cover many domains, ranging from aviation monitoring, transportation safety, clinical diagnosis, weather forecast, business management to internet search strategy. By combining knowledge bases with inference rules, DSS are able to provide suggestions to end users to improve decisions and outcomes. This book is written as a textbook so that it can be used in formal courses examining decision support systems. It may be used by both undergraduate and graduate students from diverse computer-related fields. It will also be of value to established professionals as a text for self-study or for reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we approach the end of the 20th century we can look back upon the achievements that have been made in a variety of human endeavours with pride. Enormous strides have been made to improve the quality of life of millions of people through the application of the scientific discoveries made during this and past centuries. The 20th century will be remembered as much for the mass exploitation of scientific discovery as for the discoveries themselves. The technological age has meant that the human being is able to contemplate activities which "defy" nature. For example, some of the work involved in the preparation of these proceedings has been done whilst travelling at over 500 miles per hour seven miles above the surface of the earth. It is not difficult to conjecture about the effect that this relatively recent technology has had upon a number of "systems". Air transportation has provided a number of benefits including such disparate examples such as enabling holidays, famine relief and the cross fertilisation of cultural practices from other lands. Equally, there have been undesirable effects such as enabling the means of mass destruction, interference in other cultures and the speedy transportation of disease. Moreover, the physical presence of the aeroplane itself represents the consumption of fossil fuels, a source of pollution and a change in the way think about life. The view expressed here is of course the view of an inhabitant of the "western world".

Book excerpt: This volume brings together papers that offer methodologies, conceptual analyses, highlight issues, propose solutions, and discuss practices regarding privacy and data protection. It is one of the results of the eight annual International Conference on Computers, Privacy, and Data Protection, CPDP 2015, held in Brussels in January 2015. The book explores core concepts, rights and values in (upcoming) data protection regulation and their (in)adequacy in view of developments such as Big and Open Data, including the right to be forgotten, metadata, and anonymity. It discusses privacy promoting methods and tools such as a formal systems modeling methodology, privacy by design in various forms (robotics, anonymous payment), the opportunities and burdens of privacy self management, the differentiating role privacy can play in innovation. The book also discusses EU policies with respect to Big and Open Data and provides advice to policy makers regarding these topics. Also attention is being paid to regulation and its effects, for instance in case of the so-called ‘EU-cookie law’ and groundbreaking cases, such as Europe v. Facebook. This interdisciplinary book was written during what may turn out to be the final stages of the process of the fundamental revision of the current EU data protection law by the Data Protection Package proposed by the European Commission. It discusses open issues and daring and prospective approaches. It will serve as an insightful resource for readers with an interest in privacy and data protection.
