Book excerpt: The phosphinoamide chemistry has attracted a considerable attention owing to the structural diversity of the associated complexes. To further understand the properties of the P-N bond, Ashby synthesized the compound [(Ph2P-NPh)Li(Et2O)] through the deprotonation reaction of the corresponding aminophosphine with nBuLi. X-ray diffraction analyses indicated the presence of Li-P bonds (2.684 and 3.004 Å). In addition, the P-N bond length (1.672(2) Å) was relatively smaller than that of a single bond (mean value of 1.70).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent applications of main group organometallic compounds in the materials sciences has dramatically increased the interest in developing new and more selective synthetic routes to main group organometallic compounds. The first synthesis and structural characterization of a new class of metalloid-heterocycle, stibaindoles, has been accomplished by the application of a transmetallation strategy from zirconium. The facile formation, and ready isolation, of these new compounds bodes well for the role early transition metal complexes may play in the discovery of new and valuable classes of main group compounds. Keywords: Main group metallacycles, Solid state inorganic, Metal polymers, Sulfur, Stibaindoles, Organometallic compounds, Zirconium, Materials science. (jg).

Book excerpt: With an enormous velocity, olefin polymerization has expanded to one of the most significant fields in polymers since the first industrial use about 50 years ago. In 2005, 100 million tons of polyolefins were produced - the biggest part was catalyzed by metallorganic compounds. The Hamburg Macromolecular Symposium 2005 with the title "Olefin Polymerization" involved topics such as new catalysts and cocatalysts, kinetics, mechanism and polymer reaction engineering, synthesis of special polymers, and characterization of polyolefins. The conference combined scientists from different disciplines to discuss latest research results of polymers and to offer each other the possibility of cooperation. This is reflected in this volume, which contains invited lectures and selected posters presented at the symposium.

Chapters are ordered to reaction type, contain educational elements and deal with concepts illustrated by examples that cover the main developments. After a short introduction on polar organometallic chemistry and synthesis of early main group metal complexes, a variety of catalytic reactions are described, e.g. polymerization of alkenes, hydroamination and phosphination reactions, hydrosilylation, hydroboration and hydrogenation catalysis, as well as enantioselective and Lewis-acid catalysis. The book addresses organic chemists and researchers in industry interested in the state-of-the-art and new possibilities of early main group metal catalysis as well as newcomers to the field. Written by a team of leaders in the field, it is a very welcome addition to the area of main group metal chemistry, and to the field of catalysis.
