Book excerpt: Every electrochemical source of electric current is composed of two electrodes with an electrolyte in between. Since storage capacity depends predominantly on the composition and design of the electrodes, most research and development efforts have been focused on them. Considerably less attention has been paid to the electrolyte, a battery’s basic component. This book fills this gap and shines more light on the role of electrolytes in modern batteries. Today, limitations in lithium-ion batteries result from non-optimal properties of commercial electrolytes as well as scientific and engineering challenges related to novel electrolytes for improved lithium-ion as well as future post-lithium batteries.

This book was released on 2008-04-26 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first development of lithium-ion batteries in the early 1990’s, there have been tremendous advances in the science and technology of these electrochemical energy sources. At present, lithium batteries dominate the field of advanced power sources and have almost entirely replaced their bulkier and less energetic counterparts such as nickel-cadmium and nickel-metalhydride batteries; especially in portable electronic devices. But lithium batteries are still the object of continuing intense research aimed at making further improvements in performance and safety, at lower cost, so as to make them suitable for higher-power and more demanding applications such as electric vehicles. The research and development of new electrode materials, particularly for cathodes, having an improved electrochemical performance has always been a matter of changing focus. Thus, olivine, lithium iron phosphate, has attracted considerable attention in recent years as a safe, environmentally friendly, extremely stable and very promising cathode material.

This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive coverage of Lithium (Li) metal anodes for rechargeable batteries. Li is an ideal anode material for rechargeable batteries due to its extremely high theoretical specific capacity (3860 mAh g-1), low density (0.59 g cm-3), and the lowest negative electrochemical potential (−3.040 V vs. standard hydrogenelectrodes). Unfortunately, uncontrollable dendritic Li growth and limited Coulombic efficiency during Li deposition/stripping inherent in these batteries have prevented their practical applications over the past 40 years. With the emergence of post Liion batteries, safe and efficient operation of Li metal anodes has become an enabling technology which may determine the fate of several promising candidates for the next generation energy storage systems, including rechargeable Li-air batteries, Li-S batteries, and Li metal batteries which utilize intercalation compounds as cathodes. In this work, various factors that affect the morphology and Coulombic efficiency of Li anodes are analyzed. The authors also present the technologies utilized to characterize the morphology of Li deposition and the results obtained by modeling of Li dendrite growth. Finally, recent developments, especially the new approaches that enable safe and efficient operation of Li metal anodes at high current densities are reviewed. The urgent need and perspectives in this field are also discussed. The fundamental understanding and approaches presented in this work will be critical for the applicationof Li metal anodes. The general principles and approaches can also be used in other metal electrodes and general electrochemical deposition of metal films.

This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lithium (Li) deposition is a problem in Li batteries (LB) – both Li metal (LMB) and Li-ion (LIB) batteries – which limits their performance in terms of power and energy density. Two trends can be identified in the advancement of LBs concerning the problem of Li deposition: optimization of the existing system (the state-of-the-art LIBs) and further development of cell components such as electrolytes. This work addresses both approaches. In the first part, this study investigates Li deposition in LMB and LIBs. A novel method to study the Li-based transport mechanisms in LIBs is introduced. Later the kinetic deviations between anode and cathode as a consequence of aging and the relation of these deviations to the occurrence of Li-plating are discussed. In the second part, the applicability of PEO-based solid polymer electrolytes for LMBs to overcome the Li plating issue is investigated. The introduction of various interfacial interlayers at the cathode/electrolyte interphase was studied to improve the electrochemical stability of the cells. Cells with an in-situ electro-deposited interlayer showed the best cyclability.
