Book excerpt: Nanomaterials based on cerium (IV) oxide, or CeO2, have been investigated due to interesting chemistry from the readily accessible Ce3+/Ce4+ transition. This transition is accompanied by a gain or loss in CeO2 oxygen and/or electrons. As a result, CeO2 has demonstrated reversible antioxidant activity and enzyme mimetic activity, and has also been used in oxygen transport, photocatalysis, and small molecule oxidation applications. Doping CeO2 with lower valent ions creates oxygen vacancies and increases the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio within the lattice. The dopant may also contribute properties such as fluorescence or magnetism to compliment the CeO2 chemistry. This work presents the synthesis of several europium doped-CeO2 (Eu-CeO2) morphologies, the investigation into parameters controlling their size, morphology, and elemental composition. Select applications highlighting differences in the materials synthesized were also investigated. Eu-CeO2 nanorods and nanocubes were synthesized using a hydrothermal procedure. The nanorods were also annealed to enhance their Eu3+ fluorescence. An electrospinning and annealing procedure was used to synthesize nanowires. The Eu:Ce ratio for all the rods, cubes, and wires were controlled by changing the Eu3+ precursor concentration. Manipulation of the precursor concentrations provided minor dimension control of the rods, while changing of Ce3+ precursor and hydrothermal reaction time influenced the nanocube morphology. Finally, Eu-CeO2 nanotubes have been synthesized by layered deposition of Ce(OH)3 on a sacrificial ZnO nanowire array. The hydroxide was oxidized to Eu-CeO2 and the ZnO core etched to produce the nanotube morphology. The nanotube dimensions were controlled by the ZnO core, but low yield demands further optimization prior to use in the intended drug delivery applications. One synthesized, the rods, cubes, and wires were analyzed for Eu3+-contributed fluorescence. While the cubes and wires fluoresced as synthesized, the nanorods required annealing above 500 °C to fluoresce. Nanocubes were also synthesized with neodymium and ytterbium instead of europium. These cubes fluoresce at 800-1000nm, which is useful in bioimaging applications. The four materials (rods, annealed rods, cubes, and wires) were also compared for their effect on the transformation of di-hydroxyphenylalanine (L-Dopa) to eumelanin. Previous CeO2 nanoparticles have captured catechol-containing molecules by oxidation and conjugation with the -OH groups. Our Eu-CeO2 materials suppressed eumelanin-associated fluorescence by up to 60% when added to L-Dopa early in its transformation to eumelanin. The four morphologies exhibited very different activities, with higher Ce3+ concentrations and smaller crystalline domains associated with enhanced suppression of eumelanin synthesis.

Book excerpt: A challenging task, in the area of magnetic resonance imaging is to develop contrast enhancers with built-in antioxidant properties. Oxidative stress is considered to be involved in the onset and progression of several serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and the possibility to use cerium-contained nanoparticles to modulate such inflammatory response has gained a lot of interest lately. The rare earth element gadolinium is, due to its seven unpaired f-electrons and high symmetry of the electronic state, a powerful element for contrast enhancement in magnetic resonance imaging. Chelates based on gadolinium are the most commonly used contrast agents worldwide. When introducing external contrast agents there is always a risk that it may trigger inflammatory responses, why there is an urgent need for new, tailor-made contrast agents. Small sized cerium oxide nanoparticles have electronic structures that allows coexistence of oxidation states 3+ and 4+ of cerium, which correlates to applicable redox reactions in biomedicine. Such cerium oxide nanoparticles have recently shown to exhibit antioxidant properties both in vitro and in vivo, via the mechanisms involving enzyme mimicking activity. This PhD project is a comprehensive investigation of cerium oxide nanoparticles as scaffold materials for gadolinium integration. Gadolinium is well adopted into the crystal structure of cerium oxide, enabling the combination of diagnostic and therapeutic properties into a single nanoparticle. The main focus of this thesis project is to design cerium oxide nanoparticles with gadolinium integration. A stepwise approach was employed as follows: 1) synthesis with controlled integration of gadolinium, 2) material characterization by means of composition crystal structure, size, and size distribution and 3) surface modification for stabilization. The obtained nanoparticles exhibit remarkable antioxidant capability in vitro and in vivo. They deliver strongly enhanced contrast per gadolinium in magnetic resonance imaging, compared to commercially available contrast agents. A soft shell of dextran is introduced to encapsulate the cerium oxide nanoparticles with integrated gadolinium, which protects and stabilizes the hard core and to increases their biocompatibility. The dextran-coating is clearly shown to reduce formation of a protein corona and it improves the dispersibility of the nanoparticles in cell media. Functionalization strategies are currently being studied to endow these nanoparticles with specific tags for targeting purposes. This will enable guidance of the nanoparticles to a specific tissue, for high local magnetic resonance contrast complemented with properties for on-site reduced inflammation. In conclusion, our cerium oxide nanoparticles with integrated gadolinium, exhibit combined therapeutic and diagnostic, i.e. theragnostic capabilities. This type of nanomaterial is highly promising for applications in the field of biomedical imaging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nano-oxide materials lend themselves to applications in a wide variety of emerging technological fields such as microelectronics, catalysts, ceramics, coatings, and energy storage. However, developing new routes for making nano-based materials is a challenging area for solid-state materials chemists. This book does just that by describing a novel method for preparing them. The authors have developed a novel low-temperature, self-propagating synthetic route to nano-oxides by the solution combustion and combustible precursor processes. This method provides the desired composition, structure, and properties for many types of technologically useful nanocrystalline oxide materials like alumina, ceria, iron oxides, titania, yttria, and zirconia, among others. The book is particularly instructive in bringing readers one step closer to the exploration of nanomaterials. Students of nanoscience can acquaint themselves with the actual production and evaluation of nanopowders by this route, while academic researchers and industrial scientists will find answers to a host of questions on nano-oxides. The book also provides an impetus for scientists in industrial research to evaluate and explore new ways to scale up the production of nanomaterials, offering helpful suggestions for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cerium oxide (Ceria) at nano scale has gained significant attention due to its numerous technological applications. Ceria in both doped and undoped forms are being explored as oxygen sensor, catalysis, protective coating against UV and corrosion, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrolyte and newly discovered antioxidant for biomedical applications. Therefore, there is an imminent need of a technology which can provide a cost effective, large scale manufacturing of nanoceria and its subsequent consolidation, specially using thermal spray. This dissertation aims to develop a scientific understanding towards the development of pure and doped ceria- based coating for a variety of technological applications, from SOFC applications to corrosion resistant coating. Atmospheric plasma spray (APS) and solution precursor plasma spray (SPPS) techniques for the fabrication of nano ceria coating were investigated. For feedstock powder preparation, a spray drying technique was used for the agglomeration of cerium oxide nano particles to achieve high density coating. Deposition efficiencies and coating porosity as a function of processing parameters were analyzed and optimized using a statistical design of experiment model. The coating deposition efficiency was dependent on the plasma temperature and vaporization pressure of the ceria nanoparticles. However, low standoff distance and high carrier gas flow rate were responsible for the improved density upto 86±3%. An alternative novel SPPS technique was studied for a thin film of cerium oxide deposition from various cerium salt precursors in doped and undoped conditions. The SPPS process allows controlling the chemistry of coating at a molecular level. The deposition mechanism by single scan experiments and the effect of various factors on coating microstructure evolution were studied in terms of splats formation. It was found that the precursor salt (nitrate of cerium) with lower thermal decomposition temperatures was suitable for a high density coating. The high concentration and low spray distance significantly improve the splat morphology and reduced porosity (upto 20%). The feasibility of the trivalent cations (Sm3 and Gd3) doping into cerium oxide lattice in high temperature plasma was discussed and experimentally studied. XRD analysis revealed the nano crystalline characteristic of the coating and lattice expansion due to doping. The extensive transmission electron microscopy, Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermo gravimetric were conducted to evaluate the precursors, and coating microstructure. Due to facial switching between Ce4+ and Ce3+ oxidation state, the cerium oxide surface becomes catalytically active. Thus, the APS ceria coatings were investigated for their applicability under extreme environmental conditions (high pressure and temperature). The air plasma sprayed coated 17-4PH steel was subjected to high pressure (10 Kpsi) and temperature (300 °F) corrosive environment. The coated steel showed continuous improvement in the corrosion resistance at 3.5 wt% NaCl at ambient temperature for three months study whereas, high pressure did not reveal a significant role in the corrosion process, and however, one needs to do further research. The ceria coated steel also revealed the improvement in corrosion protection (by 4 times) compared to the bare steel at low pH, 300 °F and 4000 Psi environment. This study projects the importance of cerium oxide coatings, their fabrication, optimization and applications.

Book excerpt: Rare earth oxides with trivalent lattice dopants have been of great interest to researchers in the recent years due to its potential applications in catalysis and high temperature protective coatings. The ability to store oxygen in rare earths is the basis for catalysis because of the ability to change valence states which causes the presence of intrinsic oxygen vacancies in the crystal lattice. Although, several doped-rare earth oxide systems in micron scale have been investigated, the doping effect in cerium oxide nanoparticles with well characterized particle size has not been studied. The doping of ceria at that small size can be very beneficial to further improve its catalytic properties and alter the high temperature phases in alloy systems. Cost effective room temperature chemical methods are used in the current work to synthesize uniformly distributed undoped and doped (dopants: La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Y and Yb) rare earth oxide nanoparticles. In the present study, the variation of the properties in nanocrystalline ceria (NC) synthesized by microemulsion method is studied as a function of dopant size and its concentration. To further understand, the role of dopant (cation) size on the oxygen vacancy concentration, doped nanocrystalline oxide powders were analyzed by Raman Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). XRD studies showed that lattice parameter change in nanocrystalline oxide by doping trivalent rare earth elements is largely depending on size of trivalent ions. It showed that by doping larger cations (Gd3+ and Y3+) compare to Ce3+ causes lattice expansion where as smaller cations (Yb3+) leads to lattice contraction. It also showed that the lattice expansion or contraction is directly proportional to dopant concentration.

Book excerpt: Rare earth based nanoparticles have luminescent and paramagnetic properties which have potential use for applications in medical imaging, display technologies and lasers. Some Ln 3+ ions luminesce in the visible range, for example Eu3+ emits in the red and Tb3+ in the green. Ln3+ optical emission is very narrow and is not affected by the local environment. This property has found use in emissive displays. Most Ln3+ ions are paramagnetic, again a property which is expected to remain in most Ln3+-based compounds. Gd3+ in particular has found use as an MRI contrast agent as it has a high magnetic moment. -- In this work attempts were made to synthesise europium, terbium and dysprosium phosphide (REP) nanoparticles. An organometallic-based precursor route with coordinating solvents using tris(dimethylamino) phosphine as the phosphorous source was chosen as the synthetic route. Results indicated that the target nanoparticles were synthesised when using rare earth chloride as the metal precursors and TOPO as the coordinating ligand and solvent. The products from these reactions were most likely a mixture of products containing rare earth phosphide and phosphate nanoparticles and large particles and rare earth-TOPO complexes. The experiments reported for the phosphide syntheses are unique as there are no other reports of rare earth phosphide nanoparticles. TDMAP has also rarely been used as a phosphorous source for the synthesis of phosphide nanoparticles. -- Europium, terbium and gadolinium fluorides (REF3) were synthesised using several methods including routes using trifluoroacetate-based precursors. One finding was that the europium fluoride nanoparticles in particular displayed very long-range self-assembly. Europium-doped gadolinium fluoride nanoparticles were rendered water-soluble by PEGylation.

Book excerpt: Single crystalline cerium oxide nanoparticles were synthesized with hydrothermal method by mixing cerium nitrate[Ce(NO3)3.6H2O] aqueous solution with alkali bases CsOH and RbOH. SEM, TEM and XRD characterization methods were used in order to identify morphology. First part of the study includes the work on effect of hydrothermal parameters, such as reaction temperature, reaction time, alkali base type and concentration on particle size and morphology. It was prooved that the size of ceria nanoparticles is directly proportional with the reaction time. The reaction temperature is also an important parameter that effect the morphology of nanoparticles. At 120 oC nanoparticles form rod like structure and as time goes they start to form cubic crystals. When the alkali base and concentration was changed the results showed that higher base concentration favors the particles to form bigger structures than that of lower concentrations. In addition, optical properties of CeO2 nanoparticles were studied by using the UV-Vis and Fluorescence Spectrometry. UV-Vis Spectroscopy results show that particle size of CeO2 nanoparticles synthesized in the presence of 8M RbOH are larger than that of synthesized in presence of 8M CsOH. When the reaction time decreases the Ce3+ defect increases based on the results of Fluorescence Spectrometry results. Second part of the study includes catalytic property of CeO2 nanoparticles. Ceria nanoparticles were used as catalyst in the synthesis of flavone from 2'-hydroxychalcone. Several reaction parameters were studied in order to achieve the flavone synthesis. TLC, GC, GC-MS and NMR were used in order to monitor the results of the reactios.

Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is related to synthesis and investigation of different rare-earth doped nanomaterials that are prepared via microwave-assisted synthesis in ionic liquids (ILs). The main research has been focused on shifting the excitation wavelength from the UV-region to the visible light in order to establish efficient LED phosphors. The combination of microwave heating and ionic liquids as reaction media showed superior benefits for the rapid synthesis of different nanomaterials over the conventional heating methods, especially in terms of reaction time, high crystallinity, low defects, and thus high quantum yields.
